Supernatural: Misha Collins To Return as a Series Regular in Season 9
Here's some good news for Supernatural's Castiel fans: Misha Collins has confirmed (and the CW has as well) that he'll be a series regular for the show's ninth season. Not only that, but he'll also be directing an episode next season, thereby joining series star Jensen Ackles as one of the show's actors who has also directed for the show.
The CW series was recently given an early renewal (along with Arrow and The Vampire Diaries) for the 2013-2014 season, but no formal casting announcements had been made. However, it's safe to say now that we'll be seeing more of Castiel as the show goes forward.
Misha Collins was a series regular in seasons 5 and 6, but became a recurring actor and then disappeared for a good chunk of season 7 when Castiel supposedly "died" after being possessed by a group of Leviathans. Castiel has been a recurring character in season 8 after he was saved from Purgatory, but he recently disappeared again in episode 8.10 after returning to Heaven under Naomi's influence. He's expected to return in a few episodes and with the current myth arc of the show focused on the tablets dictated by God, including the recently discovered Angel Tablet, it makes sense that Sam and Dean Winchester's heavenly friend will be part of the arc. And we're particularly excited to see how Naomi fits into the bigger picture.
Supernatural airs on Wednesday nights at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT on The CW.

YAY! :D This is fantastic news. Castiel is an amazing part of SPN. Also looking forward to seeing Misha Collins’ work directing an episode!
I’m really looking forward to seeing him as a season regular. Misha is talented and hasn’t been used to his potential in the past few seasons. It’ll be cool to see how he directs an episode as well.
While it’s not quite drunk Cas, I’ll take it.
OMG I’m so happy he will be a series regular again! Castiel is my absolute favourite! Yesssss!
Extremely happy to have Misha back as a regular. Castiel is such an amazing character!
I’m really intrigued by Naomi and her agenda. Is it really her that saved Castiel from purgatory? If she’s working for heaven, why the secrecy?
If the angel tablet is about closing the gates of heaven, will Cas choose humanity or will he go back to his former home?
Eh I am kinda impartial.
I like Cas, but I am over angels. And Cas is an angel. I just hope the writers can write Cas into the storyline in such a way that the show doesn’t become too heaven-focused.
I just don’t care about heaven’s problems anymore. I would much rather see heaven’s gates shut over hell’s. I love Crowley. And the demons.
Given the business with the angel tablets, it is entirely likely (though I wouldn’t go so far as to say definite) that the show is going to eventually lock up both Heaven and Hell, with Cas being left behind on earth.
This makes me so happy. Cas is the reason I started watching the show, and it’s been a sad couple seasons where they haven’t been using him to his full potential. Misha directing an ep is the icing on the cake. :)
My first thought was, oh no less Dean, because Jensen will be getting less time due to the birth of his daughter. It’s only fair, since they did give Jared some lighter episodes. So I expect some Sam & Cas heavy episodes. I love them, but I’m a Dean girl… so it’s mixed impression for me.
Anyone else wondering how Misha will direct Jared, and how Jared will behave? lol
There are a few stories of how the writers don’t write for Sam & Cas together because of the cost of overtime, with Jared & Misha pranking through scenes. With less Jensen, due to his first child, it’ll be an intersting gag reel [and less $$ for classic rock I guess - boo].
