Showtime Orders Ray Donovan and Masters of Sex to Series

showtime liev schreiber ray donovanShowtime has officially picked up its next two dramas in Ray Donovan and Masters of Sex. Both have been given initial 12-episode orders and will debut sometime in 2013, though the general time frame for either premiere has yet to be confirmed.

Created by Southland’s Ann Biderman, Ray Donovan brings Liev Schreiber to television for his first series regular role as the title character, a professional fixer in Los Angeles who is often called on by the who’s who of the city. From the description, it sounds like what House of Lies would have been had it become a drama rather than a comedy, but the strong supporting cast (Jon Voight, Elliot Gould, Eddie Marsan, Dash Mihok, and Paula Malcomson, among others) and Schreiber’s considerable skill should differentiate it pretty quickly.

Starring Emmy winner Michael Sheen and Lizzy Caplan, Masters of Sex tells the story of sexuality researchers William Masters and Virginia Johnson, pioneers in the field of sexual disorders and dysfunctions that came to prominence in the 1960s. The duo gained infamy rather quickly, culminating in appearances on Time Magazine and Johnny Carson, and Masters of Sex will cover the commotion they caused in the general public and the entertainment world. The show, based on the book “Masters of Sex: The Life and Times of William Masters and Virginia Johnson, The Couple Who Taught America How To Loveand created by The Pacific’s Michelle Ashford, features the likes of Caitlin Fitzgerald, Nicholas D’Agosto, Teddy Sears, Beau Bridges, and Margo Martindale.

Showtime currently has four dramas on the air in Homeland, Dexter, The Borgias, and Shameless, but I’d expect at least one of Ray Donovan or Masters of Sex to air during the summer of 2013. The first two air in the fall, the third in the spring, and the fourth in the winter, so there’s a summer opening waiting to be filled by one if not both new dramas.

What current Showtime shows do you think Ray Donovan and Masters of Sex would be most compatible with? Which of the two are you most looking forward to?
