‘Stargate Universe’ casts Robert Carlyle in Lead

Stargate Universe - Robert CarlyleThe Sci Fi channel’s newest Stargate creation, Stargate Universe, has just announced the casting of award-winning Scottish actor Robert Carlyle. Carlyle is known for his roles in Trainspotting, The Full Monty, and The World Is Not Enough and will play the lead role of Dr. David Rush on the highly anticipated new series.

‘We couldn’t be more excited to set Robert Carlyle for Stargate Universe. He brings a depth, intelligence, and complexity to his roles, which will fit perfectly with the fresh, new reinvention of this franchise, ‘said Mark Stern, Executive Vice President, Original Programming for SCI FI & Co-Head Original Content, Universal Cable Productions.

If this is the first you’re hearing about Stargate Universe, just think Star Trek Voyager, without the pointy ears, and make it cooler and hipper sounding and you’ll have the basic idea. Stargate Universe will follow a group of soldiers, scientists, and civilians who are forced to enter a Stargate when their base comes under attack. The desperate survivors end up on an ancient ship that’s missing in the far reaches of space (that’s the Star Trek Voyager rip-off part). The group must fend for themselves and fight to survive while Dr. Rush (Carlyle) works to unlock the mysteries of the ancient ship and return them home, but evidence of his ulterior motives soon arises (that’s the cooler and hipper sounding part).

Stargate Universe will begin production in Vancouver in February 2009 and premiere, hopefully, during the summer 2009. Additional casting is currently underway.
