Supernatural Slide-Show: Season 6 Questions That Still Need Answers

In our past Supernatural slide-shows we've look at our picks for best villains, favorite guest stars, and hottest Winchester scenes.  For this slide-show, we're going to take a different angle and look at what we think are several questions that have arisen in season 6 of Supernatural that haven't been fully answered (or answered at all).

Most other seasons of Supernatural have focused on one over-arching goal.  For example, season 1 was about Sam and Dean's search for John, season 2 was about killing Azazel, season 3 was about trying to get Dean out of his deal to go to Hell, and season 5 was about defeating the devil and ensuring that Sam and Dean didn't become vessels for Lucifer and Michael.  Of course, looking back at it now, seasons 1 through 5 were also about the Winchesters preventing the apocalypse.  When the show was renewed for a sixth season, a sort-of reboot was needed.

While season 6 has had some great individual episodes (including, but not limited to, the genius that was "The French Mistake"), at this point I have a lot of questions about the many individual storylines.  It's hard to see how all of them tie together.  I have no doubt that they likely will, but at this point in time, there are some answers I'd like to know.

Below is our list/slide-show of questions that still need answers.  You may think one or two of them have been answered, but there are still questions I have regarding certain loose ends.  One or two of them are also a bit spoilery given what we know of future episodes (#3 and #13, to be exact, so skip them if you don't want to read any spoilers).

Let me know what you think.  Do you think some of these questions have been fully answered?  Do you agree with my picks?  And do you have any questions about the season that weren't listed in the slide-show below?  Sound off in the comments.

Also, don't miss an all new episode of Supernatural tonight.  Tonight's episode is entitled "Frontierland".  If you missed our pre-coverage of the episode, then go read through the following articles for "Frontierland" we've posted over the last week:

Why was Crowley really searching for Purgatory?

Picture 1 of 15

Eve emerged from Purgatory after Crowley was killed by Castiel, so given what we know now, I have my doubts that Crowley was looking for Purgatory just to expand his "kingdom". I doubted his reasons even before he died. I think the reason he really wanted to find Purgatory hasn't been fully explained yet, but I hope it will be.

  1. Jaclyn says:

1: Crowley was clearly searching for Purgatory because he needs more soul space. Clearly the hinting at the power of these souls and why demons collect them in the first place (to make more demons) is evident. A bigger army?

2: Samuel was clearly brought back to open the arc of the Campbell's up a little – I doubt we've heard the last of them. Just wish (even though it was a exhilirating episode) that Gwen hadn't died.

I can't check each question and answer here because the slide show refreshes the page. So I'm going to jot them down and throw some ideas in and maybe we can look again when we've all been torn asunder by the season finale(s).

    • Clarissa says:

      Hi Jaclyn,

Thanks for the comment. I agree that some answers to questions have certainly been hinted (as you've said), but I wish we were given more concrete answers :)  If you're right about Crowley's motives, I guess the question is why Crowley wants to increase his soul space.  Is it just to expand his empire or is there another reason?  Further, is it somehow related to what's going on in Heaven?

As for Samuel, yes, he was probably brought back to open up the family storyline, but since now the Campbell family is all gone and pretty much had minimal interaction with the brothers I'm really curious as to what was the point of them.  Is there another reason to involving them in the storyline when they weren't really given prominence?

I REALLY like your idea of seeing if the finale answers all of the questions.  Maybe I should do a followup with the same questions to see if they were definitively answered.  Great suggestion!

    • cassi says:

But what would Crowley have done with Purgatory? It's not empty but filled with powerful monster souls. I think Crowley would have goten ripped apart by them. So I don't really buy the whole location, location answer. I hope they got a better explanation.

  2. cassi says:

Did you forget? Kripke told us at the Paleyfest that the amulet was doing a guest role in OTH. Lol No, I think they will bring it back but save it for a special episode. Maybe in seaven 7 or the the season 6 finale. I have nearly the same questions. The only difference is I don't care about God. Supernatural's God doesn't seem to care about anybody, actually he was responsible for the whole mess in the first place, raising Michael and Lucifer, so I really really don't want him to come back. The guy left after Sam and Dean 'passed his test'  and let Sam ROT IN THE CAGE!!! I hope he stays lost together with the Anti-christ in Australia.

I'm pretty confident that they will answer most questions, especially the ones about the souls, what Crowley wanted with purgatory, how the Mother of all fits in, who brought Sam and Samuel back, what Castiel is planning and what happens to Sam when the wall comes down. I'm really excited for the reveals, I hope the Supernatural writers don't disappoint.

I think it's pretty obvious what happend to Sam in the cage: He got tortured by Michael and Lucifer in the cage. Depending on your imagination, there are millions of things that the angels could have done to Sam. And unless WB gave them more money I don't expect to see it. If we're lucky Sam might talk about it like Dean did in 'Heaven and Hell'.

Besides the stuff about Crowley's motivation and how everything ties together, I really want to know why the dragons collected virgins if they only needed one girl to free the Mother of All. Unfortunately, I don't think it's  unlikely that they will answer it.

I think this season after they killed Rufus, Gwen and Samuel, the most likely candidates to die are Ben and Lisa and if they really want to shock us and end the season with a cliffhanger, Bobby and Castiel. And maybe a few other characters who have appeared in one or two episodes.

    • Clarissa says:

So I guess the amulet is turning into a big star, huh :P

I think you're right, that the finale probably will wrap things up, I'm just curious as to how they'll do it.  I have a few theories that I've discussed with people and that people have told me, but I didn't want to throw them forward here in case we're all completely off the mark!

Yeah, Sam probably WAS tortured.  I guess my sick brain just wants to know the details.  But we might learn more about it when the wall in Sam's head cracks (which will), like when we saw him on fire during that little blackout.

Haha, great question about the dragons!  Maybe if the first girl didn't work, they would have to try another one?

As for who will die, Lisa and Ben probably do seem like the safest bet at this point, but I don't know.  Guess we'll have to wait and see!

  3. deborah says:

Perhaps Sam being brought back without a soul was an experiment by someone (God; angels; someone else) to see how humans would fare without a soul or who didn't realize humans needed a soul (Jesse; the anti-christ boy from season five)? Death told Dean that it was all about the souls. . .  Samuel?  I'm glad he's gone. I found the Campbell clan storyline boring.  Castiel?  I'm troubled by the turn in his character this season; his being less than truthful with Dean and Sam; especially, Dean.  But then, perhaps he is protecting them from something; he clearly still is their friend. Or, as you say, perhaps he is resorting to doing things of which he knows they may not approve (if he's harvesting souls, what does that say about the souls who are/were in heaven and is he having them taken on earth prematurely, too).  The Mother of All? IF  she is the original Eve, then could it be possible Dean and Sam are linked to her (maybe their line goes back to Cain and Abel)? What would that say about them, if they are linked to the Mother of All Monsters?  God?  Will God step in to stop perhaps both Raphael and Castiel; step in and reinforce order?  Maybe; maybe not. Maybe God is waiting to see who wins; what happens. Adam? I don't see him returning, but I could be wrong. As for the finale answering everything, they do have to leave something ongoing to carry over into season seven.

  4. Jaclyn says:

    Possible spoilers.

3: Who really brought Sam back from Hell and why? I confess, the only entity I can see being strong enough – given we've already discussed how many Angel's it took to get Dean out and if it was that easy to bust Lucifer out the Demons and rogue Angels would have done it. I am leaning toward Raphael if anyone, purely because it could have been an attempt to drag Lucy out and it failed – to get the Apocalypse back on track… but who knows.

    4: See above.

5: Define Sam in hell, his soul or his body – I guess we have no idea. Next, is it truly as bad as everyone is making out. Is it not possible that Lucy and Co held the soul because maybe that was their only way to bust out?

6: The wall is coming down (I think we know this from Paley. It will mean some pretty dreadful battles inside his head to remain sane.

7: Adam is definitely someone to bear in mind – if he ever makes it out and given who is riding him, I have a feeling there is trouble ahead.

8: I think Death was hinting at what we glimpsed in 617 that the battle for heaven, Earth and hell could be contingent on the power of souls.

9: It is clear the human soul must have some form of amazing energy that so many want the darn things. Is it possible that this is the link to God in that universe?

10: Castiel clearly needs the strength and possibly he's realised God is part of the human soul?

11: I think Castiel is too ashamed of what he has become to be up front with the boys. They obviously mean a lot to him – and no I doubt he would ever willingly or meaning to, betray them.

12: I think God is the SOULs collectively (don't ask I just wonder at the power) and where did they come from?

13: I sadly believe, for many reasons we're losing Bobby – second guess would be Cas.

14: I think the souls are the clue – the battle to rule lies with the souls, if God is the collective soul, it would explain why demons/angels want them and Eve wants to destroy them.

15: Amulet is in Dean/Bobby or Sam's possession. I think it's coming back.

  5. McDana says:

I so don't care about the amulet, unless bringing it back means something, like Sam fished it out of the trash and hid it before diving into the cage and now digs it back up and reforges it into a bullet.  That'd be cool.  It would be interesting if Adam was  'saved' before hitting bottom with Sam, it would make Sam's story even sadder.

There are still a few characters to kill, Balthazar, Dr Visyak, Rafael… so I don't see kicking off Bobby as an option, especially since JB has mentioned he is waiting for word from CW for 7th season.

  6. trackerm says:

    1) crowley had to go somewhere.. lore for purgatory is a holding tank so to speak before heaven or hell, so purgatory for crowley where he has somehow gotten wind of eve. crowley is narcissistic, power grabbing & wants to be the king of all so it stands to reason that he would be deal making with eve. i'm sure that he also has raphael, virgil & their criminal followers in hand: blood communication wirh virgil makes me think that azazel is in the mix.

    2) samuel was pulled from hell with a soul or so says castiel, did he lie then to the boys about samuel's having a soul or that the soul couldn't be brought back(sam)? or was sam's soul left for a bigger reason, maybe to be used by cass & crew for angelic reasons to win the war in heaven(leaving it with the 2 archangels, forming it(sam) into something really ugly to deal with eve/crowley/raphael?

    3) we know that cass is keeping things from the boys. i don't think that it's cass' nature to lie but he absolutely would leave out info. there is no way that he would hurt dean, cass honors God's use of michael using dean, i believe really is the basis for his total committment to dean. sam is a different story.

    4) i totally disagree that chuck is God. truly being a nonreligious show(!) & then using a character(chuck) for God, would create way too much angst for us religious nuts! my very personal opinion!

    5) we know that lisa/ben cannot work but i've thought all along, what if lisa dies, dean takes ben because although he would never grow him as a hunter, he would not not take care of him, bobby gets ben(season 7) & ben does become a hunter, ben is old enough. way out of the realm of no roots i realize but this show pushes boundaries so i'm thinking this could happen. lisa/ben story is hated among fans so maybe this is my wish for dean, to have ben, to grow his family without lisa, this means lisa's death of course.

    6) God created mankind with souls.  dealing with the soul issue will close the heaven & hell thing so that the demons/angels storyline will be wrapped up & season 7 will start fresh with the boys fighting baddies: monsters, lore….

    7) may 17th cannot get here fast enough!!!!!!!!!!!! season 7!!!!

    • Clarissa says:

To be honest, I kind of hate the idea of Ben becoming an orphan and then a hunter.  I feel like if they brought him into the life it would be a bit much.  I'm sort of hoping that won't happen.

  7. trackerm says:

    8) the amulet. the God connection is not the issue with fans.  we love this show because of lots of reasons but the main reason is the brotherhood of dean & sam. that amulet is the absolute total physical of their realtionship.

jensen feels the brass weight chipping his teeth… we see little sammie handing it it over to his big brother as a Christmas gift in lieu of another non holiday celebrated hunter style. that picture never leaves my memory in this relationship!

  8. Clarissa says:

Love the theories being thrown out and the debate going on here.  And I love that Supernatural is such a complex show with so many elements that we CAN sit here with our theories and debate about it.

  9. Jaclyn says:

Another thing that strikes me this season is the amazing dialogue and research that's gone into every single aspect. We know these guys are good – but sometimes I've just watched and thought Damn, there guys are better than good, they're awesome.

I think Lisa and Ben is an obvious choice and to be honest, yes a few like Lisa – but most hate anyone getting in the way of the brothers bond – which is understandable since the whole thing revolves around that. Kripke didn't really tie up everything neatly either.

Why do I think Bobby? Because these guys love shafting us – and don't get me wrong, I love Bobby, but that's exactly why they'd gank him…or Castiel for that matter, because we love them. Cas would be less of a shock in as much as – he's been ganked how many times? Most of them by Raphael or Lucifer. It's hard to understand how anyone can kill off a great character – but remember, the show is Sam and Dean.

I had a thought the other day about the scenario of Sam and Ruby and Cas telling Dean to stop it and maybe I'm just slow on the up take – but that was designed to create a rift between them and to drive Sam toward his 'now defunct, destiny'. How could they ever want Sam to stop drinking demon blood when that was their endgame. No doubt Castiel's little torture trip to heaven was because he'd realised that fact and was about to try and fuse them together with that truth. Seems to me the Angel clan are more deceitful than demons!

  10. sooze says:

I think that Cass had something to do with Sam coming back. Maybe he gathered his soul up.But why he was back soulles, I don;t know.

  11. Laurie F says:

Frankly, my big fear is that everything won't connect. Some of the story lines feel dropped because the fans disliked them, like the Campbell clan.

I think Sera Gamble floated several storylines, and parred them off as the unpopular ones manifested through the season. That is why, in my opinion, the season seems so disjointed.

I think certain episodes were great, but the whole myth-arc will be patched together only on second thought as the final 3 episodes try to sum it all up. But I predict it will not feel like the arc was there from the very beginning, but only explained almost as ret-con.

  12. Laurie F says:

One thing confuses me very much. They said there would be much more Castiel, especially in the latter half, but he was barely in any episodes all year. Just the one episode 20 doesn't make it "more". But I am eager to finally learn what he is up to.

I predict God resurrects Rachel in the same way he did Castiel in the past, to deal with the wayward dude. To chastise, not smite, I hope.

  13. Jess says:

Sera Gamble requested viewers opinions on what they wanted to see evolve in the storyline.  All the statements were directed at Cass and were depressively negative. The derogatory opinions about Castiel being " boring?!"and that they just wanted the boys without the angels, caused me angst. I feel that "the heaven arc entity" amplified the longevity of the supernatural concept. Other programs have fallen to the wayside with mediocrity but the supernatural concept has cemented intrigue thanks to the "angelic introduction". I would have liked to have said all this earlier but they closed their reply time prematurely

    • Dara says:

Jess @ 7.34, it seems to me that the cadre of Cas haters got to answer Gamble's questions, then. Cas is hugely popular outside of that group. I agree with you about the angelic arc. And Cas of course is such a great addition to the cast.

  14. Jackie says:

I've never heard negative comments really about Cas. I thought it was a given he was hugely popular. I guess there must be a small group that are on a crusade to get rid of him. I think Sera Gamble must know how popular he is with the majority though. I can no longer imagine the show without him.

  15. jess says:

  16. SaraL says:

I hate to be one of "those" Deangirls but if we can only scrounge up one question out of 15 for Dean, it's pretty telling how little actual story he has been given this year.

I hope to see some pay off for Death's tasking him with being the intrepid detective, but I suspect that was just a throwaway line to keep dean fans hanging on for the rest of the season. But I sincerely doubt there will be any follow-through since that seems to be the pattern on this show where this character is concerned.

    • Julie says:

      I agree here.

It was released a few days ago that Sera said that, and I paraphrase, in the 2 hour finale, the first hour will wrap up Dean's arc and the 2nd will be about Sam's arc. I sat and stared and said to the blinking computer screen, "WHAT Dean arc?!"

She explained that it was about the lack of faith he has in himself to have the one thing he's wanted most, a family.

Well, Ms. Gamble, if you have to TELL fans what Dean's arc was, then it was a poorly designed arc and really, non-existent. We saw Dean's attempts to be a parent to Ben and a father to Lisa for all of, what? Three episodes? Maybe three and a-half? Then poof, it was gone and forgotten and really, it didn't seem to reach across the season, just sort of hand-waved at by the writers because in truth, I think even they forgot about Dean and any real storyline he was supposed to have.

I'm guessing that Sam's soul issue, widely bandied about all season long, and how souls in general are at issue, will be Dean's only real issue. I'm hoping that Dean, possessing a soul powerful enough to house an archangel, might have more of an impact. That maybe Castiel isn't involving the boys in his dealings early because he's hoping he won't have to use Dean's soul to win his battle in Heaven. And I'm hoping that Sam's soul is just too fragile and that we'll finally get a finale wherein Dean's impact concludes the arc of this season. I might then feel less bereft at how poorly they've utilized Dean's character. I'd love to see Castiel betray the boys in this way, knowing it's the only way to win the all-important war in Heaven.

I'm seeing Castiel become more like Sam from season 4; paralleling Sam's decision to do what he thought was best for the greater good even if it hurt those closest to him. Like Sam, Castiel's intentions are good but of course, the road to Hell is paved with them.

  17. anon says:

Those are all very good points and I hope we'll get some answers in the awesome upcoming episodes. I don't think Chuck is God though.

  18. Victoria says:

    You forgot season 4!

    • Clarissa says:

Who forgot season 4?  And in relation to what?

      • Belle says:

LOL, In your main article when you are talking about what each season's main arc is you did not  mention season four. You went from them trying to save Dean to trying to stop Lucifer and left out Lilith.

I don't think it really matters, but I noticed it to.

On the other hand, really good questions and speculations. I'm in complete agreement on the amulet issue. I'm gonna have issues if that stays unanswered.

        • moo says:

Of course she forgot season 4, because the writers have forgotten season 4 and the fact that Dean actually had some relevance to the mytharc for that one glorious year. But since nothing from his role there was ever followed up, it's easily forgetton apparently.

    • Clarissa says:

Oh yes, I see what you mean. Actually, season four is my favorite of all the seasons. I just missed it in the article above.

And yes, I understand the frustration regarding Dean's lack of storyline this season. But, to be fair, I rather thought that season 3 wad focused primarily on Dean and keeping him out of He'll and Sam's storyline was rather bent towards that goal. So I suppose it's only fair that season 6 play out in the opposite.

  19. elena says:

Very nice summary of the outstanding questions, Clarissa. I have to admit, thought, I'm with SaraL – the lack of Dean involvement in any of the arcs aside from a cool assignment from Death that never went anywhere is pretty dang disheartening.  And as for the others….after watching so many episodes focused on Sam's soul issues, I've pretty much OD'd on that particular storyline.  But I'll still be curious to see how the War and Eve arc wrap up. It all feels kind of rushed, though- i wonder if these storylines were originally intended to last 2 seasons. Because tying most of this up in the next four episodes…..well, i don't envy the writers, that's for sure.

  20. Gina says:

    1. What happened to John??? Ash never found him or mary…so are they in heaven? are they alive??? i want to know what happened to them…

    2. are we going to be seeing Adam again ( i dont think the boys will just leave their brother down there. I have a feeling Death will be holding Adam over the boys head if he wants something)

    3. is Ellen and Jo coming back?

  21. Andrea says:

As for the deaths, I wouldn't put my money no Lisa and Ben as it would be a little too much obvious. I may be wrong but I don't believe it. I think they'll be out of the picture (I really can't see a place for them in the story) but most probably by choice. Maybe Lisa decides that she definitely doesn't want a hunter in her an her son's life and leaves for good. Or maybe Dean himself decides it can't be.

Jared said that it doesn't necessarily ends in death, but in a new beginning. I'm intrgued about this "necessarily". What does he mean by that?  I had thought about a sort of Romeo and Juliet ending. Watching Sam die little by little while being unable to stop it can be too much for Dean. What if he decides he wants to die too? Like Ellen an d Jo. We all know they can't stay dead so they would be  brought back somehow. This would provide the "powerful and emotional" ending Kripke promised and the "new begining" suggested by Jared. On the other hand, we are also told that it ends bad for all involved. Does it mean that Sam can't be saved? I confess I'm going nuts.

  22. luisl says:

After episode 20 most of this questions have been answered..

    6×21= question 8

    6×22= questions 5, 6, 7

question 9 power of soul was answered but a little vague

question 12 I think GOd did his part, and i think we aren't going to see him anymore

and the more important question 14 i think it was already answered.
