During just its first season, Skins managed to stir up perhaps the most controversy of any show on cable in a long time. Airing on MTV, the American adaptation of the hit British series came under fire from the Parents Television Council for what they called "child pornography." Even then, MTV kept the show on the air. No longer, it seems.
“Skins is a global television phenomenon that, unfortunately, didn’t connect with a US audience as much as we had hoped,” MTV announced on Thursday. “We admire the work that the series’ creator Bryan Elsley did in adapting the show for MTV, and appreciate the core audience that embraced it.”
The cancellation, despite the show's good viewership, was probably a result of advertisers fleeing from the show in the wake of the PTC's allegations of child porn. That's right, folks; even though Skins clearly wasn't child porn, the PTC was able to scare advertisers away -- effectively cancelling the show. Skins would likely have done better on a pay cable network like Showtime, which doesn't rely on advertisers.
The original UK version of Skins wrapped up its fifth season in March, and will likely return for a sixth season in January on E4.
wow what a waste. if the excecution was better, MTV 'Skins' had soooo much potential to be just like the UK one but oh well
I agree. I can forgive them for stealing entire lines of dialogue and story lines but at least hire halfway decent actors to do the job.
just as well, the american version was rubbish. i don't understand why mtv couldn't just air the british version. they used to back in the days of the young ones. maybe it would have done better here had they not tried to turn it into something else.
