Supernatural at PaleyFest '11: All the Spoilers, Details & Photos

Shocking Twists Ahead

Overall, we were warned to expect some “shocking twists” in the upcoming episodes. The writers have thrown the actors a few curveballs for their characters that have surprised them, especially for Sam and Dean.

Ben Edlund’s Supernatural Directorial Debut (Bonus Castiel Included!)

Producer/writer Ben Edlund (who’s written both funny and dramatic episodes for the show) is set to make his Supernatural directorial debut in episode 6x20 (the episode before the two-part finale). Edlund has only ever directed one other television episode before: Angel’s “Smile Time” (a terrific episode for that series, if I do say so).

While Edlund wrote “The French Mistake”, don’t expect any funny business for episode 6x20. The episode will be incredibly emotional and will raise the stakes for the last two episodes of the season. The cast was very happy about Edlund directing. Because he’s been such an integral part of the show, Misha, for example, said he was a director who knows about the entire series and can give the actors very good insight about their characters.

The episode will also be told from Castiel’s point of view and will heavily feature his character. Expect to hear about “moments from Castiel’s childhood”. What does that mean? We’ll have to wait and see.

The Two-Part Season Finale

The two hour season finale will be airing with back-to-back episodes on May 20. We know that Sera Gamble wrote part 1, while Eric Kripke wrote part 2. In fact, he just turned in the script and it will start filming on Wednesday, which means the sixth season should be wrapped up in a matter of weeks. Executive producer Robert Singer will be directing the episode. Singer’s directed many episodes, but a few of my favorites include: “Phantom Traveler”, “Salvation”, “Croatoan”, “All Hell Breaks Loose, Part 1”, “Monster Movie”, “Sympathy for the Devil” and “Caged Heat”.

Kripke and Gamble had originally wanted to do the two-part finale as a sort of “movie”, but they turned out to be very episodic because there’s a lot of loose mythology threads that need tying-up. Each episode will have its own self-contained story and don’t necessarily flow together. The transition between the two hours won’t be seamless (unlike, I suppose, the transition between the two parts of “All Hell Breaks Loose”). Kripke warned "It will be awesome in reruns but for the two-hour people will be like 'What?'".

Season 7

There hasn’t been any word yet from The CW regarding a seventh season for the show, but, frankly, I would be very surprised if it didn’t happen. The panel responded that the show is a very solid Friday night performer for the network.

The Series End

Kripke had originally intended the season 5 finale to be the series finale. Despite the show already “ending” once, Kripke says that he has “a very specific coda that I've always had in mind at what point all the characters end up." They apparently never used this end version when the show was renewed for a sixth season and it’s still possible they could one day. But Kripke did say that a lot of the plot ties he had imagined for the series end were in the episode “Swan Song”. Does that mean Sam could end up dead at the end, while Dean goes off to live a normal life? Or is there something more that Kripke had envisioned for the ultimate ending of the series?

A Few Other Tidbits

Jim Beaver said he would love to have a sequel to the Bobby-centric season 6 episode “Weekend at Bobby’s”. Jensen, who directed the episode, said that he would love to direct another episode (probably in season 7, if the show is renewed).

Someone remarked “I hear Supernatural kills off women”. Jim Beaver quickly replied that Supernatural actually kills off everyone.

Edlund joked that he’d love to do a three-camera live episode, but Jensen quickly shot down that idea.

Jim brought up the scene were Bobby had to kiss Crowley as the thing that will haunt him forever: “On my tombstone it's going to say 'He kissed Crowley’." As for how good it was: “I’ve had better” Jim joked.

If you’re still wondering what happened with Dean’s amulet, it looks like you’ll have to keep wondering. Kripke revealed that there are currently no plans to address that loose end or bring the amulet back.

Below are photos from the press line, from the "Frontierland" sneak peek (nothing too spoilery) and the panel.

  1. Thomas says:

Didn't Lucifer take the Colt after Dean tried to shoot him, that's what I thought always happened to it.

    • Clarissa says:

You may be right, Thomas.  I need to go back and watch that episode again to figure out what happened to the Colt.  If that's true, then it makes sense that they need to go back in time to get the Colt again (assuming Lucifer destroyed it, of course).  If you're not right, then I'm not sure.

      • Thomas says:

So I just re-watched the episode and after Lucifer gets up and punches Dean the Colt isn't seen again.  Is it seen at any point after that episode?  Because if it isn't I would hazard a guess at be a reference to Lucifer destroying it.

    • maggie says:

But we saw the Colt in 6×10 Caged Heat when Sam ask fot the gun to Meg and then shot the demon and then Meg ask for the gun and Sam told Meg that she stole the gun from them

      • Clarissa says:

I went back and watched that scene you're talking about and I see that Meg actually stole Ruby's knife from them.  Sam used the knife to kill the demon. I don't see the Colt in that episode, unless it's somewhere else.

  2. Shannon says:

I know it had no real meaning, but what happened to the silver band Dean used to wear on his right hand? It disappeared suddenly in season 5.

    • Clarissa says:

An excellent question, Shannon. I have no idea. Around what episode did it disappear, do you recall?  I think I need to do an article about all the unanswered questions of Supernatural – including the missing jewelry!

    • cindy says:

Jensen said the ring was bent out of shape from stunts on the show and it was decided to get rid of it. It had no sentimental value it was just picked up by Dean in his travels around the country. He used it to open beer bottles.

  3. cindy says:

I hope the show brings back the lady sheriff I think her name is Kim Rhodes. She was in Weekend at Bobbys and another episode where her zombie son killed her husband. and the FBI agent. Eluding the law always adds something to the show.

  4. Tamara says:

I love Loretta Devine and enjoyed the character of Missouri, but thank Jes*s she was unavailable! What would we do without our Bobby?!
