Stargate Universe: The Gate Has Been Closed Indefinitely For The Franchise

It's the end of an era for another sci-fi series.

According to GateWorld.net and Airlock Alpha, fans of Stargate Universe and Stargate in general were delivered a double whammy of blows this weekend at the Official Stargate Convention when Stargate producer and franchise overseer Brad Wright announced that the franchise as we know it is officially dead... at the moment.

“It was a great ride and I felt really good about [SGU] and about Stargate in general,” Wright told the stunned crowd in Vancouver.  “When something’s been a part of your life for 15 years, it kind of takes you over.”

What does this announcement exactly entails? Well, the proposed SG-1 movies and Atlantis movies are now canceled as well as a the possibilities of a potential wrap up movie for the recently canceled SGU, which will end its run on SyFy next month.

The cast members of SGU went on Twitter to speak their minds to the fans of the show. David Blue, who portrays whiz kid Eli Wallace on SGU, tweeted to fans "I am incredibly proud of SGU and I'll calmly discuss why with anyone who wants to challenge that in person."

As for the role of Eli and the cancellation of SGU, Blue stated that wished the cast and crew of SGU had a chance to have one last moment with each other on set, and that he "can't imagine" not donning Eli's trademark graphic tees and snark demeanor.

Brian J. Smith, aka Lt. Matthew Scott, shared his co-star's sentiment and thanked the fans through his Twitter account before offering a glimmer of hope for the future of the franchise.

"That's not to say that Stargate could [not] re-emerge later on down the road in some form, but for the foreseeable future, this is it."

Brad Wright also feels that the Stargate brand is far from dead, because "it's a franchise."

"Stargate is not over. Somebody smart from MGM is going to figure it out, and something will happen."

Let's hope so...

Are you guys sad to see this franchise leave so soon? What would you like to see in the future? A reboot ala J.J. Abrams' "Star Trek" or a continuation of the established history/canoncity laid out by SG-1, SGA, and SGU?

A reboot or more SG-1/SGA movies would be awesome. IMy only hope is that MGM gets new writers for the franchise.

  2. oldhousegeek says:

What a shame. It's an embarrassment that one of the most intelligent, well-written, and well-acted science fiction shows ever can't drum up the viewership to make it viable to complete the storyline.

    • TJ says:

      agree 100%

    • SCIFIDRAGON says:

Couldn't agree more. It just improves with every episode. And it's sad that fans were fighting amongst themselves, because now SG1 and Atlantis are just as dead as the rest. Really a disappointment.

      • gillian says:

Atlantis fans cancelled their own movie as well.  Bitter pill to swallow, thats for sure, but its over for them too.  SGU was their last chance, and when they failed to support that, who would have though Atlantis's fate was tied to SGU?  Too sad.  They could have helped, only, they made it worst.  Thank you very much Atlantis fans who couldn't get over the fact that their show too had been cancelled.

        • ieuan says:

I was a massive atlantis fan and i will admit when SGU first started i found it a little slow and was very different to SGA but i stuck with it and im so glad i did because SGU was different but just as good as SGA

  3. TJ says:

when I first heard they were cancelling the show, I was pissed. I am really getting to the point of not wanting to start any new shows because the frakking netwroks keep cancelling anythign that might be slightly intelligent for crap reality shows. Caprica was another example….. SGU was a good, well written show but just too much for the kids to watch….no one really wants story anymore they just want gun fights and aliens….sad world we live in. I hope that they don't give up on the franchise because of some narrowminded people but I think next time write some steaming pile of crap with just non stop gun battles with aliens and no story what so ever and watch the ratings soar…..

    • Jaclyn says:

I agree wholly with what you're saying TJ. I am tired of nonsense reality crap because people are too lazy to actually use their brains and want to see embarassment because it's easier.

SGU was as dark and light as I could have wanted a show to be. I followed SG1 from the beginning, into Atlantis and beyond. This just shows how utterly ridiculously churlish viewers without the willingness to put in the effort to understand and all those 'so-called' SG fans who decided to ignore this show because Atlantis was cancelled. Bite off the nose… shame. Really is a shame.

    • Chris says:

      100% right TJ

but hey everyone we can always watch wrestling. . . . . Sighfy

    • Wolfman jr. says:

I disagree with you. The reason that SGU sucked so badly was that they ruined it by making it a serial type of show. Not Episodic like the previous incarnations. yes they both had story archs but they did use the story arch all the time. And the personas were just crap no one worth giving to licks about. Eli that was a joke on how he got to join the team. It was just poor and sloppy wiritng. I want to see more SG-1/SGA movies maybe a new series just as long as they learn what they screwed up with SGU and avoid that.

    • Jared Lorz says:

Every idiot network suit wants higher ratings.  They join a niche channel like Scifi.  It's successful with shows like Battlestar, SG-1, SG-A, Eureka, etc.. So what do they do?  They cancel everything they can Scifi and replace it with Pro Wrestling.  They even go so far as to start programming massive amounts of Fantasy and chagne the name to "Syfy" implying Science Fiction and Fantasy.  Slowly but surely they start cancelling the expensive Scifi shows that bring in the ratings and they watch the ratings dwindle down to a .8 share which is what SG-U is receiving.  However they fail to mention that their programming has been driving away their core audience and just continue to program away from success into the lowest common denominator.

  4. Ann says:

I'd love to see more Stargate — as long as it is SG-1 and/or Atlantis. I really don't give a flip whether or not I see more SGU. Although they have made some progress towards making the show better as it ends it 2nd year, the progress has been way too slow. And its biggest problem remains: they peopled it with characters who are just flat-out unlikeable. I don't really care what happens to them and frankly some of them I often wish were gone or killed off. I also think the franchise as a whole needs someone new at the helm. Brad Wright used to be a great writer but since he became the sole showrunner of Stargate he has systematically set out to destroy every single thing that tied the original series to the original movie as well as killing off characters and races of his own so-called franchise left and right. If the fans liked something, it was basically the death knell for whatever character or aspect of the show they most enjoyed. They need someone in charge who understands how important the characters are and who also understands what inspired fans to love the original series and Atlantis.

    • Shelly says:

And this is why we have no more Stargate. As a hugh fan of all things Stargate I was willing to give anything the creators put out a more than fair chance. SGU took a bit longer to grow on me than SG-1 and SGA, but I was always of the mind that any Stargate was better than none. Because of all the critism and so called Stargate fans that did not support SGU and continuously whined instead of seeing the positives of the show……..we now have nothing.

  5. Wade says:

What Stargate Universe never understood is that SciFi works when it holds up the best in humanity and provides hope.  Characters can have flaws, and you can have unlikeable characters, but there has to be a belief that the main theme of the show is the basic goodness of humanity.  Universe, Caprica, and Gallactica in the end lost track of this, devolving into an existential debate on ewhat it means to be human.  You can do this for a while, but to make it the bread and butter of the show is not good scifi.  In the end you are left with little reason to hope for rescue, or even care what happens to the crew of Destiny.  A shame.

  6. Terra_Nova says:

The showrunners only have themselves to blame. Mallozzi and company drove a whole franchise into the ground with their stubbornness and utter contempt for fans.

    • SCIFIDRAGON says:

Do you really think they hate the fans? I'm not saying they didn't make some reeeally stupid decisions, but they want people to like their shows, and as we can see here a lot of people do.

  7. Flash Back says:

I'm quite happy to see Stargate Unwatchable dead and buried. I gave up on it in Season 1 when all they were doing was fighting with each other while searching for yet another planet which might have toilet paper. Unlike its two progenitors, it had no team, no point and no mythos. It was just a bunch of actors mouthing emotional drivel just like Defying Gravity. As stated above, it showed '… utter contempt for (SG1, SGA) fans.'

    • Chris says:

Exactly it's called stranded the whole show was a survivor show of course there's fighting on board this wasn't a hand picked team they were thrown together some military some civi and are just now starting to understand each other and of course not knowing what may happen tomorrow would never cause emotional "drivel" do any of you SiFi "fans" think before u write

I do agree it started slow but sadly these last shows are the best

      • Amethyst says:

Well what did u expect? SG1 was 10 seasons. build up a great rapport and spun off into SGA. SGU was and always will be the biggest mistake of the franchise. they should have kept SGA going with its story (minus san francsico) and it could have kept going for 10 more years. i don't know what is needed to keep a good show going but when you see one fail so badly maybe you should re-think your strategy and go back to the basics that made it work so well.

and it was promised an SGA movie. the movie is written and there are fans out there trying to raise the money to make it ourselves. will anyone pick it up?

  8. oscar1974 says:

i cant beleive they cancelling sgu…. the best syfy show in years…  … its a sad day for syfy fans like me…

  9. Unknown says:

This is dumb!!!! SGU IS GETTING SO MUCH BETTER EACH DAY!! and the STARGATE SAGA IS ONE OF THE GREATEST SAGAS IN THE WORLD:)

  10. adem says:

all of you " so called " fans show be ashamed of your stupid thoughts. being happy sgu is gone and over? look at what all of your negitive comments and narrow minded thoughts have got u…nothing. now there is nothing left to see, nothing left to love. everything is gone because u ppl want rubber masks and make up. you  losty sight of the real reason behind stargate in the first place…the mythology. the stories. new writers? really? u ppl chose WWE over SG. SYFY has lost touch with what made it fomous in the first place as well…SCIENCE FICTION. if any of you trully stuck behind the show, they'd be re newing for another season..but now since the show is gone, so is the movies you longed for for so long. brian wright said the shows success was dependant on the making of the movies. you bunch of dumb asses. hope your happy with your decisions to not tune in and watch a great show. now nothing left of that stupid channel to even watch. R.I.P SGU, SGA, SG-1. cant forget "sci-fi"

    • gillian says:

completely agree.  SGU was actually getting us back to the original motion picture's intent which was mythic and grand and very serious.  loved it.  and now its all gone.

  11. Selket says:

    The First season Killed SGU.

It felt like a crude rippoff from BSG. I have nothing against mature entertainment but SGU disregarded all things that made SG1 and SGA great and enjoyable.

The second season got far better. I just finished watching ep17 and i must say "WOW" great season so far. Seems this is the end. Still it wasnt enough to bring back to fanbase who turned away after the first few eps of Season 1.

    So what to watch now?

    Startrek GONE

    Star Gate GONE

The Event will end soon too.

I cannot name any other Sci fi series that hasnt been canned (or is on the verge of beeing canned). Seems Intelligent scifi has just been extinct.

  12. CheyenneSG1 says:

SGU was nothing like BSG, except Destiny was a ship in space!

Stargate fans should have backed the franchise to the hilt or went away and stayed quiet, but No! The amount of SGA fans that bad mouthed SGU was ridiculous and seriously went along way to ending the franchise.

I am so disappointed that Stargate is no-more but not surprised.

IF I was MGM or SYFY I would lock Stargate away and throw away the key till so called fans can appreciate what they had and get behind the franchise instead of bitching & moaning!

Talk about shooting ourselves in the foot.

    • SCIFIDRAGON says:

Why can't people just watch and let watch? I've never seen SG1 or Atlantis but that doesn't mean that I have to hate it and complain about it. Even if you think SGU is bad, please don't spoil it for other fans!

  13. Roj says:

THIS WAS A TERRIBLE SHOW. Atlantis was the shit – this was a bad version of Galactica.

Even the commercial promos had a similar feel to Galctiaca, with the heavy drums and shit.

The worst of all is that fat nerd Eli Wallace who made unfunny jokes. That is the team's science guy!?! What a joke.

  14. Thomas says:

I feel people who are bashing SGU because it is too unlike SGA or SG-1 don't realize that is basically comparing apples to oranges.  The basis (stranded in space with limited resources) is entirely different from either of the two predecessors.  Even in SGA the team could get help from Earth of Deadelus when needed.  SGU has gotten exponentially better in the second season and it's being killed of before it's time in my opinion.

  15. me says:

I'll admit that it took a little while for SGU to grow on me, but season two kept getting better and better. Last week's episode "Epilogue" was one of the best things I've seen on TV since Lost and BSG, inspiring me to look online to see where the franchise was headed. And I find out the show's done… fuck.

In short… this sucks monkey balls.

I haven't been this bummed out since Firefly was cancelled. All of the other shows on TV are mediocre at best, there is literally no reason for me to keep cable anymore. Great decision making guys, keep promoting garbage shows like The Event and V and cancel the ones with real storytelling and compelling characters. Why the fuck are there 500+ stations if shows like SGU can't stay on the air? I'm done.

  16. genkumag says:

    Cancelled? Cancelled? Cancelled???

    O crap.

  17. Case says:

I would like to actually see an ending to SGU. Like battlestar. Or lost. They both ended. And it felt good! I can't stand a flat out cancellation!!!! Sucks!

  18. SD says:

mark ,are you going to keep reviewing? There hasn't been anything for a while

  19. I'm so glad this series died but don't get me wrong, I love Stargate. The thing is though, I love the stargate and hated watching episode after episode where the crew of starship Destiny used everything except the Stargate.

  20. JJ says:

All I can say is "Family Guy". Fox nixed that show. It hit the DVD market, made boocoo bucks and WOW, it came back, with at least 6 more seasons, DVDs, a couple of "movies" and not to mention Seth McFarlane's 2 other spin-offs. If ALL us Stargate fans could swallow our "SG1 or SGA was better" pride and support the franchis in general, if network execs will chase the dollar and bring back the franchise. maybe not SGU, but something.

  21. Dany says:

I would really be interested in the story of those so called "Ancients" – Beginning of Ascension and the dispute between them and the Ori.
Also about the Gatebuilders how the Stargate network came to be…
It is like Star Wars, feels like there is no definite beginning with endless of stories to make :)

If not filmatized then at least animatized!. Please, at least something!… audio book? :p
