Shot for Shot: Movie Scenes that inspired “Stranger Things” Season 2 by IMDB

If you thought every scene in Stranger Things season 2 was unique then you’d better take another look. Granted the material is mostly original and doesn’t steal from anything. Well, there are references and Easter eggs aplenty, but the idea is entirely original in the sense that this show hasn’t been done before and it’s not a reboot. But a lot of the scenes in season 2 come off the inspiration to many other films.

Here’s the video

Here are all the references:

Close Encounters of the Third Kind

The instance in which the door opening shows the unexpected and unexplained phenomenon outside. For Close Encounters it’s the alien ship, for Will it’s the Upside Down come a-calling.

St. Elmo’s Fire

This is a little less obvious but it has to do with the coming of age and the attitude shown by the newcomer to the series, Dacre Montgomery.

Ferris Bueller’s Day Off

Several of the classroom scenes can be attributed to this film, not the least of which involves Mr. Clarke.

The Shining

The aerial camera angles are drawn from this film as you can watch the vehicles winding along the country roads.

Ghostbusters

This was kind of a gimme since the boys are dressed up as Ghostbusters. But Hopper also replicates the mucous scene when he discovers that the trees seem to be rotting in a strange fashion.

Poltergeist

The inspiration from this movie is seen when Eleven tunes the TV to static, which helps her to focus when she’s trying to find someone.

The Karate Kid

This is pretty thin but it’s when Eleven puts the headband over her eyes to shut out the world a little more.

Gremlins

Where did Dustin keep Dart? He kept him in his turtle tank of course, until the little bugger escaped and ate his cat.

Alien

Cats might be finicky but they also know when something is up. If a cat hisses at something pay attention.

The Terminator

The surveillance scene in which Jonathan and Nancy have been detained is a definite throwback.

Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom

There are a few references here such as a few car scenes and when Hopper retrieves his hat.

The Goonies

Sean Astin is in the second season and he’s trying to figure out where to find Hopper on a map. Need I say more?

Invasion of the Body Snatchers

The instant in which Will goes into shock when the soldiers are actively burning the tendrils and scouring the tunnel is taken from this movie.

E.T. the Extraterrestrial

Dustin leaving a trail of food for Dart is a big indicator.

Aliens

The soldiers being surrounded by the demogorgon dogs is the best replicated scene from this movie.

Stand By Me

Steve and Dustin walking the railroad tracks is pretty close, apart from the raw meat.

Jurassic Park

Steve facing down the dogs in the junkyard while the fog rolls in is eerily familiar to the jungle scene in its intensity.

Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back

This one seems pretty thin since the two productions are so vastly different.

Back to the Future

The camcorder scene when Joy is trying to figure out how to use it is pretty much the same as Doc trying to figure out the VHS recorder.

The Exorcist

Will undergoing an impromptu exorcism isn’t much different from Linda Blair in some regards.

Pretty in Pink

Look at the hairstyles and the two characters. This is a big gimme.

Some of the scenes might not have been as obvious, but all of them are pulled from other films and given their own little twist.
