This past year's eighth season of Smallville was rumored to be the last for quite some time, and fans were ecstatic, but a little shocked when news came that The CW was close to signing the series, and its star Tom Welling for a nineth season, which will begin on Friday September 25. But it may come as an even bigger surprise that the rumor mill is starting to spread word that Smallville might once again shock us, and get extended for a tenth season.
SciFiWire is reporting that Justin Hartley, who plays Oliver Queen/Green Arrow, has said that reports of the ninth season being the last may be premature.
"Look, they're so busy right now, they don't know if they're doing one more season or eight more seasons or two more seasons," Hartley said last week at the Saturn Awards in Burbank, Calif. "They have no idea. So we'll see. I've spoken to them a couple weeks ago and had kind of a vague conversation with them about concept and stuff."
There are no reports whether Tom Welling would be willing to return for a tenth season, or if the ratings will remain strong enough for The CW to keep the show on the air. Smallville is being moved to a new Friday night timeslot, a place that has been known as a timeslot of death for many genre shows. It also begs to question what a tenth season would be about, though there's no doubt the writers would come up with something. For season nine they have already cast Callum Blue as General Zod. But at the same time Clark Kent has pretty much left Smallville behind and entered the world of Metropolis. I mean, how many seasons can he go on being the Red-Blue Blur? Pretty soon, doesn't he need to just become Superman already?
UPDATED: The above rumor of a tenth season is not new and was mentioned several months ago as well. The article mistakenly questions whether Tom Welling would consider returning for a tenth season, when in fact it has been all but confirmed that he has signed on through a tenth season, should the show continue on for that long. However, his contract into a tenth season is not a confirmation that the show will definitely carry on that long. More details about Tom Welling's contract can be found here.

I would love for Smallville to have a season 10, but I would watch Tom Welling in anything. He's great! I do think it's time for Clark Kent to become Superman though. Fly already baby!!!
Tom Welling has to be in it. i guarantee people will watch it but they might get bored without Tom in it, but i think u guys can come up with great ideas to captivate the thrill even though Tom might not be there to hold our suspense. he has to be incorporated somehow though, even if there is just like a peek to see how he is doing in metropolis
Do a little research, Tom Welling is contracted for two more seasons.
Which means nothing. He is optioned for two more seasons, at best. It's up to CW to exercise the option. Look at what happened to Kirk Acevedo with Fringe. He was 'contracted' for season two of Fringe as well, but they didn't pick up his option…
yes, but the article here says there's no reports of Welling's willingness to do a season 10. This is a legal indication of that willingness.
