Smallville will be starting it's tenth and final season on September 24, and though it leaves a long and fantastic legacy, it also leaves a gaping hole for the CW to fill. If now appears that the CW is starting it's search for Smallville's replacement.
Dawn Ostroff, CW's entertainment president, revealed at the Televisions Critic's Association press tour that a replacement for Smallville is in development.
"We have started to talk about if there are other DC comic book adaptations," she told reporters. "We haven't picked anything else up to develop yet, [but] we would like to see something on the air, so we're going to work on it."
The comment seems pretty vague, and probably should have been something the network started to explore a season or two before the end of Smallville. Ostroff also confirmed that a spinoff from Smallville is a possibility as well.
"We are talking about everything," she said. "The characters are there. We're looking at the DC library. There are different parts of the puzzle. At the end of the day, I would love to be able to say that Smallville is going off the air and now we have something else is coming on."
It's certainly been no secret that Smallville's star Tom Welling will finally be donning THE Superman costume this season, though when, and exactly how is anyone's guess. "Yeah, that's the plan," Welling told The Flickcast, when asked if he would become Superman this season. "I don't know how they're going to do it, but I know that inevitably, that's where we get to."
Welling also commented on the never ending rumors about whether he will take the role of Superman from the small screen to the big screen, saying that such a move is complicated.
"It's not as simple as me wanting to do it or not wanting to do it," he explained. "I know that a lot of people want to jump on me or jump on Warner Brothers. It's just not that simple. So there's a lot of elements that have to come together."
The move, however, would certainly bring a decent fan base into the theaters, but would it also alienate the Superman fandom that has been reluctant to accept the idea? Looks like we'll be waiting a while longer to see if Welling makes the move, just what the Smallville version of the Superman costume is going to look like, and what DC comic adaptation might follow Smallville on the CW. So many questions...not many answers.

Welling IS Superman!
I say do a Smallville Superman movie. As far as I'm concerned, everyone else had their chance already (and failed). Smallville is 'too different' and changed things up? I say, So What? Why not? I mean, seriously, HOW many different ways can you keep telling the SAME story, over and over again? People who criticize Smallville say, "He's not clumsy. He doesn't wear glasses. Lex and Clark can't be friends. He HAS to be with Lois. Lois CAN'T know his secret." etc. etc. I think Smallville changing things up like that was the best thing to happen to the franchise since Superman I & II. You can't keep telling it the exact same way, over and over again.
The Superman suit Smallville is using is the same one used in the Superman Returns movie. I don't know if they'll use the same cape though, since fans didn't like the purple tinged one without the emblem on back. The suit is the same one though.
I think the elements coming together are money. To the tune of US$12-15 000 000.00+ % of gross. If they get that element right then I imagine Tom will do the film and if they have a good script, director and cast and promote the s***t out of it this one might make money. how bout Nolans Bro to direct? or Verbinsky or Raimi. or if you wanna keep the budget tight hire Stallone, Rodriquez or Eastwood?
Hahahaha!! An Eastwood adaptation of Superman would be outrageous. Superman meets Dirty Harry meets,”Get off my planet!”
Tom Welling is Superman. Period.
All I can say is that if CW puts him in the costume I hope it doesn't end up being like the final Star Wars movie where I went to the movie expecting to see Darth Vader only to have it be just a very short and dissappointing scene at the end of the movie. They should get him into the costume in episode 2 or 3 and then just let him be Superman for 20 or more episodes.
Yeah, Tom Welling seems to know what he's talking about and when comes to the character, he does have the most experience in being familiar with the character and he has become a very respectable actor and he's proven time after time, season after season and it would do justice that he should be given the shot for the role on the big screen and Warner Brothers and the future producer and director for the rebooted Superman film needs to realized that.
For the last ten years. after watching Smallville for such a long time, he's earned my respects.
He deserves it and he has earned it.
So, Welling is not doing the movie now? Is he to fat?
saw him in cheaper by the dozen, saw him in the fog, saw him on t.v. talk show. he is only superman. he was born to play superman. kyle onstott and lance horner created a gladiator that morphed into the superman character. and they would have come back from the dead to see tom in the superman movie. I have read superman since d c comics #1 and waited all these years for the real superman, and then came tom. bless his heart. he has no place to go but up, up, and away…..!
