TheCW Confirms - Supernatural Returning to Season One Structure

Expect the unexpected on this season of Supernatural, but according to TheCW head Dawn Ostroff the series is returning to its roots. As the each season of Supernatural has passed, the show has risen the stakes when it comes to the overarching stories - partly by design. The race up to the Apocalypse was meant to lead to a controlled end of the Supernatural story. When it comes to discussing the sixth season of Supernatural the question most often asked is "How do you follow the Apocalypse?". Ostroff knows how.

At TheCW's TCA gathering, Ostroff told reporters "I don't know if you saw the show in the first season, but it was pretty much they were hunting something different every single week, and they're going to go back to that format. The one twist aside from the guy's personalities kind of changing a bit is that their mother's side of the family is going to turn out to be hunters also, and so there'll be some storyline involving their mom's side of the family. I think we're all feeling really enthusiastic about 'Supernatural.' Everybody on the show still feels that there's a lot of juice left in the characters, and we hope it goes on for more seasons, for sure."

That last bit will certainly be of interest to Supernatural fans. Creator Eric Kripke originally intended to end with season 5, but wound up feeling there was still more fuel in the Supernatural story engine. Still, seasons beyond 6 will depend on numerous factors; not the least of which being the fact that Supernatural's leads, Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles who play Sam and Dean respectively, are only under contract until the end of season 6. Still, if Supernatural continues to pump out the ratings TheCW has become accustomed to the bean counters at the network might be more generous in working out a deal for the dynamic duo - the question then is whether they will be interested in doing more Supernatural.
