I have to say that I am shocked, given all the negative comments that were flying around various sites regarding some lines in different episodes… ie “Can you be more gay”, “Go be gay for the poor dead intern”, etc. I am glad they are getting recognition- that’s just not the recognition I was expecting .

I’m lazy, when does the award show air or get announced? I don’t know if the GLAAD awards are even televised.

It appears from GLAAD’s official site that there are three different Media Award Shows this year in LA, NYC, and San Francisco, all on different days. I could not find when the individual winners would be announced, only who is being given special awards at each of the three shows. It did not appear any are going to be televised, but I’ll admit, after finding out there were three shows, I was too confused to research further and see if any of the three would be airing on television. It gets lost in the ticket prices and other information, if it is there at all.

It is about time Supernatural got nominated for something, no matter how weird it seems that they would get a GLAAD nomination!

I agree, Pixiewings, I would not have thought Supernatural would even be on GLAAD’s radar.

Have to disagree, fan – I’m one of Those Viewers. I don’t care if Liberace himself comes back from the dead to give SPN a big bedazzled award; that ep still disgusts me.

    • faninohio says:

No worries, Otter. I appreciate and respect any and all opinions. (For the record I knew you felt this way but I never put you in that category…you’re far too cool in my book).

I never get worked up over stuff like this. To me it’s just a fictional character and I don’t equate that with anything in reality. It’s probably not the most profound way of thinking but there you go. It’s why I don’t get as outraged as I’ve seen some get over Dean’s horny ways or anything.

      • Kripke Owns Me says:

I agree with you, fan, to a certain degree. If The Boys were out gay bashing, or running down homosexuals with Metallicar, that would be one thing, but they aren’t.

Dean uses a certain way of speaking that is very common to where The Boys were born. I should know, I was raised in Oklahoma. There are a lot of people in the Midwest and Plains states that use “gay” and “retarded”, for another example, and they absolutely do not mean them in any derogatory manner towards homosexuals or the mentally challenged, it is just a pattern of speech for a certain generation. They don’t even equate the words with homosexuality or special needs, at all.

Gen-Xers, my generation, used these two words a ton, and never meant them in a negative way towards homosexuals or the mentally impaired. It never even occurred to me that “retarded” meant anything other than someone who didn’t think things through before speaking really asinine things, and were, therefore, being “retarded”. This is coming from a girl who was part of a Camp Fire Girls group who had three girls in it who were extremely mentally challenged, the four of us who weren’t challenged in any way had to help them out with snack time. We never referred to them as “retarded”, it would not have occurred to us to make this connection. They were just special and needed a little extra help from us to do things we took for granted.

In terms of the word “gay”, again, Gen-Xers love this one. My brothers and I used this one a lot on each other, and, fuck knows, we were NOT referring to the sexual preferences of our siblings (see my Brothers & Sisters recap for further clarification of this issue). We just meant one of us was being stupid. We did NOT mean that gay people were stupid, we did not connect our definition of gay with homosexuality. It was not a word we connected to sexuality in any way, and I think I speak for a lot of my generation when I say that.

If the Boys were using the “N” word, I would be out of there so fast you would just see a cartoon puff of smoke where I used to be. If they were using “gay” to be derogatory towards an entire group of people, I would be out of there, same with “retarded”. It is just not my opinion that they mean these words in that way, and that’s where I let it stand.

Hell, if I am going to get up in arms and desert this fandom for anything, it would be Wincest, but I just ignore that aspect of the fandom and move on. It’s an effective policy.

It’s funny you should say that, Whiteotter, because I am having trouble even remembering that episode, and you guys KNOW I watch the eps. eleventy billion times each. Except for that one, apparently. I must have had the same reaction, but I repressed it, only enough to know I don’t want to watch it again? Did that make sense?

In related news, why can’t spelling/grammar check be a little bit more intelligent and quit telling me “Whiteotter” is misspelled? Since when did proper nouns have a correct/incorrect spelling, and if it is a spelling/grammar check, it should be able to identify that as a proper noun in the context of that sentence. Seriously? Seriously!!!

I can’t reply to your reply for some reason, KOM, so I thought I’d try here: IIRC, my issue isn’t with Dean or Sam’s lines in that ep – although I have blocked a lot of it out, so I could be wrong. It’s the two loser guys, and the writers who wrote their lines, that infuriated me. I think SPN deserves boxes of awards for a whole lot of things, as you know, but this is the one area where they repeatedly drop the ball, IMO, and it’s immensely frustrating to me.
