In my humble opinion, there are two men who cry more than any other men on television. One is Lost's Jack Shephard. The other is Supernatural's Dean Winchester.
Except, unlike Jack, Dean has somehow managed to perfect - nay, conquer - the Single, Manly, Perfect Tear (a.k.a. "pretty crying").
A little while ago we put together a slide-show about Supernatural's funniest scenes. And while the show is undoubtably funny, it's also heart wrenching and loves to kick us while we're down. In fact, as Hils (who helped me with this slide-show!) so eloquently put it: "Supernatural takes our heart and stomps on it, then puts it back together only to stomp on it again".
Truer words were never spoken, folks.
Tonight is the two hour season 6 finale of Supernatural. Given what's been happening recently, with Castiel's betrayal and his new fight against his former allies (the Winchesters and Bobby), I have a feeling that we might be heading into depressing territory, so I thought this was the most appropriate time to break out the slide-show of the most heartbreaking scenes in Supernatural. After all, if Kripke is going to reduce all of you all to tears, I figured I would do the same as well.
Except I'm giving you lots of gorgeous shots of Dean and his Single, Manly, Perfect Tear to enjoy while you relive some of Supernatural's most desolate scenes. And I even threw in a few shots of Sam and his messy, messy crying. The scenes are presented below, in no particular order. Although I admit that I put the particularly heartbreaking scenes towards the end.
When you're done with your sniffling over the photos below, go take a look at our previous (mostly happier!) slide-shows, including: Coolest Villains, Castiel's Best Lines, Favorite Guest Stars, and the one that's guaranteed to make you smile: Hottest Winchester Moments.
You're seriously not going to want to miss the season 6 finale of Supernatural tonight (beginning at 8:00 p.m.). If you want a little taste of what's to come in tonight's season finale, then there's a few articles you should go through, including: a trailer, an episode preview, a sneak peek, a second sneak peek and promo photos (here, here and here).

A little too Sam lite for me to be honest. I thought him seeing Jessica die was probably in my top five sad moments and the moment where Bobby tells Sam 'we're trying to help you boy' and Sam moves Bobby's gun to his heart and says 'then shoot' was just the most emotional moment ever bar Dean holding a dead Sam. Sam asking Dean to 'just be my brother again cos…well just cos' is my single favourite moment of this show ever and it didn't get in the top 25? I don't believe it.
Good points. I had forgotten about 'just 'cause' but that totally belongs in there. Also Sam's reaction in the hospital when Dean has heart failure in Faith, and his phone call to their dad. And Sam's face as he watched the medics try to revive Dean in In My Time Of Dying. And Sam begging The Trickster to bring Dean back in Mystery Spot. Yes there are quite a few Sam moments missing. But still a good list.
I could have easily included a hundred photos (probably at least one scene from nearly every episode). Doing the slide-shows are always SO HARD because it's nearly impossible to pick and choose from whatever topic I'm doing, whether it's most heartbreaking or coolest guest stars or whatever (and don't get me started on Hottest Winchester Moments…THAT was impossible to narrow down!).
Since tonight is a double episode, maybe you can extend the list a bit more for us? We'd all be appreciative, I'm sure.
Actually, I've got a second slide-show coming very soon…. Bit different from what I've done before, but I think it'll prove useful for the season finale!
Great!! Thanks.
Great list. So many gut wrenching scenes. Its a wonder they are still sane.
Sam's crying feels so more REAL to me than Deans. Dean cries pretty and kind of fake but when Sam cries and it's uncontrollable and wrecked and just all over his face it hits me in ways that Dean never does.
That's a very interesting point I hadn't considered, Ruthie…. Plus, he does it less frequently than Dean as well.
For me, it doesn't matter which one is crying, I'm always crying. I understand what you are saying though, but I think that their reactions are totally tied to their personalities. Dean tends to bury everything, so he is a bit more controlled when some of those long buried emotions finally do surface. It isn't fake, it's his attempt at strength in the face of a potential breakdown. Where as Sam is the angry, emotional wreck and when he cries it all comes tumbling out. He doesn't hold back, all the emotion and frustration and fear is written all over his reaction.
Thank you for the slideshow. I loved all the scenes you mentioned as heartbreaking moments, except Crowley (I like the guy but it didn't upset me). Yet, the one scene I find that is the most heartbreaking of all is Dean talking to John's headstone in "What Is and Should Never Be". Just thinking about it has me tearing up. He's always been a hero, but that scene and the one after where the dream family begs him to stay show us the truth depth of his character and just how much of hero Dean is. He was happy, truly happy and he gave it all up to save other people's happiness.
Actually, Melody, we debated including that very scene. In fact, it was the #1 runner up. Unfortunately, I had to cap the number of slides somewhere, but I totally get what you mean! :)
Another one I just thought of that kickstarts the water works is Dean's first encounter with Luci/Sam in "The End". It's the heartbreak on his face when he first sees him, it's almost like he didn't really believe Future Dean that Sam had said yes, he had to see it to believe. The entire scene is terrifying and emotional, but it's the initial reaction that really gets me.
I'd throw on my list somewhere as well the great scene when Dean escaped from the panic room and then Cas finds him and beats the shit out of him. Wow, he was a bloody mess, but more than that it was how angry Cas was, how frustrated he got at what he saw as Dean's betrayal. Which made his apology later about Dean not being the "broken shell of man" that Cas had thought he was even more emotional. I didn't laugh or smile, I was emotionally brought back to that moment when Dean was bloody on the ground, Cas standing above him ready to strike and Dean just begging him to do it. Threads from those scenes are so prevalent in "The Man Who Would be King," just in reverse, and throw in Cas begging God….wow powerful stuff.
The Scene in The Man who would be King at the end where Dean is telling Cas that he is like a brother to him and he is telling him Not to do it. That was an emotional scene for me.
I cried at that one all three times I've so far watched it.
I think the saddest scene in the entire series is when Dean throws away the necklace Sam gave him. When a Winchester brother dies, we all know he's coming back, so it's not as tragic. But that simple symbolic scene just absolutely wrecked me. I'm still hoping he'll somehow get it back.
Thank you for putting up the slide show. For me, the saddest scene is the one when the two brothers had their Christmas together after the John died. I was crying so hard watching this ep. It was just the two of them, lonely and lost and never gotten a warm Christmas in their life that broke my heart.
I know if we put all the angsty moment & Dean single tear, this clips would probably reach hundred or more. But I just gonna add some more & those not mentioned by others. lol!
Mary told Dean she didn't want her children to end up as hunters & Dean reaction to that.
Sam & Dean watches John body being cremated (This was the single tear moment & it was the ONLY moment the boys were crying together. It should made the list.)
Sam told the young John that he finally understand his father.
Dean asking God for help (also single tear moment)
Dean begs John/Azazel not to kill him.
At the end of Long Distance Call when Dean tells Sam what he really feels.
The boys as they burn Adams body.
Bobby/demon told Sam to lose his number & Sam pitifully just nodded.
Another single tear moment, Dean facing Sam/Lucifer in the future. But I was kinda busy thinking how hot Jared looked in white suit.
Dean realizing that Sam had let him get turned into Edward Cullen.
Lucky the dog, as he trot off alone.
Sam found out he had been walking around without a soul by Cas.
The boys & Bobby surrounded Cas in holy fire.
the one scene that will always get me is where dean talks to johns grave. and normally when dean cry's i don't but this one, man it was bad.
i also agree with the fact that there were a few heartbreaking sammy scene i would have included.
that and anytime one of the boys goes into the panic room
I know I'm a bit late to the party on this, and that the emphasis is more on Sam and Dean than on the guest stars, but the scene in the bar in The Magnificent Seven when Tamara is forced to watch as Gluttony makes Isaac drink drain cleaner tore me up for DAYS. Just the little bit of them that we saw in that episode made me like them so much. They were so loving and protective of each other that it hurt to watch as Tamara begged for his life. Then, when the demons reanimated Isaac to taunt Tamara about the death of their daughter – I had actually stopped crying by that point, but that set me off all over again. It's a real testament to Peter Macon's and Caroline Chikezie's acting abilities that they were able to so firmly establish themselves as such a close, loving couple in such a short time frame.
