Stargate Universe: Kino Webisode 23 "We Volunteered To Do This" Recap/Review

After three new episodes since their winter hiatus, Stargate Universe finally released the first Kino webisode for this year. Although, the webisode offered nothing to explain a reaction of the aliens the Destineers (new term courtesy of reader CW!) encountered nor did it try to justify the stupefying events in "Faith". What it did touch base on was an issue that has been an eyesore for viewers of the show since the beginning: the implications with body switching via the Communication Stones.

Fellow TVO writer, Featherlite, as well as other readers of the site, felt that the use of the stones past information based missions was a moral quagmire of epic proportions. For example, having sex with someone's spouse or engaging in behavior that the body's owner wouldn't normally do. Some called the practice lewd and disgusting and often wondered why it was even permitted. Well, we finally got our answer. Are you ready for it?

It's simple: SGC personnel basically volunteers their bodies to the program for the Destineers use. Wow. Are you through blinking in astonishment? Well there's more. But first let me recap real quick.

The webisode starts with Eli interviewing Airman Kelly, who is in Chloe's body, about the experience of being in another person's body across the universe. Keep in mind that it isn't stated if Airman Kelly is male or female, but I'm going to go with female. Airman Kelly vouches that the Destineers deserve a chance to see their loved ones again, which is why "she" volunteered "her" time and body. Eli then ponders if Airman Kelly ever wonders what Chloe is doing in "her" body back on Earth. But the airman says that "she", and other personnel, signed a waiver for the people of the Destiny to use their bodies for personal stuff. The sad part is that the airman can't remember the clause all that well. But the airman does say that personal space goes out the window both ways since "she" saw Chloe's body while taking a shower that morning (which Eli helped show "her" how to use). The airmen also reveals that they can't do anything in the bodies that might screw up the establishing relationships onboard the ship, which Airman Kelly says is too bad since "she" thinks Eli is cute. Um.. Eli declines and the airman, looking pissed, asks if she is done. End of the interview.

Wow. So SGC has a program for their personnel to donate bodies for the survivors of the Icarus Base project to use at their free will? Now, it's not exactly their free will since there is always an escort two steps away, but still... Again. What if someone has sex with someone else's wife and she ends up pregnant by the body donor? STDs are another thing to worry about, but despite me praying to God that they screen people before they let them sign on the dotted line, there is that 'crazy' notion that people actually lie about those things. Again, I am sure they have mandatory blood tests done, but the fact remains that it is still a very.... how can I put it... unconventional practice that makes us look like aliens to our own species. I sure as hell wouldn't sign up, no matter if it is for a "good cause". There are the psychological aspects of this scenario to worry about, as well.

Enough of my ranting on the subject. I am just here to get the ball rolling, because I am dying to hear your thoughts on this...

Seventy years ago, if on radio you head that one day you could WATCH fiction shows and hear them at the same time (and eventually in color too); or that one day you'd be walking around with a blue tooth device stuck in your ear, talking to your friend (who only lives a mile away); or you'd be sitting on your computer, typing and conversing with other people around the world … I'm sure the folks back then would be a tad skeptical as well. There are psychological aspects to watching TV, surfing on the web, talking on the phone too long as well. It's a brave new world after all.

There are no words. Actually, there are, but they are all bad.I'm so glad that people involved in a supersecret project sign waivers for biological experiments on themselves without reading them. I feel much more secure as a citizen of Earth.*headdesk***The airmen also reveals that they can't do anything in the bodies that might screw up the establishing relationships onboard the ship** But this only goes one way? I can't use your body to have sex with any of the coworkers but you can screw anyone on the planet in mine. (On the other hand, nice foreshadowing, TPTB.)*headdesk*

Took you long enough to figure this out. What do you think people were complaining about when the whole issue of lack of consent over actions committed in other people's bodies first came up six months ago when this show launched. This is the writers' way of retconing the whole problem by hand waving it out of existence – never mind that no one in their right mind would ever give consent if they knew what their bodies were going to be used for on this show (remember, Chloe getting drunk at the club, Young committing adultery). The timing of this kino is to try & convince us in an upcoming epsiode that a lesbian woman is actually going to consent to allowing her body be used for heterosexual sex. Funny how SGU isn't showing any straight men permitting their bodies be used for gay sex.Now try this one – what happens if a swapper decides to commit murder or rape or an act of terrorism while in a swappees body – who's guilty? Forensics says its the vehicle body, not the consciousness making the decisions.
