DVD Review - An Idiot Abroad

Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant are comedy gods. I'm not just saying that because they revolutionized sitcoms with their series The Office, though that is a big part of it. No, most of my love from Ricky and Stephen comes from what they didn't write, but what they found. Who they found. I'm talking about Karl Pilkington, of course, the star of An Idiot Abroad.

There's a context to An Idiot Abroad that exists outside of the show. Gervais and Merchant first met Pilkington when he worked as a producer on their radio show, and they quickly discovered his incredible humor. Of course, he's not intentionally funny. You're not laughing with Karl when he says something ignorant in a very naive way. You're laughing at him, along with Ricky and Stephen. Karl doesn't seem to mind much, though; there's the sense of a very close friendship between him and the other two, despite the fact that they're constantly poking fun at the way he thinks. That's what keeps An Idiot Abroad from being mean-sprited. Ricky and Stephen genuinely like Karl (and he them), and they also find him insanely funny.

An Idiot Abroad, which hit DVD January 10, sees them send Karl around the world to see the seven wonders of the world. Along the way, he runs into situations that make him truly uncomfortable (some planned by Gervais and Merchant, who are really only present in the series via telephone). The fun of the series is seeing how nonchalantly Karl reacts to things that many people dream of seeing. He's mostly annoyed by having to go see the world.

"I hated it," he admits in the show's prologue.

"That was sort of the point," Gervais responds, grinning. "I was hoping for that."

An Idiot Abroad is the perfect antithesis to the trite, enthusiastic documentaries you usually see about the modern world. This series leads us to appreciate the wonders of the world because Karl doesn't, but it's also easy to sympathize with Karl's incessant desire to just go home. Fans of both comedies and documentaries will absolutely love this series.

The two-disc set includes the preview episode in which Gervais and Merchant explain their motivations, some deleted scenes from the show, and a photo gallery of Karl's travels. An Idiot Abroad 2: The Bucket List will likely hit DVD within a year as well.

DVD Review - Mystery Science Theater 3000: Volume XXII

Mystery Science Theater 3000 is really sort of a staple of geek culture. Even those who haven't seen the show have heard of it, and those who have seen it love it. It blends smart-ass comments with terrible B-movies to create something truly golden. Well, most of the time. Like every series, MST3K does have some occasional clunkers for episodes. With Volume XXII fresh onto DVD shelves, you're probably wondering if the set is worth the purchase. In short, it is.

This release features four MST3K episodes, taken from various seasons of the show's run. "Mighty Jack" and "Time of the Apes" both come from the show's third season, while "The Violent Years" and "The Brute Man" come from seasons 6 and 7, respectively. Thankfully, these are all solid outings.

The best of the set is easily "The Violent Years," in which the characters riff on an Ed Wood movie. Given that Ed Wood might be the most famous bad filmmaker ever, the episode is essentially the characters shooting fish in a barrel -- though sidesplittingly funny nonetheless.

"Time of the Apes" and "Mighty Jack" are declared by box set as "two of the most beloved and most requested episodes" of the series, and they're certainly funny. After all, poorly dubbed Americanized versions of Japanese films have an innate humor to them. MST3K -- especially for "Mighty Jack" -- makes them even funnier.

The set is also pretty crammed with bonus features, including a making-of featurette for "The Brute Man," a making-of featurette for MST3K, amongst others. The set even includes four pretty cool mini-posters (one for each of the films). All in all, it's pretty nifty.

Mystery Science Theater 3000: Volume XXII hit shelves on December 6, but you can order it from Amazon to get it just in time to stuff the stocking of your favorite geek.

Game of Thrones Season One DVD and Blu-ray Details Unveiled

Game of Thrones is coming to DVD and Blu-ray in March. And while that is still quite a long way away, HBO has already unveiled the cover art for both the Blu-ray and DVD sets. As you probably expected, it looks awesome.

The set, which hits shelves on March 6 in the US, features five discs full of Game of Thrones, including, of course, all ten episodes from the show's first season. And while the DVD box art simply features that image of Ned Stark sitting on the Iron Throne, the Blu-ray cover art features an intricate pattern to frame it. The 'Episode Guide' insert also happens to feature family trees for some of the important houses, including House Stark, House Baratheon, House Lannister, and House Targaryen. You can check out an image of both packagings above, but there are also some special features to contend with.

The Blu-ray set will include a "Complete Guide to Westeros," the "Anatomy of an Episode," "In-Episode Guides," and something called "Hidden Dragon Eggs" (I have no idea what this is, but it sounds exciting).

Both sets will include "Making Game of Thrones," "Creating the Show Open" (whatever that means), "From the Book to the Screen," "Character Profiles," "The Night's Watch," "Creating the Dothraki Language," and audio commentaries from David Benioff, D.B. Weiss, George R.R. Martin, Emilie Clarke, Peter Dinklage, and Kit Harrington.

More details about these special features are slated to be released later. Want a closer look at the Game of Thrones packaging? Simply click over to the next page for a much larger look.

You can catch more Game of Thrones news here, including a glimpse at the making of season 2 and a look at the new cast members joining for the show's second season.

Game of Thrones season 2 will premiere on HBO in April 2012.

Blu-ray Review - Doctor Who: The Complete Sixth Series

Doctor Who series 6 was, as a whole, the strongest season of the series since it returned to television in 2005. Sure, there were a few duds (see: "The Rebel Flesh/The Almost People," "Night Terrors), but overall the series featured some of the Doctor's greatest outings. And, in a move that was controversial with many fans, the season was given a greater mythological arc, with a future version of the Doctor being killed in the very first episode and the true circumstances of his death not being revealed until the season finale.

Doctor Who: The Complete Sixth Series hits DVD and Blu-ray on November 22. The set contains not only the thirteen episodes of the sixth series, but the 2010 Christmas special, "A Christmas Carol," and a multitude of special features.

The set is packaged in a strikingly shiny case, with a strikingly simple cover (pictured above right). It's a much simpler cover than the busier holographics of the series 5 box set, and that definitely works to the set's advantage.

The set contains plenty of special features. Disc 1 features not only "A Christmas Carol" but the corresponding episode of Doctor Who Confidential. Comic Relief specials "Space" and "Time," in which the TARDIS lands inside the TARDIS, are also included on the disc.

Commentaries for "The Impossible Astronaut," "The Doctor's Wife," "The Rebel Flesh," "A Good Man Goes to War," and "The Wedding of River Song" are included in the set, as are 'Monster Files' featurettes for the Silence, the Gangers, the Anti-Bodies, and the Cybermats. Disc 6 features all thirteen episodes of Doctor Who Confidential's final season as well.

But the big unseen feature of this set are the five "Night and the Doctor" mini-sodes. These are the hidden gems of the set. "Bad Night" is the first of these, which chronicles what exactly happens when Amy answers the TARDIS phone when the Doctor's not around. "Good Night" is a much better outing, featuring the Doctor and Amy having a heart-to-heart about the saddest moment of her life. "First Night" and "Last Night" form a pretty poignant two-part minisode, in which there are several River Songs on the TARDIS at one time. While the first episode is comedic, the second episode has a bit of poignancy -- and also a bit of a hint for River Song's future. The final of the five specials, "Up All Night," doesn't feature the Doctor at all -- it features Craig (James Corden) and Sophie (Daisy Haggard) having a conversation about baby Alfie the night before "Closing Time" begins. It's a fun, if inessential, little episode.

All in all, any fan of Doctor Who would enjoy seeing The Complete Sixth Series under their Christmas tree. It's a well-packaged set teeming with special features that even the most well-versed Whovian can enjoy. You can get the DVD on Amazon here, and on Blu-ray here.

DVD Review - Garrow's Law, Series 2

If there's a great British show that you're not watching, it's Garrow's Law. The show, which premiered on the BBC in 2009, is one of Acorn Media's best titles, alongside the genius Life on Mars and Single-Handed. The series has the unique conceit of being a legal drama set in the late 18th century, and centers upon barrister William Garrow, a real historical figure who coined the term "innocent until proven guilty." The series portrays Garrow as a legal revolutionary who begins to change the way trials are held in England through his new perspective and practice of persuading juries. The second series of the show arrives on DVD from Acorn Media August 2.

Click here for my review of Garrow's Law, Series 1.

To call the series anything but great would be wrong. It's deliberately paced, with both the procedural element and an overarching storyline at perfect balance within each episode. The thread that runs through the entirety of the season, which shows Garrow accused of 'criminal conversation' with another man's wife (Lady Sarah Hill, pictured on the cover alongside Garrow), builds to an emotionally satisfying conclusion at the end of the series. It's a perfectly executed build-up filled with tension, and the resolution just might have you cheering. Series 2, which consists of four episodes, is well worth the money -- though of course you'll want to enjoy series 1 first.

It's a brilliant series that features some superb acting (from Andrew Buchan as Garrow, primarily), great plotting, and if you've not seen it before, you certainly should.

Garrow's Law has been renewed for a third series, which should premiere on the BBC later this year.

The Vampire Diaries Season 2 DVD Details

Yesterday Clarissa revealed the DVD details for Supernatural season 6, and because we are just as big fans of the another The CW show that has a core relationship between brothers at the heart, we thought we would share the details of The Vampire Diaries season 2 DVD set. The date that was given on our big list of DVD releases (that can be found here) of August 30, has been confirmed by those lovely folks at TV Shows On DVD who also have details of what can be found along with the 22 episodes of season 2. Here is what you can expect:

Release date: August 30, 2011

Official Description: They're back - and they're not alone. In Season 2, Elena, Stefan, Damon and the other residents of Mystic Falls are joined by a sinister new breed. Released from the tomb, Katherine unleashes her personal brand of evil in a diabolical plot. The Originals - the world's oldest and most dangerous vampires - hunt for Elena, who discovers she has a terrifying connection to their world. And now vampires aren't the only monsters in town. On moonlit nights, werewolves roam in search of victims…including vampires, who succumb to a single werewolf bite.

Cost: $59.98 SRP for a 6-DVD set; $69.97 SRP for the 4-BD high-def version

Special Features (known at this point and subject to change):

Pages of the Wolf: Three Featurettes - The Myth & The Mystery (Werewolf Lore), Building the Beasts (Working with Actual and Mechanical Wolves) and Howling at the Moon (Michael Trevino's Transformative Makeup Process)

Her Own Worst Enemy…Elena, Katherine and Nina!: Nina Dobrev Rises to the Challenge of Playing Two Roles

The Perfect Love Triangle: Vampires, Werewolves, Witches: Setting the Record Straight on Who's Nibbling on Whom for the First Two Seasons

Unaired Scenes

Audio Commentary on "Masquerade" With Executive Producers Kevin Williamson & Julie Plec

Second Bite AKA Gag Reel

Blu-ray only: A digital copy of all 22 episodes

Note: this looks set as the official cover art for the boxset but it is also subject to change (thanks to vampire-diaries.net and @ShiraRose1 for the heads up)

Overall it looks like a great set, with wide range of features to compliment the 22 episodes, though whilst I am happy to see that there is a commentary track from Kevin Williamson and Julie Plec is too greedy to ask for more? As a self confessed commentary junkie (yep I'm a giant nerd) it would be brilliant to have some tracks that feature some of the cast with the creative forces of the show and hopefully this is something that they will do in the future. I'm glad to see the inclusion of the gag reel once again as this is another DVD special feature that I am fond of, cue more flubbed lines, swearing, falling over, provocative bottle holding and gum disposal. There is a good collection of other behind the scenes sneaks here and it's good to see that there is one focusing on Nina Dobrev and her extended performance this season as both Elena and Katherine. Is there anything missing from the list above that you would like to see included on this season 2 DVD?

Want to preorder a copy of The Vampire Diaires season 2 from Amazon (which is currently cheaper than the official price!)? Order the DVD here and the Blu-ray here.

The music was enchanting, but the videos were even more enchanting: they were completely computer animated. That might not seem interesting enough except that it was made in 1991. This was very early-stage computer animation, but it was powerful enough to shape the way I dream. That was, for a long time, the standard I held most animation to. Sure, it's been surpassed, but it's still a brilliant work of art.

ReBoot came three years later, in 1994. It isn't a show terribly far removed from shows that you'll see in the Saturday morning block of today's children's television. It might even be a little bit better, as far as storylines go. You'll just have to get over the animation.

ReBoot, which hits DVD on March 1, is animated in the same way that Beyond the Mind's Eye was, except unlike Beyond the Mind's Eye, the animation isn't exactly of a high quality. It's in fact quite bad -- in watching it, there were times where I just couldn't tell what was going on. The characters themselves are well animated, but their environments seem to suck them in. The animation has no depth. I can respect what the filmmakers were doing when they made the series, but by today's standards, it's awful.

The story, however, is quite good. The series takes place in the electronic city called Mainframe, apparently set inside a gaming console. The inhabitants of the city don't do much other than play the games that the User plugs in - or fight the deadly viruses trying to take over the system. These villains, with absolutely no moral ambiguity, are given techno names like Hexadecimal and Megabyte, and while Megabyte is the over-the-top British-accented baddie that you would expect, Hexadecimal is actually quite magnetically crazy, and is undoubtedly the best part of the series.

The four-disc set is pretty well done, with nicely done menus and audio commentaries. This set only covers the first half of the show's run, so I expect to see a second set coming from Shout! Factory soon.

I'm going to go ahead and predict that most people who purchase ReBoot are going to be doing so for the nostalgic element: maybe they watched the series back when it aired in the early nineties. Of course, there will be difficulty in recruiting new viewers, simply because ReBoot aired so long ago. But, speaking as someone who was recently (but not too recently) a ten-year-old boy, I have to say that ten-year-old boys will love this show. I would have loved it had I watched it. It's definitely not the worst thing you could buy your kids.

ReBoot: Seasons 1 & 2 hits DVD on March 1. You can pre-order it on Amazon for $20.99.

DVD Review - Bill Moyers: In Search of the Constitution

Of the two Bill Moyers DVD sets I've reviewed today, I will admit that my favorite was A World of Ideas - Writers. Don't let that cheapen In Search of the Constitution, though. The four-disc set certainly isn't a bad one, and is quite engrossing. There are only a few little snags that keep it from being as good as Writers.

While Writers was essentially timeless in that it dealt with mostly philosophy, In Search of the Constitution finds itself in the ever-changing field of politics. Seeing as the series was filmed around twenty years ago, there's obviously somewhat of a gap left between what Moyers and his interviewees discuss and what is going on in the nation today. Whenever Moyers and his interviewees discuss just how far our current government has strayed from the Constitution, it's hard to remember that they're talking about the Reagan- and Bush-era government. Whether or not it applies today is moot; there's not a lot of room for current audiences to agree or disagree with these statements (Perhaps that's why the set includes "Updates on the Participants" on every disc as a bonus feature).

However, when it turns its eye to history, In Search of the Constitution is quite good. There are long discussions about the Founding Fathers, who I personally enjoy learning about. There are a lot of historians discussing the Constitutional Convention, and though the camera only shifts between their face and Moyers's, it's pretty gripping stuff.

The four-disc-set contains eleven episodes, as well as a nice little booklet about the set. Is it worth the money? Well, that depends on just how much you like learning about the government. If you're a history junkie like myself, you'll probably love it. If not, maybe A World of Ideas - Writers is best for you.

DVD Review - Garrow's Law, Series 1

Sometimes the most exciting settings of television lie not in the future, but in the past.

You hardly see the eighteenth century portrayed on television anymore. That's a shame, because some of history's most exciting times happened in that time period. Many of these events have been overshadowed by the importance of the American revolution, but perhaps one figure that was overlooked was William Garrow, a barrister who changed the face of the British legal system permanently.

That's where Garrow's Law comes in. The British series, which just saw the release of its first series on U.S. DVD Tuesday, is certainly one of the most engrossing shows I've gotten from Acorn Media. The four hour-long episodes are quite engrossing, both in the trials themselves and the fascinatingly hot-headed Garrow, who is a genius when he's not shooting himself in the foot.

The supporting cast are all brilliant as well; Alun Armstrong plays Garrow's friend and advisor John Southouse, while Lyndsey Marshal (Cleopatra on HBO's Rome, Lucy on Being Human) plays Lady Sarah Hill, Garrow's contact within the social aristocracy of British politics. The most magnetic figure, though, is Aiden McArdle's Silvester, Garrow's nemesis who often steals the scene from Garrow himself.

The episodes follow a format of a shorter case at the beginning (usually a loss on Garrow's part), and then a longer, more dramatic case (usually a victory) for the later three-quarters of the episode. Strangely enough, though, this doesn't detract from the series. Perhaps it's the lesser number of episodes, but each case seems fresh and new. There's a good variety of cases dealing with various aspects of the law, and watching Garrow work them out is just as entertaining as watching the cases themselves play out.

The two-disc set, released by the great Acorn Media, features all four episodes of he show's first season on BBC One. Bonus features such as a behind-the-scenes featurette (a rarity for such releases), as well as on-screen cast filmographies, a biography of the real-life William Garrow, and a photo gallery from the show.

Here’s what I think is the problem with Glee: it’s the most tonally-challenged show on television. It’s not really sure what it wants to be. Sometimes it’s a comedy, other times it’s a drama, other times it’s a public service message, but it’s always a musical show.

The fact is that the show doesn’t always know how to blend all of these different aspects together as successfully as other shows are able to do, and when it picks which aspects to feature in a given episode, it has a tendency to go overboard. There are also times, such as with the Rocky Horror Picture Show episode, that it has a tendency to have no story at all throughout the episode (or have the most ridiculous storyline), thus rendering everything between the individual performances (as spectacular as they are) somewhat pointless.

I like Glee. I watch it every week, even though I’ve been disappointed many times, particularly during its second season. I actually really liked the season 2 premiere episode, with its funny documentary-style opening sequence and the introduction of Charice as a rival to Rachel. Then frustrations set in. Mr. Shue’s character seems to act differently in each episode. I thought the Britney Spears episode was terrible and was frustrated that such a terrific character like Brittany got featured in an episode that did nothing to showcase why she’s such a hilarious character.

Despite this, there are bright moments in season 2. I love John Stamos and his character, and seeing him perform in the Rocky Horror episode was a treat. I adore the addition of Darren Criss as Blaine. I find that he’s incredibly talented as a singer and I love his interactions with Kurt. And I didn’t hate all of the episodes. I particularly liked the episode “Furt”, where Kurt’s father and Finn’s mother got married. I found that episode to be a nice blend of comedy and heart.

Glee needs to figure out how to bring consistency to its storylines and characters before frustrations mount. All of the pieces are right there at its fingertips. It has an incredibly talented cast that brought on some great new characters in its second season. It has a great deal of popularity, but not a lot of goodwill. My hope is that it can turn itself around and remind me why I fell in love with it in the first place.

DVD Special Features

I think the DVD boxset for Glee Season 2: Volume 1 is great. The "Glee Music Jukebox" on each disc allows you to view only the musical numbers for each episode. There’s also a behind the scenes look at the making of the Rocky Horror episode, with interviews with various cast members and producers. That particular disc also has a bonus Rocky Horror song: “Planet, Schmanet, Janet”.

The “Getting Waxed with Jane Lynch” shows the cool process that Madame Tussauds went through to create a wax sculpture of her character. The “Wit of Brittany” is a cute featurette that just features Brittany’s best lines. Finally, there’s a 15 minute compilation of the Glee panel at Comic Con 2010.

Bottom Line

Glee could be better, but even when it’s not great, it’s still a terrific musical show. True Glee fans will want to get their hands on this DVD set for the performances alone.

The man named Ricky Gervais is appearing on Piers Morgan Tonight tonight (Thursday night). He just finished up hosting what is perhaps the most talked-about Golden Globes ever (and all thanks to his sharp and offensive wit), The Ricky Gervais Show just started its second season on HBO, and he's even slated to make a cameo appearance in the U.S. version of the show he created, The Office.

Busy man, eh?

Well, despite his ubiquity, Ricky Gervais is a really funny guy. There's nowhere that's more apparent than the Ricky Gervais Show, which I previously reviewed on DVD here. For those of you unaware of the show, which hit DVD back on January 4, here's a synopsis from Warner Bros, who released the set:

From the creators of the smash-hit series The Office and Extras and based on the original record-breaking podcasts, comes the new animated comedy series, The Ricky Gervais Show. The series is an animated version of the original podcasts that earned a spot in the Guinness Book of World Records for the most downloads. It is voiced by Ricky Gervais, Stephen Merchant, and colleague and friend Karl Pilkington whose offbeat musings inspire many of the storylines which include the merits of 20th century inventions; Karl's suggestion for population control; how philosophy has evolved through the ages and not forgetting Karl's perfectly round head!

While we've also got a giveaway going for What I Like About You, we figured you guys wouldn't say no to two giveaways in one week. We'll be mixing things up a bit as well. To do to enter to win a copy of the DVD, make the following post on Twitter:

I'm following @TVOvermind for a chance to win a copy of The Ricky Gervais Show S1 on DVD. http://bit.ly/fC7hol

Make that post sometime between now and January 27 at 1pm EST and you'll automatically be entered. The winner of the set will be chosen randomly.

DVD Review - Man in a Suitcase, Set 1

Man in a Suitcase's "Mac" McGill is the off-brand James Bond. Where Bond has a smooth swagger, McGill has an awkward stride that resembles most accurately Gru from Despicable Me. His dialogue delivery is forced (not to mention entirely cheeseball), and he takes himself way too seriously, despite his constant inferiority to the episodes' antagonists, who continually blackmail, threaten, (and in one episode, brainwash) him. If Man in a Suitcase didn't try to market him as being someone as suave as James Bond, that'd all be fine.

The show itself isn't bad, though, believe it or not. It deserves points for casting an American in the main role as McGill, despite being a British show. The fact that the show at least attempts to show American perceptions of Britain makes it interesting in that regard, though that aspect receives very little screen time.

The show also has hints of its contemporary, The Prisoner, bleeding through. In the first episode, McGill is captured by a deposed African king and subjected to copious amounts of brainwashing. While McGill spends most of the episode stumbling around in a stupor, it's fun to watch the tactics used by his captors to crack him. "I'm going to shoot you, McGill," one character repeats, over and over, and it actually becomes a little scary.

The stories themselves are also solid; as typical of 1960s television, it's all standalone. But the stories remain fresh and each of the fifteen included episodes brings a drastically different story, which is of course a good thing. "Variety is the spice of life," is a very true expression, and thankfully, the show understands that.

In most respects, Man in a Suitcase is a success. It's not a bad show at all -- the lead actor just doesn't feel right. If you can stomach him, the rest of the series is entertaining, if not downright fun.

This four-disc set is released in the same, bare-bones format as other Acorn Media titles, which serves the show's purpose adequately. Acorn will be releasing this title on January 25, and it might be worth a try. You can order the set on Amazon for $44.99.

Set 2 of the series, which contains the last fifteen episodes, is expected sometime in the future.

That's doubly so with a show like ER: it has its fans, and it has its detractors. Those are pretty much set in stone, and doubly so if you buy the DVDs. If you have seasons 1-13, of course you're going to want to buy the fourteenth season when it hits DVD shelves on January 11. But if you don't have any of the sets, season fourteen doesn't seem like the prime place to start.

Despite that, though, ER's fourteenth season is surprisingly decent. While most shows have long been running on fumes by the time year fourteen rolls around, ER at least has a pulse throughout the season, even if it is slightly weak. The season, slightly shortened by that infamous writers strike, was originally slated to be the final season of the series, and you can sort of feel that finality throughout early episodes of the season. The show still feels like a typical procedural, though there are some pretty cool cases. After all, Steve Buscemi (Boardwalk Empire) guest stars in the season finale! (And who doesn't love Steve Buscemi?)

Some of the episodes, though, do feel like pure filler: episode four of the season features and entire plot line of a cosmetologist patient pampering the staff. The conflicts between the staff members feel a little too melodramatic at times. It'd be wrong to say that the show isn't showing its age at this point, but the fact that the next season is the last certainly helps the mindset one would have going into the season. It really all boils down to whether you like ER.

The set itself is nice, though nothing fancy. The nineteen episodes are contained over five discs, all put together in a standard DVD case with a nice little slipcase. As far as the special features go, we get the standard deleted scenes and gag reel. There's also a tribute to the show's three-hundredth episode filmed at the Paley Center for Media.

ER: The Complete Fourteenth Season will be released on January 11, 2011. You can order it on Amazon for $34.99.

DVD Review - Enemy at the Door, Series 2

Perhaps it's my unconditional love for Quentin Tarantino's most recent epic, but I found a lot reminiscent of Inglourious Basterds when I watched Enemy at the Door. Of course, it's the other way around -- the ITV drama outdates Basterds by a good three decades. But Tarantino fans will get a kick out of the subdued tension that permeates through much of Enemy at the Door, which is also set in World War II.

As of this writing, I had not seen series one of the drama, leaving me quite confused with the season opener, "Call of the Dead." That's quite possibly a good thing for those who have seen the first series, though -- there isn't any talking down to the audience. So much of today's television is spent on catch-ups that it takes a good ten minutes for the story to continue; with this series, viewers either know the story or they don't, and the show doesn't pander -- it just goes right along with the story. I can respect that in a show, even though it completely confuses me.

The show has a very theatrical feeling to it, and I mean that in the old sense of the word -- it seems like a play presented on theater. It fits exactly with the tone set by previous old British television shows -- you could almost picture yourself in an audience looking upon a stage while watching it. Though the overall arc of the story is unknown, it's also fun to watch tensions develop between characters -- the rivalry between Major Richter and Hauptmann Reinicke is indeed compelling, especially considering both are on the side of the Germans.

The set itself is typical Acorn Media fare, as is to be expected. It's a single DVD case packed with four DVDs, each with a couple of episodes on them. The first disc even includes an on-screen, nine-page "Historical Background" on the occupation of the Channel Islands (where the series takes place) by the Nazis. It's more than some sets, but still only a footnote for the set, which is all about the series.

Enemy at the Door is an engrossing drama, and it is certainly one that fans of talk-heavy war films like Inglourious Basterds will absolutely love. You'll be lost without the first series (I was), but you'll be able to enjoy the second series on its own merits without it.

Enemy at the Door, Series 2 will hit DVD shelves on January 4, 2011. Order the set here.

That's all thanks to Acorn Media, who is releasing the shows The Guilty and Dirty Tricks on DVD on the same day. The shows both feature protagonists who are ultimately horrible people. The Guilty's Steven Vey and Dirty Tricks's nameless protagonist are both simply awful people who do terrible things for money. The only difference? Dirty Tricks is funny.

The show struck me immediately as being similar to Desperate Housewives, though from a male perspective and much more focused. The show stars Doc Martin's Martin Clunes as an unsuccessful Oxford graduate teacher who becomes friends with a rich couple. This friendship becomes incredibly different when he begins having an affair with the wife, Karen (Lindsay Duncan). Soon, both Karen and her husband meet sudden - and Our Hero claims accidental - demises. But is he telling the truth? As he flees from the law that has accused him of murder, the protagonist recounts his tale in a cheeky story.

The miniseries, which lasts about two and a half hours, is a quick watch and is a lot of fun. I didn't expect to enjoy it going into it, but found its zaniness - and Clunes' absolutely fantastic performance - too engrossing. It does lose steam in the second of the two episodes, though thankfully, when it wraps up, it has a satisfying end reminiscent of Guy Ritchie's turn of the century gangster flicks.

The cast is all wonderful, and Clunes has to work hard to make sure the supporting cast doesn't completely steal the show. Two characters - a little girl and a South American immigrant - are the best thing about the show, and their sporadic appearances are absolutely fantastic, adding variety to a series could have really only focused on its two leads. These characters pop up a lot as the series goes through its breakneck pace, and add a bit of that "sharply comic edge" that The Mirror raves about on the cover of the case.

You can't really call the DVD a set, because it's the first item from Acorn Media I've received that only has one disc. The set, like all releases by Acorn, doesn't have many bells and whistles in the packaging. It's a simple case with the DVD in it. Special features are scarce, too: it has a handful of on-screen biographies/filmographies of the cast the director. Even those are only words displayed on the screen -- the only video the set has is the show. And that's okay, because the show is entertaining enough to carry the whole set.

Dirty Tricks will arrive on January 4, 2011, alongside fellow Acorn offerings such as The Guilty and Enemy at the Door, Series 2 (both of which have been reviewed on TVOvermind as well). You can order the series on Amazon for $26.99.

DVD Review - The Guilty

The Guilty is what Shakespeare would have written if the Bard had written for British television. The 1992 miniseries, starring Foyle's War's Michael Kitchen, is a tour-de-force of television. It's gripping from beginning to end. It was so gripping, in fact, that I deprived myself of precious sleep in order to finish watching it all the way through (I'm still depriving myself of sleep, even now, because I'm so enthusiastic to write this review).

I didn't expect much upon receiving my copy of the series. The packaging isn't quite noticeable at all. In fact, it's rather plain: the only real color in the image comes from Michael Kitchen's stern eyes. The rest is faded black and white, providing a very bleak image that might put off those who aren't familiar with the miniseries (or those who haven't at least seen the 2000 film adaptation starring Bill Pullman). However, the austere palette only goes to prove one thing: never judge a DVD by its cover. While it is quite bleak, The Guilty is anything but black-and-white. It's vibrant, full of color, and absolutely lives up to the review emblazoned across the top of the cover: it's a "terrific psychological thriller" in every sense of the word.

Now, the DVD set itself is very barebones. The only special features are subtitles; the two discs contain roughly around 100 minutes each of the 200 minute series, and that's about it. A recap of the first disc appears on the second, but if you watch it all in one sitting like I did (something that was surprisingly difficult to resist), that feature will be worth it. You'll be all about the show for three-and-a-half hours straight. A recap only throws a wrench in the works.

The premise of the show, much like the show itself, is dark. Steven Vey, an ambitious and successful barrister is on the verge of becoming a judge -- a giant career move -- when he drunkenly rapes his secretary. Meanwhile, Eddie Doyle, the son Vey never knew he had, comes to London to reconnect with his father and ends up falling in love with the secretary, Nicky -- right as she attempts to blackmail the father he is trying to reconnect to. Disaster results.

Who the show really has fun with is the audience, successfully stringing them along for three white-knuckled hours of suspense. It's the kind of show that makes you bite your nails and shout at the television. It's impossible to predict how the series will end until it does, and when it does, you'll be left satisfied. Surprised, and satisfied. And really, what more could you ask from a show?

The Guilty will be available on DVD January 4. It's part of Acorn's first batch of 2011 titles, which includes the Martin Clunes comedy Dirty Tricks and Enemy at the Door, Series 2. You can find reviews of these other two titles, also at TVOvermind.

That's when season one of The Walking Dead will be released.

The season, which wrapped with its sixth episode tonight, has been one of cable television's most well-received; it broke records for AMC, and was surprisingly able to hold onto (and even improve upon) its ratings. Last week's episode, "Wildfire," still holds a top ten spot on iTunes. (All five available episodes of the series are in the top 30). The show's been a massive hit.

Perhaps because of that, AMC has already locked a release date onto the DVD set of its most-watched series. While the dismally rated Rubicon still hasn't attained a release date, the zombie drama has been hammed into a spot at March 8, 2011. That's a little over three months from now. In the world of TV to DVD, that's incredibly quick. Even Mad Men's fourth season, which ended it's run two weeks before The Walking Dead premiered, isn't slated to appear on DVD until later that month.

The Walking Dead will return in October 2011 for season two, according to the most recent reports.

It was so drastically different from past seasons that it was incredibly hard to pin down my opinion on the show. The show became a radical new beast with every episode, and I'm still not sure what the show will be like when it returns next year for its fifth season. But by the time the fifth season rolls around, I should have one reason to be more film on my opinion of season four: the DVD will have hit.

TVShowsOnDVD has posted that Mad Men season four will be hitting DVD and Blu-Ray on March 22, which is right around the same time of year that season three hit shelves. Art has yet to be revealed -- in fact, no technical details about the set have been revealed at all. Well, save one: the price. We do know that Amazon is allowing pre-orders of the set for $32.49 for DVD and $34.99 for Blu-ray. Not a bad deal at all, is it?

While you eagerly await next summer for the fifth (and possibly final) season of Mad Men, you can keep Draper's memory alive by pre-ordering the recently departed season.
