Supernatural Season 7 Premiere Review: Suffering For Your Sins and Choices

Suffering For Your Choices

The other main thread in the Supernatural premiere episode concerned Sam.  As much as Sam has suffered over the years, it's not hard to believe that his current predicament could be the worst.  There may never be a cure to be found for this.  Throughout the episode, Sam was plagued by hallucinations.  He was going to tell Dean, but Dean simply could not take any more bad news.  But Sam couldn't hide the truth forever and Dean confronted him about his problems.  The end of the episode brought a chilly scene: Lucifer appeared to tell Sam that nothing around him was real.  That he was actually still trapped in the cage and everything else was simply a lie and a new and interesting form of torture.  That was the last we saw of Sam in this episode as he mysteriously disappeared.

The trailer for episode 7.02 (view it here) and the photos (here) show a terrible future for Sam.  Lucifer's words have messed with his mind in a convincing and perhaps permanent way.  It's one thing to have him hallucinate meat hooks and blood, it's quite another twist to have him doubting his reality.  The question is how Dean will convince Sam that he's not still in Hell and whether Sam will ever believe it.  How do you convince a crazy person that they are crazy?  How do you convince someone that the world is real when they've seen the worst corners of Hell?

Yet, Sam's problem has to be managed somehow.  He can't be going off the rails in every single episode, because nothing would ever get done.  So what I'm interested in is how they'll manage to put at least a temporary bandage on the situation.

I was very happy with Supernatural's season premiere.  I was delighted that Castiel managed to redeem himself in the end and the leviathans present a new and different challenge for the Winchesters and Bobby.  Like I said, the next episode will be crucial, and I, for one, can't wait to see it.

This was a great episode. Misha has always be a delight to have on the show and I'm very much enjoying this turn of events. He appears to be having a blast playing bad, so I'm going to sit back and enjoy everything he'll give. I'm starting to wonder how Dean is still standing. That man has been beaten down time and time again. Nothing ever works out for him, nothing. Everytime we think he might catch a break something else happens. I feel so bad for Dean. I remember Season 5 and what Famine the horseman told him about being completely empty. I'm so afraid we are going to see him in that dark place again, and how can we not. He's lost everything except Bobby and Sam, Sam's going nuts, Cas is now possessed by leviathans, Ben and Lisa don't even remember who he is, and he's about to have to give up his baby because it's so recognizable!! How can he go on? I'm tearing up just thinking about the crap that has been heaped upon him for the past six years and beyond. Please writers, give him some tiny little bit of hope, something to hold on too or this guy is going to spiral out of control fast.
