FOX is reportedly working on a new slate of shows for the 2012/2013 season, including the alien cop series Stranger Planet. The genre mash-up series, which was announced to be in development on Monday, follows a Los Angeles police officer who uncovers the truth: that there are aliens living secretly on earth. The cop ends up working with two aliens to solve intergalactic crimes. As you do.
The series, which is headed up by writer Matthew Miller (Chuck, Human Target), is down for a pilot commitment, though no order has been given beyond that.
I'm really unsure how exactly to approach Stranger Planet, especially since there isn't a clear tone to the way the story will be presented. Will it be tongue-and-cheek, like Men in Black? Or will it be played straight, X-Files style? I think it stands a better chance of succeeding in viewership with the former, especially with the stunning lack of viewership bestowed upon most network genre shows.
Stranger Planet will air in some capacity in the 2012/2013 television season (if not, FOX will have to pay a fine due to the pilot order). This fall, FOX will premiere its new genre show Terra Nova, as well as returning sci-fi series Fringe.
Wrong. It will be like Gerry Anderson's Space Precinct.
