I've got five Supernatural season 6 spoilers to share with you in today's article. The first is a follow up to a casting rumor we posted a little while ago, stating that Mitch Pileggi, who previously played the brothers' grandfather (Samuel Campbell) in a flashback episode (and, you know, DIED), will be a recurring guest star in the new season. EW now 100% confirms that this will be true.
Uh...okay? Yeah, I don't get it either.
I’m a longtime fan of Mitch’s work,” gushes executive producer/new showrunner Sera Gamble. “And we all thought he did an amazing job the first time around, so we’re excited he was game to [return].”
What brings Gramps back? “For one thing, he’s a Campbell — from Sam and Dean’s mom’s side of the family,” reminds Gamble, “which, unlike their dad’s, has actually been into hunting for a very long time. There’s a whole side of Sam and Dean’s history that they know nothing about. We’ll get to find out a bit about it this season.”
Well, that didn't answer anything, did it? Ms. Gamble, did you forget that Grandpa died back in the 1970s? I am seriously interested in how they'll bring him back and make it convincing. If they're going the other route - that the boys will spend a lot of time back in the 1970s when their grandfather was alive - I don't think I'll enjoy it that much. But I like the presence of strong father figures on this show, especially fathers who act better than Daddy Winchester (no offence, John, but you were kind of tough on the boys). It would also be fun to see Bobby and Grandpa Winchester go toe-to-toe for the role of surrogate father in the boys' life. Someone make that happen.
The second spoiler concerns Bobby. The fourth episode of the new season will be Bobby-centric. The last Bobby-centric episode (Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid in season 5) was terrific. Jim Beaver plays awesome like no one's business. Bobby's episode, according to Digital Spy, will also feature a character named Marcy Ward: "a capable homemaker with a crush on her neighbor" who is "attractive in a down-to-earth/woman-next-door way."
The third piece of news is confirmation of the season 6 episode premiere title: "Exile on Main Street". No word yet on the premiere date or what this episode means, but if I had to hazzard a guess (because Supernatural episode titles always relate to the episodes), then I'd say it speaks to Dean's new, normal life with Lisa and Ben.
The fourth spoiler is a casting call for a new recurring character. EW has stated that the producers are looking for a late 30s to mid-40s year old actor to play a new recurring character named Christian.
Described as “capable, calm under pressure, and very good at his job,” Christian has a special relationship to Sam and Dean.
Interesting. Could Christian be another member of the boys' family? I doubt they'll introduce another Winchester brother like Adam (although the age of this Christian pretty much disproves that theory), but maybe he's related to them in another way. Could he also be related to the Grandpa storyline? I like the introduction of recurring characters. I've noticed that this show hasn't been too kind to them - what with the deaths of characters like Pam, Ellen, Jo, Ash, etc.
The fifth bit of news is some information from the producers, who repeat what we've all been suspecting for some time - that the show will not only go back to its roots, but will also lessen the scope in season 6.
The producers of Supernatural have revealed that the forthcoming sixth season will return the focus to lead characters Sam and Dean Winchester.According to SFX, executive producer Ben Edlund said that the show will distance itself from the epic storylines of the past.
“Our scope has been so big - you’re not supposed to do it that big!” he said. “But the fun of it is, ‘What do you do after the Apocalypse?’ We have to get very small because the only way to really tell a story is through change, through crescendo and diminuendo. We’re going to get more human, more personal.”
New producer Sera Gamble added: “The show has never really been about God and the Devil, or angels and demons, it’s a show about Sam and Dean. We’re going to go from the epic back to a more intimate story.”
The programme's creator Eric Kripke praised Gamble and fellow producer Robert Singer, admitting that the pair "have some pretty exciting notions for where to take the show”.
He also revealed that despite quitting his role as showrunner, he plans on “being around… I’m there to be the safety net and to make sure it all stays within the tone of Supernatural”.
And have no fear, Castiel will most definitely be back next season, according to producer Phil Sgriccia.
So that's all I've got for now...stay tuned for more Supernatural spoilers. Hopefully we'll have more for you coming out of the panel at Comic Con. I'll be there (yeeeee!!!!).
