Every so often an original Supernatural novel comes out. Usually they contain stand-alone cases for the boys to solve. They generally fit into the overall timeline of the show (and there's usually continuity), but they're typically independent stories.
The newest original novel, War of the Sons, written by Rebecca Dessertine and David Reed, will be released on August 31 and I had a chance to read it yesterday.
A Supernatural novel that reveals a previously unseen adventure for the Winchester brothers, from the hit TV series!
Twenty-three years ago, Sam and Dean Winchester lost their mother to a demonic supernatural force. Following the tragedy, their father taught the boys everything about the paranormal evil that lives in the dark corners of America and how to kill it.
On the hunt for Lucifer, the boys find themselves in a small town in South Dakota where they meet Don an angel with a proposition How far will the boys go to uncover the secret Satan never wanted them to find out?
At this point I've read all of the original Supernatural novels and this one was my favorite. What the little description above doesn't tell you (mild spoiler alert) is that the boys go on a search for an ancient relic - a portion of the Dead Sea scrolls) that would help them defeat Lucifer (spoiler over).
Taking place after the episode "My Bloody Valentine" in season 5, the story actually fits in nicely with the overall mythology of the season. The characters (primarily Sam and Dean) act like you would expect after the events of season 5 up until that point. I don't know if it's because this story fit in the most with the seasons 4 and 5 mythology that appealed to me so much, or whether it's the latent Catholic inside me that's always fascinated by the hunt for religious relics, but I liked this book. The book moves along at a quick pace and a few interesting original characters are introduced. The way it ends, you could see this fitting in with the overall season 5 storyline.
You can read the prologue of this novel here.
The publisher has provided three copies of this book (along with three copies of the Official Companion Guide for Season 4) to give away. Read about our contest here.
