This week on Supernatural: Apocalypse? What Apocalypse? There are mysterious deaths to investigate, people! Priorities.
When a babysitter claws her brains out after her sit-ee puts itching powder on her hairbrush and a man gets electrocuted by an über version of one of those fake little hand buzzers, the boys suspect cursed objects are running rampant in a Nebraska town. So they go to the local novelty magic shop, thinking the owner might be a powerful witch, but no dice. The next night, a man gets all of his teeth yanked out by a Jim Belushi-esque Tooth Fairy. There are a couple of other odd afflictions showing up (pop rocks and coke causing ulcers, Dean gets hair on his palms from doin' the Han Solo, etc.)... sounds an awful lot like that season 3 episode, right? Right. Er... wrong. Childhood myths are coming true! Which is only slightly removed from fairy tales coming true. Whatever.
The source of these problems is an adorable, independent little kid named Jesse. Everything that Jesse believes comes true. Jesse's adopted, so Sam and Dean check out the real mom. She's of the suspicious sort because she was possessed when she immaculately conceived Jesse and birthed him. She's also an incredible actress and ends up carrying most of the episode, in my humble opinion. The boys consult with Castiel, who advises they kill Jesse because he's the Anti-Christ (half human, half demon, and stronger than both). The demons "lost" him and no one's gonna be safe if they find him. Sam draws the line at killing little kids and Dean agrees, suggesting they take Jesse to Bobby after they tell him the truth so he can "make the right choice." The Sam-vils are heavy this week, folks.
Jesse's poor mother, though, gets repossessed and heads off to visit her son. Castiel and Ruby's Demon Killing Pig-Sticker get there first. Except Jesse turns him into an action figure. Hee. Dean tells Jesse that he's an X-Man Superhero, but before he can take Jesse to see Xavier... I mean, Bobby, Mommy shows up and throws the boys around the room with her telekinetic powers. It's not Thursday if Sammy's not getting strangled! Mommy tells Jesse that his life is one big lie, which angers little Jesse and shit starts shaking and flaming until Sam tells him the whole truth and nothing but the truth, imploring him do the right thing, to make the right choice (because if you don't, it'll haunt you the rest of your life and -- owwwAAANVIL). Jesse expels the demon from Mommy with a word and Dean concludes that he's "awesome."
Jesse eventually agrees to go to Bobby's place after Sam deploys the Puppy Dog Eyes and explains all of the crappy shit that happens when you're stuck in this dumb war. Jesse goes up to say goodbye to his parents and then disappears. Seems he teleported himself to Australia, and the boys probably aren't going to find him. That's wholly unsatisfying. "Hey, look! The Anti-Christ! Look at all the cool shit he can do! Oh. Now he's gone. Glad we know he's out there... somewhere."
Back in the car, Dean laments that they destroyed Jesse's life by telling him the truth and starts to understand why parents lie to their kids (to protect them from the REAL evil). "The more I think about it, the more I wish dad had lied to us," Dean says. "Yeah, me too," agrees Sam. Wait. I thought we got this straight in "Jump the Shark," right? What you don't know can hurt you. And eat your guts and leave you in a crypt for a midnight snack. Ask the youngest Winchester about it. OH, WAIT. He's dead. Great logic, guys.
I thought I was going to rupture something when Castiel sat on that whoopie cushion :D
That little boy freaked out a bit (I think being all on his own- despite how powerful he is) he has a giant bull's eye on his ass for the demons, and I am with you on the anvils- I had to dodge a few myself.
Oh Sammy, NOW you learn your lesson?? Do you see why Dean did everything to try and protect you and steer you out of harm's (and Ruby's) way?
