The pilot of Smash may not have revealed who won the coveted role of Marilyn Monroe, but episode 2 (airing on February 13), is supposed to reveal whether Karen or Ivy snags the top spot.
As it stands, both girls killed it during their two initial auditions. But in order to properly select a Marilyn, Derek feels that they need "more information", as he said in the trailer for next week. What kind of information? Well, first, they need to make sure both girls can sing and dance. We know Ivy is skilled in both areas, but will Karen be able to live up to Derek's expectations? He puts her to the test, having her perform an original song written by the Smash composers called "The 20th Century Fox Mambo". If you've ever seen the play/movie Evita, it's similar to the song that Eva sings about being made over to look and play the part. In other words, the powers that be behind the 20th Century Fox studio are making over Marilyn to be a star.
Katharine McPhee shines as Karen and turns in a terrific performance, which you can view in its entirety below. Will she or Ivy be chosen as Marilyn? Hopefully we'll have the answer by the end of the next episode.
