The End Is Nigh: When Should TV Shows Plot Their Own Demise?

On Sunday, it was announced that Breaking Bad would be wrapping up sixteen episodes after its fourth season finale. It made sense; the journey of Walter White had to eventually end. As an almost Shakespearean tragedy of a good man's downfall into evil, the series couldn't risk stagnating without losing dramatic poignancy. An end date ensured that the series would go out on the top of its game, as a cohesive work of fiction that tells a full story. The thing about end dates is that they give a show a beginning and a middle, too.

But end dates are commonplace for cable TV. Successful shows on cable networks get to plot their own demises years in advance. Neil Gaiman's upcoming series American Gods on HBO already has decided it will run for six seasons, while AMC's Mad Men is scheduled to end after three more seasons. Rescue Me will air its final episode in September, a few years after FX announced that the show would end after its seventh season.

Few shows on network television have the same privileges. Think about it: in recent memory, the only network show to have received such a boon was ABC's LOST. The show's producers were able to pick when they would end the show a full three years in advance, after unsteady scheduling for the show's third season caused it to lose millions of viewers. That announcement kept the series afloat and provided a narrative resurgence for the series (flash-forwards, anyone?). An end date gave audiences and potential viewers confidence that the show had a plan. And while not all viewers were happy after the realization of that plan, it at least gave the series a clean ending, not letting it spin its wheels until it was euthanized -- er, cancelled.

Is this the pattern that should be followed? For genre television, it should be mandatory.

Take Fringe, for example. It's the finest show on network television. It's struggling with viewership, but from week to week, the writers provide us with complex mythology with a human touch. Jeff Pinkner and J.H. Wyman say that they have a planned ending for the series. With the future of the show beyond its upcoming fourth season in such doubt, why doesn't FOX set them a date to wrap up the story in a satisfying and meaningful way? Whether it be at the end of season 4 or with a shortened fifth season, Fringe deserves an end date. The nightmare for every genre television fan is the anti-finale, when a show is suddenly cancelled and nothing is resolved.

Shows like FlashForward, The Event, and V might have been salvaged if they had been given end dates from the beginning. They all started out strongly, but audiences soon fled. Even I quit watching V in season two because I was tired of knowing that Erica's attempts to stop the alien invasion would always fail. Had those shows been given a set end date when they started; say, three seasons for each, they might have held onto viewership and even thrived. The same goes for shows like AMC's Rubicon, which was sadly cancelled after its first season. Most viewers who stopped watching did so because they felt the show's pace was too glacial (I, for one, loved it). Would they have been so impatient if AMC had declared that Rubicon would run for four seasons?

The reason this will probably never happen is that making such commitments is a gamble for networks. With that plan, failures will plague a network for three years, instead of just one. It's a double-edged sword, too; if a show is wildly successful, having a three-year cutoff date means that the network won't be able to reap the full benefits. Networks want long-term successes, but don't seem to have realized that in the world of genre television, there are no long-term successes.

Shows like FlashForward fail because the viewers who watch them want to see a story with a beginning, middle, and end. But networks won't give them that because they're afraid that shows might fail. It's a never-ending cycle that leaves both networks and audiences with a string of failed shows who had great potential.

The 2011-2012 season will have plenty of genre additions to the network television fray. NBC is premiering the series Awake, which tells the story of a man torn between two realities, at the midseason, while FOX's Alcatraz, about time-travelling escapees of the titular prison, will debut around the same time. Both shows are absolutely stellar, but there's a cloud that hangs over them. Will they be cancelled? It seems likely that one or both of them won't make it to a second season, probably leaving us with unsatisfying conclusions. With the bad track record of genre shows on network television, why don't these networks take a little gamble and try something new? If it fails, they're stuck with a middling show for a couple more years than they would. But if it succeeds, they'll have a successful show (that makes them money, which is what they care about) and happy audiences.

It might be worth the risk.

After all, it is a genre show about aliens that premiered right in the middle of the X-Files' run. Look at it this way: it looked like a FlashForward to the X-Files' LOST. And to some extent, that's what it is. After all, it only lasted a season, featured a more initially focused concept, and gained a very devout cult following that tried its best to save the show. Sounds familiar, right?

Nineties children like myself will probably remember a book series called Animorphs by K.A. Applegate. I only drop that reference because it's perhaps the best comparison to the plot of Dark Skies. If you drop the animal-transformation gimmicks, you've got an extremely dark story of a covert alien invasion carried out by parasites who enter your head and take over. It's a less-camp Invasion of the Bodysnatchers arc.

The thing that separates Dark Skies from those two, though, is the conspiracy angle. What angle, you ask? Oh, how about the JFK-was-assassinated-by-the-aliens-because-he-found-out-about-their-plan-and-Jack-Ruby-was-possessed-by-an-alien-to-kill-Oswald angle? Or the aliens-trying-to-place-sublimenal-messages-in-a-Beatles-broadcast-triggered-by-"Can't-Buy-Me-Love" angle? (Or the I'm-obnoxiously-using-too-many-hyphens angle.)

Does that sound just crazy enough to be good? Because it is. Dark Skies is what it would be like if The X-Files had a lovechild with Mad Men. Now, sometimes the historical impersonations just aren't right on. The John Lennon impersonator in the fourth episode isn't bad, but the rest of the band doesn't even look like they're trying to resemble the Fab Four (George Harrison was nowhere near that chubby, folks). And sometimes it seems as though the writers looked at brief descriptions of famous characters from the 1960's and thought, "How can we throw in aliens to explain that interesting character trait?"

But aside from those hiccups and a really tiresome pace, Dark Skies is a surprising amount of fun. Thanks to Shout! Factory, the entire series will be released on DVD for the first time, after a lengthy fight on the part of the fans. The six-disc set is worth the money, too.

It comes with a little booklet with a lengthy introduction by series co-creator Bryce Zabel, which is the appetizer for the meat-and-potatoes six disc set, which is nicely fitted together into three thinpak cases. As for the special features, the set is teeming with them. Commentaries, recut episodes, the list goes on and on. There's even a three-part retrospective on the series featuring Zabel, co-creator Brent V. Friedman, and stars Eric Close and Megan Ward. The set even includes promos for the show used on NBC during the show's original run. And though the eighteenth and final episode has a mildly satisfying conclusion, the blueprints for a never-made second season are included in the set as well. When I sit "teeming," I meant it. It's a worthy set to get for any genre fan. LOST, Fringe, The X-Files, FlashForward - if you liked any of those shows, chances are you'll like Dark Skies.

People were touting it as the next Lost, partly because of its huge story and possibly partly because it aired on the same network. Unfortunately, its deliberate pace, extended hiatus in the middle of the season, and other pitfalls meant that it only lasted for its inaugural run. Shame, too, because here ABC had given us an ambitious, unique series with a pretty darn good cast. It was a favorite of mine, and I'm glad to see that it has been released in one complete volume, rather than the half-season put out earlier this year. (Shame there's no Blu-Ray release, though.)

Let's take a look at this release and see how it sends off a great show.

The Show

It's entirely possible that I'm in a minority here, but I liked FlashForward when it aired. Regrettably, I almost appreciate it more now that it's over. When it first started, it took awhile to catch on; I found myself DVRing episodes instead of watching them live. Yet I stuck with it and I'm glad that I did - the second half of the season picks up pace and ended up being appointment television around my house. The only downer is that the series doesn't come to a complete close at the end of the season, no doubt reflecting hopes that it would be renewed - but don't worry, because it's still a worthy ending.

A quick summary for those who didn't watch: the entire world blacks out for two minutes and 17 seconds, during which everyone sees a vision of their future (or most of us do, anyway). The FBI forms a task force known as Mosaic to investigate the blackout, its aftereffects and who or what might be behind it. Multiple plot strands emerge from this, including a love triangle between lead FBI agent Mark Benford (Joseph Fiennes), his surgeon wife Olivia (Lost's Sonya Walger), and Lloyd Simcoe (Swingtown's Jack Davenport), one of the scientists who might be involved in the blackout. The show also features great performances from Star Trek's John Cho as Mark's troubled partner Demitri Noh and relative newcomer Christine Woods as computer expert Janis Hawk. It especially gets a shot in the arm from the second-half addition of the vastly underrated Michael Ealy (Sleeper Cell, Takers) as abrasive CIA agent Marshall Vogel. Ealy walks away with any scene he's in, and makes everyone around him better.

This is definitely the kind of show that requires attention and patience. The first few episodes start slow, but the show picks up, and does provide information early on that comes into play later. It wants to be both a global show and a character-driven show, and sometimes one works more than the other, but it's an enjoyable ride for anyone who's willing to pay attention and who wants something to contemplate after the TV's been turned off.

The DVDs

FlashForward comes in one plastic snapcase with a cardboard slipcover. I'm generally wary of cardboard slipcovers, as they can become damaged in a hurry when the boxes don't want to go back inside them, but this one slides on and off easily. I did notice one weird thing: the cover art inside the plastic cover of the case had already started to wrinkle and warp by the time I received my set. I can only guess this has something to do with the weird Southern California heat. It's disappointing, but since it's inside the plastic case, isn't a loss unless you really, really like your DVD artwork to be spotless. Also, the photo they use of Sonya Walger makes her look really annoyed. I'm disappointed that Michael Ealy didn't make it onto the front of the box, but that's just because I like him.

Inside the case, you won't find a booklet (though you will find an advertisement for Blu-Ray, which is kind of funny considering ABC first advertised a Blu-Ray release for FlashForward that apparently was pulled from the schedule). All the information about what's on which disc is actually on the inside of the case, meaning you have to move the discs out of the way to read it. This is a little annoying, but bearable. The inside artwork uses some of the great promo photos they shot with the cast inside a clock tower, which I absolutely love. Discs are stored in a flip-through manner, except for the last one, which affixes on the rear inside of the case itself. They do stick when trying to remove them, but that's common for most DVDs these days.

The actual DVD art is simple and easy to read. No characters on these discs (which say Season 1 on them, oddly), but they do indicate which episodes are on which discs (assuming you know your episode numbers) and which have special features. The problem is that neither the discs nor the list of special features in the box tells you which special features are where, so if you're looking for something specific, you're just going to have to guess.

The menus are also a little maddening. I started with the final disc, only to discover the menus are not only dark, but actually oriented diagonally. Not only does it make them a little difficult to read, but it also makes them harder to navigate, especially when I played the discs back on my laptop. I'm not sure if this is intentional or not, but when I navigated between menus, the entire screen would go black for a few seconds before the next menu would come up. Either it's a nod to the blackouts, or it's just a weird menu glitch, but it's annoying.

As far as technical specs, the show is presented in widescreen (1:78:1) that has been "enhanced for 16x9 televisions," but I didn't notice anything better or worse than other widescreen presentations. There are English and Spanish subtitles, and Dolby Digital 5.1 audio.

The Special Features

Firstly - this release contains all the special features that were on the Season 1, Part 1 release from February, as weird as it is to see features made to promote the second half of the season on a complete series release. The good news is this means that if you bought that release, you can get this one and give that one to someone else who should watch the show, especially if you printed the online coupon off the DVD website that saves you $10 off this edition.

We've provided a handy rundown and some video clips of the special features that were released earlier today, so rather than just repeat that information, I'll just give you some of the highlights. The blooper reel is pretty hilarious (apparently this cast has a lot of trouble with cars). As a writer and general TV production buff, I enjoyed the "FlashForward On Set" series, which shows how they produced certain moments over the course of the series. There's even a brief featurette devoted to that enigmatic kangaroo, though frustratingly it's mostly about how no one else knows what it means either. Some explanations are offered, but you're not going to get a definitive answer as to what the heck that was all about. "Architects of Destiny" covers some of the major events in the series - so don't watch it if you haven't seen the whole series - and gives you as close as you're going to get to interviews with the cast.

Jack Davenport is a longtime favorite actor of mine, and he's an absolute riot on all these featurettes, so I'm glad there's a lot of him to be had. There's not much Michael Ealy, though (sadness), and there's not anything from Gabrielle Union, who plays Demitri's fiancee, Zoey. I'd have liked to have seen more with the actors, as this group of actors is particularly engaging. They do show excerpts from last year's Comic-Con panel, which sadly isn't included either.

You'll have to hunt to find the sole commentary for "Revelation Zero" on Disc 3 under Bonus Features. I can say from interviewing them that this is one smart and interesting group of people to talk to, so I'm surprised that all this set has is one commentary track!

Most disappointing, though, is that there's not anything here about what could have been. I don't know when the decision was made to make this a "complete series" set, but it would have been really neat to see a featurette on what the creative team had up their sleeve had the show continued. It certainly would have been brain candy for the show's devoted fanbase.

The Bottom Line

It's great to finally have the complete series of FlashForward on DVD. As enjoyable as the show was for me, it's even better when I can marathon it and see the entire arc unfold. There's a good selection of special features here, but there was opportunity to include a lot more, and the difficult navigation is definitely a pain. It's not a perfect set by any means, and fans of the show will lament what isn't there, but the content of the show itself is so good that I would be a fool not to recommend this set if only for having the whole twenty-two episodes on your hands. There are some missed opportunities here, but the show is worth adding to your collection.

The entire series was released on DVD today (August 31) and if you're a fan of the show, you should definitely check it out. We have videos below containing some of the bonus features from the DVD set, including some bloopers, some mini documentaries and a few deleted scenes.

For those of you who don't know, Techland is a subsidiary of TIME magazine, one of the most prestigious magazines in the world.

Though I've been saying that Fringe is quickly approaching the level of quality that LOST held, McMillan took one step further and claimed that Fringe's third season will "one-up" the six-year Island drama that ended in may.

"Not content with introducing mainstream audiences to the concept of the multiverse last season," McMillan wrote, "Fox's Fringe is about to take its Parallel Earth storyline to the next level - and, in the process, one-up Lost's flashsideways narrative from that show's final season."

By the end of that sentence, you can already hear the collective raising of hackles from LOST fans everywhere. But hold on, there's more. After quoting an interview with Fringe star Jasika Nicole talking about Fringe's new format, McMillan threw the glove.

"Alternate storyarcs for alternate episodes for half the season? Suddenly Lost looks weirdly unambitious."

Ohhh, snap.

Now, here's the weird thing about it. In a way, I kind of agree with McMillan. There's no doubt that LOST is one of the greatest TV shows of all time (even if you didn't like the ending), and its status in history is pretty much cemented. But while everyone is struggling to find "the next LOST" in new shows (like last year's fizzling FlashForward and the brand new AMC series Rubicon), most haven't realized that we've had the next LOST on our plates for two years.

Having premiered on a dull year for sci-fi TV (the FlashForward/V rush didn't begin until the next year), Fringe had a slow start gaining its footing, and many viewers left the show in exasperation. But, in a strange exception to the general TV rule, Fringe really started to get better at around the midway point of the season. And don't even talk about season two, which was quite possibly the best of the fall TV season. Fringe really came into its own, though most viewers didn't stick around to see that happen.

Now, we're looking at an even more ambitious season three, which will probably blow our collective mind. If Fringe can increase it's season-to-season quality as much as it did last year, I say hell yeah, we're looking at a show that is as good as our beloved LOST. Will it get the same recognition? No, because it didn't change TV in the way that LOST did. But will it fill the LOST void? Again, I say: hell yeah.

Fringe's third season premieres Thursday, September 23 at 9/8c.

The campaign, titled "SAVE FLASHFORWARD!" has been running since that point, and even organized blackouts in front of ABC offices around the world, or urging others to vote for FlashForward as the most wrongful cancellation of 2010 (though they've had to fight it out with Legend of the Seeker fans). They've even taken to calling various networks (including SyFy and Starz) to get the series picked up by another network, a la Southland. They have had no indication of success other than rumors that ABC exec Stephen McPherson (no relation to myself) is "cracking." After all, we remember what happened when Jericho was brought back -- it was cancelled all over again.

Today, SAVE FLASHFORWARD! reported another rumor: Starz might be looking to pick up FlashForward. Well, that's the word on the street, anyway. "I just called Starz and the rep told me that they are agressively (sic) seeking the license for Flash Forward (sic) and that a lot of people have been calling about Flash Forward (sic)," the site reported, according to Scott, someone apparently involved with the campaign.

Fans are being encouraged to call Starz and make the case for FlashForward, an option available through the toll-free number 866-888-4010 (provided by the group). Starz would be in the best position to host the show, considering they recently nabbed star Joseph Fiennes for their new series Camelot. Some fans complain about having to pay for Starz (a pay cable channel), though others assure them that Starz shows are available through Netflix (speaking of which, subscription to Starz might soon become a necessity, thanks to their surge in original programming, including the BBC co-production of Torchwood season four).

What do you think? Is FlashForward worth saving, and if so, is Starz the right channel to save it? Sound off in the comments below, or head over to our forums to start a discussion on the issue.

Fan attempts to revive the cancelled series will most likely prove unsuccessful, especially when you look at this release: FlashForward: The Complete Series. The five-disc set will be hitting shelves on August 31, and I'll definitely be picking up because, season two or no season two, this show was brilliant. It won't be classified amongst the wrongfully cancelled masterpieces like Firefly, Defying Gravity, and Carnivale, but it will still hold a special place on my shelf.

The packaging of the set is pretty cool. In contrast to the usually blue color spectrum of series promotions, the cover is red, and features an eye surrounded by images of the main characters. The images of the characters I don't like. They're all sort of bland, and it feels a little like a badly-done version of the LOST Season 3 cover. I greatly prefer the Season One, Part 1 cover to this. However, I do like that the four star rating is still a big part of the DVD. It's a reminder that this was a great series, even if it was cancelled too soon. This set will hold a position of honor on my shelf, right between Firefly and Flight of the Conchords.

Fans Start "Save FlashForward" Campaign on Facebook

If you're like me, you really enjoyed FlashForward. The show took a while to get its legs, but once it did, it was fantastic. The entire second half of the season was absolutely fantastic, and I was disappointed when it was cancelled. Though it got to finish out its first season, the finale left me wanting more -- after all, it ended on the cliffhanger of another flashforward. Fans were also left wondering about Mark Benford's survival after a giant explosion ripped through the FBI office just moments after everyone woke up from the flashforward. Mark didn't seem to have much of a chance, but knowing FlashForward, he probably parachuted out or something.

In any case, I know quite a few fans who have commented on my FlashForward cancellation articles wanting ABC to bring back the show for a second season. Well, fans, here's your chance to let your voice be heard.

A group of fans have created a Facebook page titled "SAVE FLASHFORWARD!" which, as you can imagine, is a gathering of fans who would like to see the aftermath of the series. These fans believe that FlashForward, like Chuck, really just needs a second chance at life. Maybe you're one of those fans. The page's mission is simple:

It is here that we congregate to show our support for a GREAT show we all watch. We are sending calendars with 4/29 circled, friendship bracelets and letters to show our continuing support for flashforward and we are sending them to the head of ABC, Stephen McPherson, who with a flick of his pen can give it second life. We are getting FLASHFORWARD a SECOND SEASON! SAVE FLASHFORWARD!!

I have "liked" the page, though I am ultimately unsure of its potency. Sure, it can't hurt to try to save the show, and if a massive outpouring of fans do this, it could work. But 13,070 fans (at the time of this writing) probably won't be enough to save the show, which was bleeding millions of viewers. Can't hurt to try, though.

The series finale, "Future Shock," begins on April 29th, the day of the blackout, at 8:42pm (nice Lost shout-out with the time!). Mark is being held in the Los Angeles detention center. Olivia and Charlie are at the beach. Nicole is sad, staring at Bryce's drawing of Keiko until she gets up to leave. Keiko and her mother are at the airport. Finally, Bryce enters the immigration holding center. He asks the security guard Keiko's whereabouts, but all she can tell him is that she left an hour ago. Bryce asks if he can have a phone number for her, but the guard denies his request. Seeing that the guard is reading a cheesy romance paperback, Bryce avails the guard of his flash and how he is in love with Keiko without meeting her yet. The guard seems intrigued, "Is that really what you saw in your flash?" When Bryce affirms his story, the guard responds, "You know, in my flash, I found $100 in my pocket, and I had no idea how it got there." Bryce, catching on quickly, fishes out his wallet.

In Afghanistan, Aaron sits over his daughter's body. He doesn't understand, because in his flash, he clearly saw Tracy alive. Khmair, looking to humor his new friend, checks Tracy again...and detects a faint pulse! Tracy is alive. Meanwhile, Demetri, Janis and Simon pull up to NLAP. Simon says that if he can get into the lab's mainframe, he will be able to trace the blackout back to, and identify, Hellinger's conspiracy. He has a device that he can use to decode the computerized locks for the building, but he needs to get a receiver close to a guard's ID card. Demetri scoffs, wondering how they'll be able to get close to the security guards when they are trying to avoid detection; Demetri does not trust Simon in the slightest. Janis asks Demetri to trust her, and Demetri agrees. Just then, Janis experiences some stomach pains -- is there something wrong with the baby? Demetri wants to take her to the hospital, but Janis refuses. Taking down this conspiracy is too important to her, so they will get the information they need, and then go to the hospital. At the L.A. lockup, Wedeck enters Mark's cell and hands him his gun and badge. "Don't make me regret this," he warns Mark as they leave.

9:02pm. Wedeck is driving Mark home when they receive a call. Numerous bombs have been planted at FBI headquarters. It looks like Mark is coming with Wedeck back to the FBI. At NLAP, an SUV rolls and crashes near the security post. A woman, Janis, is slumped over the wheel. A security guard runs to the car, with gun drawn, and orders Janis out of the car. She exits the car holding her stomach, complaining of problems with her baby. Out of sight, Demetri and Simon huddle near an entrance to the lab. Simon's device won't decode the lock unless Janis gets closer to the guard's ID. At that moment, she collapses into his arms. The device reads the entrance code and unlocks the door. Janis, however, seems to be in real distress. The guard calls for an ambulance as Simon pulls a concerned Demetri into the building. At the beach, Charlie asks her mother why, when it is almost 10:00, are they not going home. Does that mean that some things can change? Olivia answers in the affirmative, when she hears a familiar voice call out for Charlie. It's Dylan, with Lloyd trailing closely behind. Their respective security details took Lloyd to Olivia's location. Lloyd tells her that they need to go to her house to recreate the conditions of their flashes. If they don't, he fears he will be unable to make the breakthrough regarding the blackout, the formula, and the QED. Olivia protests, but Lloyd tells her that he can't do it without her -- she is part of the equation.

As Bryce leaves the immigration center, Nicole arrives in the parking lot. She apologizes for keeping the information about Keiko's location from him. He apologizes for letting he relationship between he and Nicole get to the point it did; he has always been in love with Keiko, and now that she is in L.A., he needs to find her. He was given a phone number for her, a number that is for a sushi restaurant right there in L.A., the one he saw in his flash. Nicole smiles a smile of loss, but congratulates Bryce on his discovery, before rushing off. At the airport, Keiko and her mother get in line at security. Keiko's mother sees that her daughter is visibly upset at the prospect of leaving her mystery man. Keiko's mother tells her to be careful in her search, before slamming a nearby TSA agent with her bag. A scuffle ensues as Keiko's mother yells in Japanese and creates a scene, a diversion for Keiko to escape. Upon reaching the bomb scene at the FBI office, Wedeck tells Mark to stay in the car (reminds me of Chuck!), and that he was able to contact one of Mark's friends. Wedeck dials a number on his phone and hands it to Mark. On the other end is Aaron. Aaron heard that Mark was having some issues, so they should talk about that instead of the fact that Aaron is in Afghanistan(!). Mark tells him about how he lost it and drank. Aaron reminds Mark that they always have choice to do or not do things, but Mark is only half-listening. Mark spies Hellinger being led out of the building. He hangs up with Aaron and exits the car to confront Hellinger. Hellinger taunts Mark for his condition (and the fact that he, Hellinger, was right about the future he predicted for Mark). Mark is unable to get much information from Hellinger, but vows to take him down. When Mark leaves, Hellinger catches the eye of a couple bomb squad members. He slightly nods, and the SWAT guys return the nod. Hellinger has people on the inside.

9:32pm. Olivia, Charlie, Lloyd and Dylan enter Olivia's house. Charlie has a new goldfish to show Dylan, so they run upstairs. "My house is your house," Charlie tells Dylan, a phrase that Dylan would repeat in his flash. Olivia remarks to Lloyd that they are only a few minutes form his epiphany. Should they jsut take their positions at 10:00? Lloyd says they should, "but I'll keep my shirt on this time." The two share a laugh. At NLAP, Simon enters the control center, but the door closes behind him, locking out Demetri. Demetri orders Simon to let him in immediately. Simon protests that he doesn't know what happened, but Demetri doesn't trust him. Again Demetri orders Simon open the door, which he does. Truly, Simon didn't know what happened; Demetri is going to have to trust Simon. Simon extracts the QED ring, saying that it is Simon's last bit of leverage. As a sign of trust, he gives it to Demetri. Back at the FBI, Mark is informed by Vogel that there are bombs on at least five floors. Mark figures they are coming after the Mosaic investigation, and if so, they will be going after Lloyd, too. Mark asks Vogel to secure Lloyd, who will be at Olivia's house, according to everyone's flashes. Vogel tells Mark that in his flash, he saw himself telling another agent that Mark was dead. Mark says he'll be safe, Vogel just needs to secure Lloyd.

At Olivia's house, Charlie comes downstairs to tell her mother that Dylan is doing something weird. They go up to Olivia's bedroom and find Dylan writing a formula on the mirror. Lloyd notices that it links the QED, blueprints and blackout. It's the formula for the Tachyon Constant, and Lloyd needs to solve it right now. In the FBI garage, the SWAT team meets up with the bomb squad. The bomb squad whips out some guns and mows down the SWAT team. After the massacre, they put on the masks Mark saw in his flash and make their way into the building proper. While Janis arrives at the hospital, Olivia remarks to Lloyd that she has now realized that although she has fought her flash, there they are, in the exact place their flashes depicted. "The future happened," she remarks before moving in to share a kiss with Lloyd. Back at the FBI, Vreede and Wedeck are informed that Mark is inside the building. They follow in after him, and hear gunfire in the stairwell. They make their way toward the sounds in search of Mark, who is standing in his office, staring at his Mosaic board. "I'm exactly where I'm supposed to be," Mark notes to himself.

Bryce arrives at the sushi restaurant, but is denied entrance (despite his rather good Japanese). There is a private party so he cannot come in. Bryce pleads that he is supposed to meet someone there, but he is denied again. About to turn around, Bryce is stopped by the voice of a woman who recognizes Bryce as "Keiko's man." Upon hearing this, the manager lets Bryce in. Meanwhile, Keiko is trying to get to the restaurant, but is stuck in a tax in traffic. She eventually gets out and runs toward the restaurant. Nicole, upset at her encounter with Bryce, drives down a back road. An oncoming car swerves into her lane, causing Nicole to drive off the road and into a lake. Like in her flash, Nicole drifts deeper and deeper into the water.

9:55pm. Simon can't find the correct file on the mainframe. Seeing that Demetri is remarkably tense, he assures the agent that Janis will be OK. Noticing that it is almost ten, Simon notes that he needs to send Lloyd a text message of some sort as that is what Lloyd saw in his flash. Simon decides on sending Lloyd a bit of a "wave formula" Lloyd used to use as his e-mail signature. Outside in the city, revelers count down the final seconds before 10:00pm. 3...2...1...Happy Flash Day! Nicole is sinking deeper into the lake. Tracy opens her eyes with Aaron hovering over her. Janis receives an emergency sonogram. Lloyd gets Simon's text, and realizes that the Tachyon Constant is a wave, but not a constant at all. He calls Mark to tell him the information, and, using the completed formula, determines that the second blackout is to occur April 29, 2010...tonight! Keiko runs into the restaurant and sees Bryce. Nicole is grabbed out of the water. Janis' doctor tells her that the baby is fine, but that it is a boy, not a girl as Janis was first told. Olivia comes out of her bedroom and looks over the railing at Lloyd (shirted) sitting on the couch. Vreede chases some of the intruders, and uses the electronic lock to continue after them (as he saw in his flash). Wedeck makes his way into the bathroom, and hides in a stall (similar to his flash). Mark, in front of the Mosaic board, recognizes that, unlike in his flash, the red connecting strings are missing. He takes out Gabriel's book and puts the strings up. Mark writes down the letters indicated by the strings' end points. They spell out "Ten-Fourteen pm." The next blackout is going to occur in about twelve minutes! At that moment, the masked gunmen enter the floor of Mark's office. Vogel arrives at Olivia's house and tells the posted agent that "Mark Benford is dead," before continuing, "He ran into the building. He doesn't have a chance." (Note: was this comment made as if Vogel was recognizing the futility of Mark's efforts, that he was sad Mark was about to die, or was Vogel involved in Hellinger's plot and was assuming, triumphantly, that Mark was about to die? Discuss.) Everyone's flashes came true, almost exactly.

"Countdown" open, appropriately, with a date and time stamp: April 29th, 3:23am. Charlie calls out for her mother. Olivia rushes to her daughter's room and asks what is wrong. Charlie had a bad dream, one that leads her to say, "Today's the day daddy is going to die."

7:26am. In Janis' apartment, Simon explains that once the public makes the connection that he is Suspect Zero, he is a dead man. So, what doe sSimon want to fo then, Janis wonders. Simon replies thathe wants revenge against the conspiracy of which he was a part. He figures that if he can get into NLAP and take a look at the accelerator, he can determine the flaw in the mainframe that can prevent a second blackout. Janis is hesitant, so Simon promises that if she can get him into NLAP, he will turn himself in afterwords. Meanwhile, at the FBI, Mark and Demetri are eating breakfast. Mark gives Demetri a CD withfifteen covers of "Islands in the Stream," and tells Demetri that he should get on the plane with Zoeytoday, and fly to Hawaii. Demetri protests that today is the flash forward day and that he needs to be there, but Mark insists. Is Demetri actually getting cold feet? Demetri says its not cold feet, so Mark, not necessarily believing his partner, tells him that although their relationship is what it is today, marrying Olivia was the best thing that ever happened to him. Cut to Lloyd calling Olivia and saying that he wants them to be together tonight. Olivia tells Lloyd that Charlie is having a hard time withher dream and the prospect that Mark might be killed, so she's not sure getting together is the best idea.

Back in the FBI offices, Vogel informs Mark that Hellinger, who is being held at the FBI, made a fortune using his flashes to play the stock market. Wedeck enters and tells the men that after eight hours of interrogation, Hellinger finally said one thing: he will onyl talk to Mark Benford. Mark enters the interrogation room and asks Hellinger if he cause the blackout. Hellinger doesn't want to speak of blackouts but rather Mark. Mark asks a second time and Hellinger finally answers that yes, he was responsible for the blackout, but that is of no matter now. Asking for paper and a pen, Hellinger draws a diagram, and explains that he has seen multiple version of the future, but that all of them, Mark interrogates Hellinger in the very room they are in. Mark loses it and attacks Hellinger. This event subsequently leads to Mark's murder in his office, every time. Mark balks at this information, but Hellinger insists. Admitting that it seems a bit self-serving, Hellinger states flatly that if Mark keeps Hellinger in custody, Mark is going to die. Mark laughs, and notices the diagram. Something on it intrigues him. He tells Hellingerthat he wants to stop a second blackout, and with the diagram, Hellinger just told Mark his next move.

9:10am. Mark meets with Lloyd, and shows him Hellinger's diagram -- specifically, a symbol on one of the time branches Hellinger drew. Lloyd identifies the symbol as the one representing the Tachyon Constant, a theoretical subatomic particle that travels faster than light. Lloyd notices that next to the symbol, Hellinger has written the word "wipe." He explains to Mark that he's not sure what Hellinger was describing because tachyons are so small that they can't be touched, let alone wiped. At his home, meanwhile, Nicole brings Bryce some cupcakes in celebration of Flash Forward Day. She sees that he drew a picture of her, in the same book he sketched Keiko. Nicole asks Bryce if he's OK with "us." He says he is, and is looking forward to their date that night; he has no interest in a theoretical woman (Keiko), when he has Nicole right there. Keiko is shown in an immigration detention center, being told that she needs to post a bond, or be held until her hearing, which could be a year away.

Demetri meets Zoey at the airport; he wants to talk before they leave. Demetri tells his fiance that he loves her, so he should have told her this sooner, but he impregnated Janis as a favor to her. Zoey, understandably, is shocked. Demetri begs her to marry him, but she tells him that she is going to fly to Hawaii with her parents. Demetri should not get on the plane. They will talk after she returns. In Afghanistan, Khamiris evaluating Tracy's injuries. He tells Aaron that she is in a serious condition, but Aaron insists she's going to be alright because he saw it in her flash. With that, Tracy begins to cough up blood. Aaron, seeing a captured member of Jericho, grabs the mercenary and demands to know why they destroyed Tracy's patrol, and subsequently kidnapped her. Eventually, the Jericho man gives up that Tracy's unit came upon an experiment Jericho was running, a test run for the blackout. Further, Tracy, who was within the perimeter of the experiment, somehow didn't black out and they wanted to know why. Back at the FBI, Mark tells Vogel that he has a lead. One of the businesses Hellinger used was called Tachyon Enterprises, so he is going to go investigate it. Vogel tells Mark that he isn't going anywhere, and benches him at the FBI office; another unit will check out the lead. Demetri, having been shunned by Zoey, heads to Janis'. He knocks on the door, but Simon opens it. Simon tries to slam the door, but Demetri pushes it in. The men draw guns at each other and have a standoff. Demetri demands to know what Simon is doing in Janis' apartment. She tells her friend that Simon is there making a deal.

1:34pm. Janis explains that Simon wants to check out the accelerator, which Simon says he is not going to use. Janis steps between the two drawn guns, telling Demetri that he should just leave and pretend he never stopped by. Sensing the danger abating, Simon begins to lower his gun. Janis whips around and wrestles the gun from Simon and cuffs him. Simon tells her that she is going to regret her actions for the rest of her life. At the FBI, Mark, Vogel and Wedeck listen to the radio feed of the agents investigating Mark's lead. It is a trap, as the agents are ambushed and killed. Mark begins to lose it, demanding he get Hellinger, but Wedecktells him to calm down. At that moment, Mark hears Charlie calling for him -- Olivia has brought their worried daughter to see her father. Mark embraces her and tells her to go into his office. After some small talk with Olivia, Mark finds Charlie in his office staring at the Mosaic board. He tells Charlie that he has something important for her to do. Mark asks his daughter to not be afraid. It's alright to be afraid at first, but that she should know that her daddy loves her, and that everything will be OK, no matter what.

ABC has decided to renew one of its two on-the-bubble science fiction outings. The show that has survived is the alien invasion epic V. The series was, along with FlashForward, ABC's hope to fill the niche of LOST, its departing champion which will leave the small screen on May 23. It has been long speculated that ABC would choose to renew at least one of the shows, despite sagging ratings of both. V, which has fared slightly better, was the draft pick, and it now seems obvious that Anna and her brood will continue to secretly threaten the planet for at least thirteen more episodes after next week's season finale, "Red Sky."

V is the first series to cheat the post-LOST curse. Shows like Invasion and The Unusuals all aired after LOST's timeslot, and none of them made it past a year. But, as Jack Shephard's beloved Red Sox broke the curse of the Bambino in 2004, V broke the curse of the Island in 2010.

Of course, V's victory might bode poorly for other science fiction fans, because it's all but digging FlashForward's grave. ABC's other struggling sci-fi series has even less of a chance at life that it did before (it had been said that it had less than a 50% chance of renewal). The Visitors' victory seems to mean that, unfortunately, there won't be another blackout as Mark Benford predicted. Instead, it seems that the alien ships will be bearing down on us instead.

We won't be getting confirmation of FlashForward's cancellation until ABC's upfronts early next week, but I'm expecting some fallout from FlashForward's small but dedicated fanbase if the show isn't picked up.

Meanwhile, V will probably return for a midseason replacement in January, and it's been all but confirmed that season two will contain thirteen episodes, one more than the first season has. Regardless of what happens in the finale next week, it seems a safe bet that we'll be seeing Elizabeth Mitchell continue to face off against the sadistic alien Anna in stakes that probably will continue to rise.

V's first season (and not series!) finale will air next week on May 18 after LOST's penultimate episode. My recap for V will be the last one of the week, unfortunately -- I'll be out of commission from Wednesday until Sunday night, though I'll be back in time for LOST's series finale.

This week's episode begins with Wedeck's voice intoning the usual "On October 6th...," but this time, he is giving a speech to his FBI employees. Tomorrow is D-Day, April 29th, so they must be prepared for anything, including an attack on their building. Mark and Demetri are coordinating SWAT and other security measures. Janis and Vreede will brief agents on other special procedures. Their assignments given, the agents break up. Wedeck asks Mark what plans are in place to locate Simon and the QED ring, and Mark explains they are doing everything possible to locate him. The agents enter the conference room where Vogel is showing a news report of Suspect Zero. Somehow, the news got a hold of the video of Simon in the stadium. Mark points out that it is not the FBI's video, as the angle is different. Who shot this video, and why did they release it now?

Simon is in a darkly lit bar, practicing his American accent and his new name, David Walker. A woman, Lita, take a seat next to him. She asks if she's seen him before, and when Simon responds "no," she tells him that he mustn't hide his pretty face under a hat and sunglasses. She tells him that if he tries to hide, "they" will just find him. She tells him that she has an offer for him, but that they need to talk somewhere else. Simon agrees to leave, and they do. Meanwhile, Zoey is waiting for Demetri at his desk. When he arrives, she asks him if he can take off tomorrow. Laughing, because he obviously can't take the day off, asks why? Zoey tells him that they should fly to Hawaii. Demetri immediately protests, saying that people are depending on him, he needs to be there to protect his colleagues and the people of L.A. Zoey protests, saying that, for once, they should make it about them, and no one else. She takes out a pair of plane tickets, and hands one to Demetri, telling him that she will be on the plane with or without him. Demetri says that what she is doing is unfair, but she leaves without responding.

Olivia and Gabriel examine Mark's Mosaic board. Mark enters and says hello to Gabriel. Gabriel introduces himself, and Olivia as "Olivia Simcoe." Before Mark can ask him why he called Olivia by that name, Gabriel starts to ramble about how Mark's board isn't right. He begs Mark to look at his book and compare the board to Gabriel's drawing of the board. Mark asks how he drew the picture ("With a pen."); has he been on Mark's office before. "Yes," Gabriel replies, "with Dr. Frost." Those gathered try to leave, but Gabriel refuses and throws one of his tantrums. Olivia says she'll stay behind, and once she does, Gabriel calms down.

Meeting in a bar, Janis tells Vogel that she wants out of her mission. Vogel tells her that she can't say no to killing Mark. They are so close to solving this case that the only way out for Janis is to finish what they started. Janis reluctantly agrees, but tells Vogel that Carleen's group are getting antsy. Vogel replies that she should give them something big, and exits. Later, in the FBI offices, Janis sees Demetri. S he apologizes for not returning his calls but she's been busy. He tells her that they need a plan for the baby. He wants to be a part of the baby's life, but Janis doesn't agree. The baby is hers alone; Demetri has a life with Zoey, so he should just walk away. Elsewhere in the office, Mark sees Olivia and tells her that he has set up security to patrol her house tomorrow. Olivia remarks that she misses the days they spoke not of security details, but PTA meetings, groceries and the like. Mark agrees. They notice that Gabriel is in Mark's office again, reconnecting strings on the Mosaic board. Mark asks him why he is changing the board. Gabriel, showing Mark the drawing in his book, tells Mark to "make it look right."

In Afghanistan, Aaron and Khamir survey one of Jericho's bases. Aaron takes photos of the camp and uploads them to a contact back in the States. Meanwhile, Simon and Lita are in a motel. Having just finished some extracurricular activities, they see that Simon has been positively identified as the awake man in the video of the blackout obtained by the news organizations. Lita explains to Simon that their boss, Hellinger, wants to speak with him. They are the only friends Simon has, now that he has been identified, so it would be best if he listened to Hellinger's offer. She warns Simon that Hellinger is rather charming, until he's not. There is a knock on the door -- it is Hellinger. At the FBI, the agents show Gabriel some pictures, among which are the murdered homeless man and Nhadra. Gabriel says that they were all at Raven River. Mark asks if through all of the flashes he had, does Gabriel remember when the next blackout will occur. He doesn't, but he does remember someone else at Raven River who used to help Frost: the Bug Guy. Can Gabriel remember anything more specific about "the Big Guy?" Well, Gabriel drew a picture of him on page fifteen of his book (Lost shout-out??). It is Hellinger, although the agents don't recognize him as such. Demetri enters, and Gabriel tries to hide in the hood of his sweatshirt. He yells that Demetri shouldn't be there. He is supposed to be dead. Demetri has to die for everything to work out right.

Back in the motel room, Hellinger tells Simon that it is time for him to come home. He can understand that Simon is angry with him, but he really has no other choice. He can't resume his work, and can't go out in public. If he will come work with Hellinger, Simon can continue to work, he'll be paid well, and they will even arrange for him to see his sister. "That's the carrot. What's the stick?" Simon wonders. Hellinger says "the stick is the stick." It's a measure to which he'd rather not have to resort, but at some point, he will have to cut his losses. Simon tells him that he knows Hellinger can't kill him because Simon is the only person who can calibrate the accelerator. Simon will let Hellinger know what his decision is soon. Simon grabs his hat and exits.

At the FBI, Mark tells Demetri that they are closing in on the bad guys, but Demetri is barely listening. "Did Gabriel get under your skin?" he asks of Demetri. Yes, he did, Demetri answers. He asks Mark if he thinks the future is somehow course correcting. "Do I believe the universe is pushing toward once certain outcome? No, I don't," Mark replies. Demetri wonders if he is screwing up the world somehow. Sure, Demetri is screwing things up, but it has nothing to do with the universe, Mark jokes. The partners laugh, and look over at Olivia and Gabriel. Demetri remarks that he can't wait until after tomorrow when they can go back to living normal lives, not always looking toward the future. At that moment, Lloyd enters and starts speaking with Olivia. "I'm looking forward to it," Demetri says. "Yeah, me too," Mark agrees. Lloyd says hi to Gabriel, and tells Olivia that he's having a hard time figuring out the decoherence equation. Gabriel begins rambling that Lloyd just needs to combine the pieces of the formula, and that Olivia and Lloyd need to work together to solve it. The would-be couple just look at each other, as Mark watches the scene.

This week's installment, "Collision Course," opens in Palo Alto, California at NLAP, two days before the blackout. Simon and Lloyd are discussing the timing for their experiment when Simon notices Lloyd is wearing the same jacket he wore when the ground was broken for their particle accelerator. Lloyd insists it's just an accident, but Simon tells him "There are no accidents." Simon receives a phone call from his mother, in which she tells him that his father has died; he'll be home immediately. Two days later, Lloyd is preparing for the final countdown to his experiment. At the prescribed time, the accelerator fires two atoms into each other, recreating the Big Bang. The camera zooms out to reveal a wave of energy emanating from California, and spreading across the globe. Oddly, simultaneously, there is a second wave spreading from Asia. The two waves collide, and the blackout hits. Everyone at NLAP collapses, with the journalist hitting her head on a desk. When they wake up, Lloyd sees the journalist, turns her over, and finds her dead.

Cut to a week before April 29th. Lloyd is being interviewed on a news program to discuss whether the flashes will come true. Lloyd explains that to quantum physicists, observation shapes reality, so it is possible to change the futures seen in the flashes; however, everyone may still be pushed toward the futures they saw. Like a "course correction," the anchor suggests (for a show that doesn't want to be compared to Lost, it certainly makes obvious allusions). Celia, the woman who was supposed to be killed accidentally by Al Gough, is brought on the show. She thanks Al's family again for his great sacrifice, and that she is proof the future can change. The program takes phone calls, and one caller asks Lloyd whether brain damage was possible. Lloyd answers he doesn't believe so, and takes another call. The second caller asks if it is possible a second blackout occur. Lloyd says, unequivocally, that a second blackout would be impossible. Celia is asked if she fears for her future, to which she responds that the universe has a different plan for her. Lloyd concludes the program by saying that come April 29th, they will all be where they are supposed to be.

Simon, now with a shiny black fake finger, is traveling in an SUV across a bridge. Out of the window, he sees...his sister, Anabelle. He orders the driver to go back, and he rushes up to her. Red dots that appear to be laser sights dance around Anabelle's face. She tells Simon that he has twelve hours to get the ring and hand it over to her captors. Simon notices the license plate number on the white van across the bridge, and finally at the pleading of his sister, leaves for the FBI. Once there, he asks a young tech to run the license plate number without telling his superiors. For an unknown price, the tech agrees. Meanwhile, at the hospital, Bryce is receiving chemotherapy. Nicole accidentally enters, not knowing he had an appointment to receive chemo at that time. She gives him a book, The Places That Scare You by Pema Chadron, to help him deal with his treatments. She tells Bryce that she wishes he would tell her when his chemo appointments are so she can be with him. He explains to Nicole that he doesn't tell her about his treatments because he doesn't want her to feel obligated to be with him. She promises that she doesn't feel obligated.

Demetri arrives at a crime scene and finds Fiona Shaw of MI6. Fiona had previously worked with the FBI when the blackout first occurred, and had seen herself working with Al Gough in her flash. The victim is a man named Andy who was supposed to have died from an allergic reaction, but survived past his "death date." An attendee at Blue Hand meetings, Andy was found dead, poison placed in his coffee, despite being in a room full of guns. In fact, this is the fourth member of the Blue Hand to have survived their "death date," but wind up murdered later. Demetri thinks it may be time to talk to Jeff Slingerland, aka Dr. Maurice Raynaud, the leader of the Blue Hand. Outside the hospital, Lloyd and Olivia grab some coffee and go for a walk. Lloyd is worried that he lied to the public by telling them that there won't be a second blackout. Further, he has no idea if the blackout caused any brain damage. He needs to crack the QED device so he can prevent another blackout. Olivia understands that he's stressed, but he needn't be; she will help him if she can. Arm in arm, he thanks her, and they walk off.

Mark calls Simon to come to his office. He knows about the license plate number Simon wanted run; young techs won't ruin their careers, even for a promised trip to the Bunny Ranch. Simon tells Mark that his sister ran away, but Mark calls his bluff. There is video of Simon meeting Anabelle on the bridge, and her posture and reactions to him indicate that she is in trouble, that she has been kidnapped. Simon cops to the truth, and tells Mark that he tried to get the license plate run because he will do anything to save his sister. That is exactly what Mark is afraid of. Is Mark afraid that Simon has been compromised in some way, Simon wonders. Mark isn't sure, but he knows that Simon has put the Mosaic investigation in jeopardy by not being truthful. Simon has one reason to be at the FBI, and that's to figure out the QED. Mark will find Anabelle.

Later, Simon is reviewing the video of his sister on the bridge. Lloyd, meanwhile, is looking at the QED ring, trying to figure out how it works. Simon tells him that he should get over his guilt because they did nothing wrong. "We can't save the world," he tells Lloyd. "Yes, we can," Lloyd defensively replies. "Isn't that a bit messianic?" Simon wonders. Lloyd wants to know what is bothering Simon, so Simon finally tells Lloyd about his sister. Lloyd tells Simon that he would have helped look for her if he had known. Simon knows, but there was nothing for Lloyd to do. Lloyd locks up the ring, and tells Simon that he will help in any way he can. In Wedeck's office, Mark tells Wedeck about his conversation with Simon. Wedeck informs mark that Simon's polygraph was inconclusive, but that they have to keep an eye on Dr. Campos.

Demetri and Fiona make their way to the high school where Slingerland teaches. Slingerland insists he is no longer affiliated with Blue Hand. The agents tell him about Andy. Slingerland replies that it is a shame what happened to Andy, but that the universe has a way of evening itself. Life is energy and it must remain balanced. When one person is born, another dies. If someone lives past when they are supposed to die, that energy needs to be balanced. This unnerves Demetri, so the agents leave. At the hospital, Bryce informs Olivia that Gabriel is doing well physically, save his right foot. Dylan appears, and asks Olivia where Charlie is. Olivia asks Lloyd, when he enters, what they are doing there. Dylan has occupational therapy, and he wanted to see Olivia; so did Lloyd. Gabriel sees Lloyd and starts yelling, "I knew it! You're so good together. Olivia and Lloyd, sitting in a tree...." Olivia gets Gabriel into his bed, when Vreede enters. He has lunch for Gabriel, and asks when he can bring Gabriel to the FBI to question him. Olivia says Gabriel won't be ready to leave any time soon, but she allows Vreede a few short questions when Vreede asks. Vreede hands Gabriel a book with elaborate drawings inside (the same drawing that flashed in the title card). The book is Gabriel's, and he had drawn the picture from one of his flashes. In fact, it is a drawing of mark's Mosaic board. Gabriel digs into the hamburger Vreede brought him, but begins to get upset when he sees the pickles, and lettuce and tomatoes...wait, he likes tomatoes!

Mark and Wedeck review videos of the van used to carry Anabelle to the bridge as it traveled through the city. They are able to narrow its location down to a few square blocks so Mark will go out to look for it. When Simon sees Mark leaving, he asks to come along. Mark refuses because he doesn't trust Simon, not at all. Further, Simon's "volunteer" for the Bureau is beginning to feel very convenient. Simon has only one responsibility: to figure out the QED. With Mark gone, Simon sets to trying to extract the ring from its locker. He tries to guess the password of the electronic lock, but appears to be unsuccessful. He goes right up to the locker's glass, and stares at the treasure, remembering his sisters words, "Please, Simon, give them what they want." Bryce visits his oncologist. There is good news; the experimental treatment has worked. Bryce's cancer is in full remission. Excited, Bryce thanks the doctor. "Your future awaits," the doctor tells Bryce as he leaves. Elsewhere in the hospital, a nurse asks Nicole about going to the immigration offices and administering flu shots to detainees. Nicole agrees, so the nurse gives her some files of the patients. Amongst the pile, Nicole sees the file for Keiko.

This week's episode begins with Janis, speaking in a voiceover over a scene of FBI agents running the six-mile obstacle course "Yellow Brick Road," describing how she joined the FBI. She never intended to join the FBI; she was a lawyer who hated her life. She wanted to do something patriotic. A friend, Demetri, got her to apply to eh Bureau, and she loved every second of it. She was not doing something that mattered. It is revealed that Janis is speaking two years before the blackout, to a woman named Leda, a headhunter. Janis tells her that she's not looking to quit the FBI, which she just joined. Leda tells her that she has an opportunity for Janis, and doesn't want her to quit. Rather, Leda's offer would be more like multitasking.

Cut to today, the FBI agents are reviewing the blueprints and other papers Frost was carrying when he was killed. Mark repeats Frost's final words, "In the end, you will be saved by the lady you see every day." Vogel expresses his skepticism at the whole mission: their primary suspect in the blackout, Frost, is dead, and Alda, a known terrorist, has escaped. Further, anything Frost said should b dismissed because he was crazy. "He may have been crazy," Mark counters, getting up in Vogel's face, "but he was always truthful." "Dial back the testosterone," Wedeck warns, trying to cool the agents down.

Olivia is at home, preparing to leave for the hospital. Gabriel is waiting for her in her kitchen, and scares her with ramblings about The Pixies. He tells Olivia that he was there, with her at the Pixies concert she attended during law school, and at Scott's wedding. Olivia warns him that there is an FBI agent outside the house that she is going to call if he doesn't leave. Gabriel tells her that Lloyd is her husband(!). Finally, as she threatens again to call the FBI agent in, he begs her to not get coffee from the man who looks like Mr. Clean. With that, he leaves. Meanwhile, Janis is at her obstetrician, who tells Janis that she is worried about Janis' baby. Janis is anemic, so the doctor would like her to see a specialist. Janis begrudgingly agrees to see the specialist. On her way to the hospital, Olivia calls Mark to tell him about Gabriel. She assures him that she and Charlie (who was already at school) are OK. Olivia pulls up to the hospital but sees a crash scene. A teenager crashed his car through the coffee stand. Amongst the rubble is a bald man who resembles Mr. Clean.

A year before the blackout, Janis enters a pet store. She asks the store manager, Carleen, for Red Dragon Flowerhorns. Carleen begins to pull out fishbowls, rocks and other fish accoutrement. Janis is confused; she wonders why she needs all this fish equipment. "If you're going to be coming in here every couple weeks, you're going to need an excuse," Carleen, the contact for Leda's "opportunity," tells Janis. Carleen explains that she is to continue to do her job at the FBI, and report back to Carleen at the pet store periodically. Back in today, Janis informs Mark that analysis of the photos Frost had with him are from the early Twentieth Century. Further, there are two sets of fingerprints on them: Frost's and Alda's. Alda was nowhere near Frost when she killed him, so she must have touched the photos at some earlier date. Lastly, there was soil indigenous to the Kunar Province of Afghanistan on the photos, as well. Mark is left questioning what Frost would have been doing in Afghanistan.

Speaking of Afghanistan, Aaron sits in an Afghan bar, sipping a drink when he is approached by a man. The man explains he is Wedeck's contact, and that they must leave immediately as Aaron, despite his local dress, doesn't blend into his surroundings as well as he thinks he does. Back in L.A., Janis takes Frost's blueprints to a professor of antiquities, Prof. Corrie. Corrie likens the object detailed in the blueprints to the Antikythera Mechanism, an ancient Greek calculator of sorts, used to determine eclipses. Though likely a similar-type calculator, Corrie cant figure out what the object in the blueprints is designed to calculate. He will keep a copy of the blueprints to make a more detailed determination. Janis leaves the professor's office and goes to the pet store. She gives Carleen a copy of the blueprints, but Carleen wants to know how many other copies there are. Janis explains that she gave a copy to the professor, and there is a copy attached to Mark's Mosaic board. Carleen orders Janis to retrieve both sets immediately. So, Janis returns to Corrie's office in the dead of night. She breaks into his office, grabs the blueprints and installs a device into the wall socket. As she leaves the building, she presses a button an a remote that fires the device and knocks out all of the power in the building. Janis then goes to Mark's office. She removes the blueprints form Mark's board, but when she turns around, Mark is standing there. He wants to know what she is doing. Janis explains that she screwed up: the professor called her saying that he misplaced the original blueprints she gave to him, and needed another copy. She knows she shouldn't have given Corrie the originals, but she just messed up. Mark wonders how she got into his office, to which she replies that she used his passcode. When did he give her his passcode? She answers that when he was in D.C., he called her to ask her to get the Gaier file from his office, and he gave her the passcode then. Mark seems to be warily satisfied, and warns her that this was a rookie mistake. As she is dismissed, she hands over the copy she took from the board.

Olivia, at home with Charlie, pulls out her old photo albums. She searches through them, stopping on a picture from Scott's wedding. Sure enough, the waiter in the picture is Gabriel. She hurriedly flips to a picture from the Pixies concert. Gabriel is there, too! The next morning, Olivia takes the pictures to Vreede. He explains that he's been looking into Raven River, as the name turned up in Mark's side of the case as well. He's found a couple Raven Rivers" one in Illinois, Wisconsin, and an abandoned psychiatric hospital in Arizona. The hospital is notable because it was the first to treat autistic patients. If they treated autism, what about savants, Olivia wonders. Meanwhile, in Afghanistan, Aaron shows the contact a photo of Tracy. The contact asks how Aaron knows she is alive. Aaron just knows; "I saw it," he explains. In Aaron's flash, he also saw a man named Khamir Dejan, a doctor who will lead Aaron to Tracy. The contact asks how they will find Khamir. Aaron shows the contact a symbol from his flash. The contact recognizes it as the symbol for Eyes on the Mountain, a medical non-governmental organization working in he country. They are located in the mountains, so that is where they will head.

Janis sees the neonatal specialist, and has an ultrasound done. The baby's heartbeat and blood-flow are good, but the doctor is concerned with the baby's abdominal girth. Janis needs to get more sleep, and must reduce her stress, lest she lose the pregnancy. Janis returns to the FBI office, only to find Professor Corrie in Mark's office. It seems the professor has some interesting information. The electricity in the building failed, and all of the computer hard drives were wiped out overnight. Moreover, the blueprints were stolen from his office. Fortunately, he had taken pictures of the blueprints on his camera phone. From the calculations and renderings he conducted, he determined that the planned device is designed to calculate dates. So far, the only date he can determine is October 6, 2009, the date of the blackout.

Janis thinks back to that day. She received the call form Mark that he and Demetri were pursuing a blonde terrorist. Wedeck ordered Janis to run the photos of who would turn out to be Alda Herzog through forensics. On her way to the department, the blackout hit, flashing Janis to her doctor's appointment. She is told in her flash that there is a problem with a bleed, but that the baby should be alright. When Janis wakes from the blackout, she is dazed. She stares out the window at the carnage wreaked below her. She vomits in the bathroom, and collapses, crying over what occurred. Janis rushes to the pet store, and tells Carleen that she wants to get out of the conspiracy. She did not sign up for killing millions of people, including her friends and coworkers. Carleen matter-of-factly tells Janis that she can't get out, she's in too deep. Besides, Carleen can't make that decision anyway, Janis would have to talk to the "man in charge," and she will never get that opportunity. Obviously losing this battle, Janis storms out.

This week's installment begins, oddly, with the title card flash (Mark running) instead of any actual action. Then the scene opens on Demetri awakening, sweaty, in a chair with a laser sight trained on his chest. He is a prisoner in an elaborate Saw-style deathtrap. Behind Demetri, on the wall, is an elaborate diagram that looks like a number of timelines, many of which end with pictures of Demetri and the caption "Demetri Dies."

At the FBI, Mark and Wedeck question Charlie about her run-in with Frost. She says she can't remember anything, so Wedeck asks her to close her eyes. She relays their conversation. After a brief discussion about One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish and the heroic qualities of Horton (from Horton Hears a Who), Frost gives her a photo of a painting to give to her father. On the back of the photo are instructions for Mark to go to Union Station at noon if he wants to save Demetri. As Olivia goes to leave the FBI with Charlie, Mark escorts them to the elevator. He tells Olivia that it was nice to see her, to which she can only respond, "Yeah." Wedeck enters, and tells Charlie that the two of them have something in common: they both hate jelly beans. Of course, Charlie loves jelly beans, so Wedeck takes her to his office to get her some. With his daughter out of ear shot, Mark tells Olivia that he thinks Charlie should see a psychologist. Olivia immediately denies the request; Charlie already thinks Mark is going to die, the last thing she needs is to talk about her flash over and over again. The distance between the couple is widening.

Zoey sees Alda Herzog (Hot Blonde Terrorist) at the jail. It's March 15, so she wants to know everything Alda knows about Demetri's impending death. Alda continues to play coy, and when Zoey all but begs for the information, Alda says if Zoey can get her a hearing today, she'll tell her what she knows about Demetri. Zoey protests that there is no way she can get Alda released today. Alda doesn't need to get released -- she just wants a hearing. Back at the FBI, the team is suiting up to head out to Union Station. Vreede informs the team that the photo is actually of the painting "Oedipus and the Sphinx" by Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres. Mark figures there must be some meaning to the painting as Frost places meaning in everything he does. Vreede, reflecting on the story of Oedipus and his attempt to run from his predestined future, wonders if maybe them trying to find Demetri is part of the sequence of events that kills Demetri. Maybe it's a self-fulfilling prophecy. Mark says that he promised Demetri he would save him, so he is willing to take the risk. Where he is being held, Demetri tries to move out of his chair slowly, but as he does, the trap cocks the gun and brings a lever closer to the trigger. Frost enters to warn Demetri not to get up, lest he fulfill his future.

It is now six months prior to the blackout. Alda and Hellinger (one of the conspirators) walk along a row of warehouses. Hellinger explains to Alda that they are to meet with Frost, but she should be warned -- Frost is a bit of a wild card. The conspirators even had to fake his death so he would no longer be tracked. Alda wonders why they put up with Frost's antics. Hellinger replies that Frost's knowledge of quantum physics outpaces everyone, so they need to put up with him. They enter Frost's warehouse to the sight of thousands of dominoes laid out on the floor. Hellinger asks if everything is on schedule. Frost answers in the affirmative, October 6th will be the day of the blackout. Hellinger then asks if the QED is ready. The prototype is, and the others will be completed soon. Frost gestures to a box, which Hellinger opens. Inside is one of the Alpha rings Simon was known to have worn to protect him from the effects of the blackout. Satisfied, Alda and Hellinger leave, but Alda stops, and asks Frost the purpose of the dominoes. Specifically, what did the one strand of white dominoes in a sea of black dominoes represent. Frost explains that the dominoes are his garden, and that the white dominoes plot our his escape.

Back to today, Frost explains Demetri that the diagram on the wall behind Demetri is what Frost likes to call his "Garden of Forking Paths." In a location called Raven River, Frost and his associates conducted thousands of flashforwards on unsuspecting patients. Some were ten minutes into the future, some were ten years, but each time, a different future was seen. The "garden" represents those possible futures; where the paths branch off major events that reoccurred in the flashes are located. For he and Demetri, today, March 15, is the most important. Because it is the date of Demetri's murder, the captive suggests. No, not his murder, but "our" murder. In 78% of the flashes seen, Frost was actually killed by Demetri on March 15. So why not just kill Demetri now, the agent asks. Frost explains that he actually has no desire to kill Demetri, but he has rigged the trap to approximate the future as closely as possible, while still leaving the possibility that the future will be changed, and they both will live. Frost leaves, with Demetri yelling after him to "share what you know!" "All I know, is that in all likelihood, one of us will die today," Frost replies, and exits.

Olivia is finishing up a surgery with Bryce. She asks the anesthesiologist about the anesthesia used. When she replies a different one was used than the one Olivia asked about, Bryce wonders why she's interested in anesthesia that hadn't be used in decades. She tells Bryce that Lloyd had mentioned that it probably was used in the blackout. Lloyd? Olivia is talking to Lloyd again?, Bryce wonders. Olivia dismisses him and quickly leaves the O.R. for her office. Once there, Vreede enters to ask Olivia about the homeless man Frost killed. It seems the victim had a cell phone from which he texted Olivia. At first she can't recall, but then remembers the text she received in October about Mark drinking in his flash. She insists she doesn't know the victim, but agrees to go to the morgue with Vreede to view the body. When she sees the body, Olivia reiterates that she doesn't know the man; she is not related to him. "You are," Vreede offers, "but you just don't know how yet." Before they leave the medical examiner points out that the victim had an overly large hippocampus, a sign that the man was a savant capable of memorization and processing of highly complicated mathematical and scientific equations.

Mark is in Union Station at noon. He is alone in the station, per Frost's instructions, but the rest of the FBI are monitoring from outside. Frost is five minutes late, but eventually a young boy with a backpack walks up to Mark. He tells the agent that a man gave him fifty dollars to give Mark the backpack. Mark looks inside and finds a photo of Demetri in the chair, and a phone. The phone rings. It is Frost. Frost explains that he wants to come in and help Mark prevent the second blackout, but if he is going to do so, Mark needs to follow his instructions exactly. With Janis and the rest of the FBI unable to hear Frost, he tells Mark to only say "Figueroa" and "Pico." Mark does, leading the other agents to think Mark is giving them a hint to Frost and/or Demetri's location (Figueroa and Pico St., oddly, is the intersection for the Staples Center parking lot in L.A.). Further, Frost tells Mark to look on the back of the photo of Demetri. The number there, 423, is the amount of time Mark has to save Demetri, 4 hours and 23 minutes (those numbers look eerily familiar). He then tells Mark to run into the men's bathroom. There, he is to ditch the cell phone and his gun, grab an access card, and exit out an access panel in the wall. With Janis and the rest of the FBI in pursuit, Mark makes it to a car with another cell phone inside. The phone rings as soon as Mark gets in. It's Frost, who gives Mark directions to the rendezvous point.

By faking appendicitis, Zoey is able to secure an emergency hearing for Alda. Zoey and some federal agents walk Alda to the courtroom. As she walks down the hall, Alda spies a window-washer outside. During the hearing, Zoey argues that Alda's appendicitis requires her immediate release into a hospital to deal with the ailment. The judge lambastes Zoey for wasting the court's time with fake complaints of medical emergencies, and threatens Zoey with legal sanctions. Zoey's motion is denied. She apologizes to Alda and pleads with her for information about Demetri's whereabouts. Alda admits to now knowing much, except for the mention of Demetri's body being found in "Building 7" in her flash. As Alda is escorted out of the courtroom by federal agents, a large window explodes, sending those in the room ducking for cover; all except Alda. She breaks for the window and jumps out. Hot Blonde Terrorist has escaped.

Hopefully, if you're reading this, you're just as enthusiastic about the small screen as we are. And, if you're anything like we are, you absolutely hate not having anything to watch.

That's why we've decided to create a new, weekly article series titled Watch This! These articles will be exactly what they sound like: they'll be suggesting what you should watch over the coming week (Monday through Sunday). If you're having trouble deciding on which show to watch (or simply don't have anything to watch at all), let us suggest to you what you should be tuning into.

Here's how these articles will work: each page will be from the perspective of a different contributor to TVOvermind. On that page, each of us will detail the one series that we think is worthy of your attention for that week. We'll give you some reasons why, tell you where and when that episode will air, and leave the rest entirely in your hands.

This week's episode of FlashForward, "Let No Man Put Asunder," opens two years before the blackout. Mark welcomes the new FBI agents, including Demetri, Janis, Al(!), and Marcy, to the force. He tells them that they will be asked to make sacrifices, often anonymously, but that they will always do the right thing. Every time. The new recruits are given their partner assignments. Demetri is assigned to Vreede, while Al gets Benford. Demetri begs Al to switch so he can work with the "legend," Mark. Al relents to the request. Janis tells them that she's been assigned to intelligence, and Marcy has to report to Janis, even though she scored higher than Janis in their agency exams. Her fellow newbies tell her that she shouldn't worry about her position, she's the smartest one of all of them, and that they know she'll do something special in the department one day.

Cut to Marcy's interrogation by Mark and Demetri. Demetri immediately peppers her with questions. Who came after them in the garage in Washington, D.C.? Are they still in danger? Did the people she works kill Ian McKinnon? Marcy only replies, "I don't know." Demetri starts getting very hot, so Mark ushers him out of the room. He knows that Demetri is supposed to die in three days, but he needs to maintain his composure. Janis walks by, so Mark asks for her help in the interrogation room. She is reluctant, but agrees. In the room, she asks Marcy how she came to join the other side and what her duties are. Marcy answers that three months before the blackout, she was approached by a man to be part of something big. She was responsible for conducting dead drops of information on the Mosaic case. When Janis and Mark express their confusion over why she would betray the FBI, Marcy then tells them about her flash. She saw herself incarcerated, but she was happier then ever before. She was holding the name of the man who recruited her so she could cut a deal on her prison sentence. Further, she finally felt important. Wedeck enters the room and pulls Mark out to talk. Some federal agents are there to take Marcy back to, presumably, D.C. Mark asks for one more day to interrogate his former colleague, but the next thing he knows, Marcy is being led out of the building. Wedeck orders the team to refocus on finding Frost. But Mark has to look into something else: Mark'ss gun was used in a murder the previous night.

Mark and Demtri go to the homeless shelter where the murder took place. Demetri recounts what they know: a 55-yr old homeless man was asleep when a man walked in, hovered over him, and shot the man. A couple others overheard the ordeal, and heard the victim say, "I knew it would be you, but I didn't want to believe it." They also saw the killer leave in an early 70's sedan. Mark wonders who was known to have handled his gun. Demetri says all of those people were cleared previously. But what about Marcy, Mark adds. The partners run to the airport where Marcy is about to get on a plane back to D.C. They ask her who has Mark's gun, but she replies she doesn't know (does she know anything?!?) She would call a phone number that changed every time she had to call to get her instructions. All she ever heard was that Demetri is to be killed on March 15th.

At a park near their house, Charlie leads Olivia hurriedly toward the playground. She told someone they wouldn't be late. Who is the someone? Why, it's Dylan and Lloyd. Recognizing the awkward situation, Lloyd offers to go to the other side of the park, but Olivia stops him. They are adults and can handle it. They hear Charlie yelp and run over. She and Dylan had accidentally bumped heads and now Charlie's lip is bleeding. Charlie is concerned that she won't be able to go to the carnival that night. Olivia assures her daughter that they'll make it to the carnival, and as she looks at the injury, Lloyd tells the little girl to squeeze his hand if the pain is too much. He playfully teases her that she can squeeze harder, and he mollifies the child, to Olivia's appreciation.

Wedeck, having received a call to come to the airport after Marcy was led away, arrives at the wheels of Air Force 2. Vice President (formerly Senator) Clemente, long time opponent of Wedeck, has called the FBI director for a conversation important enough that she flew all the way across the country for it. She received information that Jericho has recently tripled the security around its compound. Knowing that mark had previously looked into Jericho, she wants Wedeck to continue the investigation. He says that is a job for the NSA, but the Vice President very specifically does not want the NSA involved. Nor does she want President Segovia to know about the investigation. Wedeck recoils (as much as Wedeck ever reacts to anything), saying he has known Segovia for decades; there is no way he could be involved in anything. VP Clemente reminds him that in her flash Jericho had done something wrong, and further, she was President. Whether Wedeck likes it or not, President Segovia is going down. Wedeck can either "be out with the old, or in with the new." Wedeck returns to the FBI and asks Mark about why he was looking into Jericho. Mark tells his boss that a friend was concerned about the safety of his daughter. Wedeck asks if whether he could talk to Mark's friend. If he can find Aaron, Wedeck is free to talk to him. Demetri runs in and tells the men that a gunman, driving an early 70's sedan has just taken hostages in an office building nearby. They rush off to the scene.

Demetri and Mark enter the building and find the gunman with a hostage on the second floor. Mark tries to take the lead, but Demetri moves before Mark can. The gunman tells Demetri to stay where he is or he will kill the woman he is holding. He wants to talk to Randy Savage (Ooohhhhhhhhh Yeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaahhhhh!!!!) Demetri drops his gun, extra clip and ankle gun, and moves toward the gunman, trying to talk him down. He knows the guy is scared, and specifically, scared to die. Demetri is scared. So is the hostage. One's judgment is impaired when one is scared. Bad choices are made. The gunman has a chance to make a good decision, to save his life, by giving Demetri the gun. The guy pushes the hostage away, and Demetri quickly grabs for his back. In one motion, Demetri draws a hidden gun and shoots the man in the shoulder. The gunman drops to the floor, and releases his gun. It's not Mark's gun. Mark tells Demetri that he risked his life for nothing. Demetri saved the woman, but why did he rush into the fight with the guy? Demetri responds that the wanted to ask the shooter why he was going to kill Demetri. He reminds Mark of the speech he gave when Demetri joined the force; about being the person relied upon to do the right thing. Demetri has had a hard time doing that since the blackout, and he needs Mark's help to get back to that. Mark acknowledges his own deficiencies in that area, but, of course, he will help Demetri. In fact, he suggests that Demetri get away from L.A. It's not running away, as Demetri fears, but rather being smart. He and Zoey should go someplace safe.

Demetri flashes to two years before the blackout, and he is on the witness stand. Zoey, a criminal defense attorney, grills Demetri over the contents of his incident report. After she eviscerates him, he approaches her in the hall outside the courtroom, saying it was unfair how she treated him. Are they dating yet? Obviously not based on Demetri's response to Zoey asking him out for dinner to make up for her interrogation, "There's no chance in hell I'd ever go out with you." Cut to present day. Demetri enters and greets his "beautiful" fiance. He tells her about how all of the tiny decisions one makes eventually lead to something good. If he never asked Al to switch partners on their first day, he wouldn't have been at the scene he testified about, and never would have met her. He asks her to marry him, much to Zoey's confusion as they had already had that conversation. No, he wants to do it immediately, and then go to Hawaii until March 15th, or April 29th, or maybe forever. "Hell yes!" is Zoey's perfect response.

"Peter" only managed to score 5.83 million viewers, with a 2.3 rating in the all-important 18-49 rating. That's kind of paltry when compared to earlier episodes of the season. January's "The Bishop Revival" got much higher ratings than that.

However, last night's Fringe showed a slight rebound that we can attribute to the fact that "Peter" was a return from a very long hiatus. "Olivia. In the Lab. With the Revolver" received 6.46 million viewers (though, oddly enough, the 18-49 rating stayed the same). This rebound is slight, but it does mean that there is hope for the series to make at least a partial recovery from the hiatus-induced ratings hemorrhage.

Meanwhile, FlashForward wasn't so lucky. Despite last night's episode "Queen Sacrifice" having several huge revelations and a great twist, the episode only improved menially, with 5.44 million viewers. That's only .4 million viewers greater than the ratings for last week's "Better Angels" which hit a series low with 5.04 million. However, it does at least reverse the downward trend of viewership that FlashForward has been undergoing this year. "Queen Sacrifice" also added a tenth of an 18-49 ratings point to last week's episode, scoring a 1.7. This is a far cry from FlashForward's 12.47 million viewer premiere.

Though Fringe is safe for a third season, things aren't looking so good for FlashForward's second. However, this slight ratings gain could perhaps help ABC choose to wait and see whether the show's ratings improve any more before giving the show the final axe. Online and foreign viewership of the series will also be taken into account by the network, and those are the only reasons why this show has any chance at all of clinging on to any hope of a second year.

This week's episode of FlashForward begins three years before the blackout. In the hospital, Olivia tends to Mark, who has received a gun shot wound to the chest. She tells him that she can't handle the stress and danger of Mark's job; now with a daughter, she needs to know the family comes first for him. Mark tells her that Director Wedeck just asked him to join the terrorism task force, meaning more burritos on surveillance, and fewer bullets to the chest. Further, he promises that his family will always come first. Flash to today, and Olivia is walking Mark out to his car. Mark will be staying at Wedeck's house for the time being. Olivia doesn't know what to say -- she's never separated from a husband before. Seeing Charlie clutching Squirrelio in the back seat of the car, Olivia tells Mark that she's been in the car for twenty minutes. Mark gets in the back seat and tries to assure his daughter that he'll only be gone for a little while. She gives him a string bracelet like the one he burned back in the fall in an attempt to avoid his flash. Saying it will protect him from the bad guys while he's away, she ties it around his wrist. Mark doesn't have the heart to remove it.

At the FBI, Mark, Demetri and Wedeck watch the Frost tape found in the tower in Somalia. The 1991 Frost mentions both the October blackout and the Pigeon, UT incident, as well as the fact that he's been through hundreds of flash forwards. He continues, telling them that no matter his flash, he dies on March 15, 2010, the same day as Demetri. He concludes saying the next move in the game is Mark Benford's. Mark wonders if the video is a warning to try to change the future seen in the flashes, and prevent a second blackout. Elsewhere at the FBI, Simon and Lloyd are working on the materials brought back from Somalia. While Simon is amazed that the technology he designed in 1992, Lloyd is more concerned with the documents found, and their references to dark matter -- an unknown quantity back in 1991. Simon is only half listening; he's happy that they are now off the hook for the blackout as Frost was having flash forwards in 1991, a year before he designed the towers. Lloyd reminds him that they were told they amplified the blackout, so they are still somewhat responsible. He continues, telling Simon about the formula he saw on the mirror in his flash. There were two parts, but he can only remember one half. Lloyd notes that what he can decipher looks like an inverse of the formulas he and Simon used at NLAP for their experiment that amplified the blackout. It seems Lloyd and Mark were working on a "vaccine" of sorts for the blackout.

In Mark's office, Mark informs Demetri of something he found regarding Frost. Right before Frost disappeared, he defeated the number one chess player in the world, Ian McKinnon. Mark notices that in Frost's three games against McKinnon, each of Frost's moves were made in exactly two or four seconds, and there were a total of fifty moves. Demetri surmises that the pattern is Morse code. Further, as Mark notes, numbers are represented by five dots are dashes. Fifty moves, divided by five symbols per number, equals ten numbers. Phone numbers have ten numbers. Mark deciphers the code and calls the resulting phone number. The outgoing message is from Frost, congratulating the caller for figuring out the code and nothing more. The partners agree to go try to find McKinnon in San Francisco as he was the last person to have contact with Frost.

Keiko (where has she been) is dining at the sushi restaurant she enters in her flash forward. Each time the front door opens, she eagerly turns her gaze upon it, hoping it is the man she saw in her flash. The waitress asks (in English as Keiko insists) if she wants something to eat, but Keiko doesn't have much money. The waitress asks her if she wants to work as a waitress (in cash, of course, because Keiko doesn't have a work visa), but she demurs, saying she is there for a new beginning, at that beginning doesn't include working as a waitress. Meanwhile, her intended love, Bryce, is in the hospital receiving his chemotherapy treatment under the watchful eye of Nicole. He insists that she doesn't need to stay with him, but she calls him out on his pride. He admits to the "sin," and, as Bryce will feel terrible the next day due to the treatment, agrees to go out with Nicole that night.

Mark and Demetri go to one of San Francisco's chess parks. There, they find a crime scene. Someone beat them to McKinnon, as he was found with two shots to the back of the head. Back in L.A., Mark tells Vogel about McKinnon. Vogel notes that the amount of time between Mark's discovery and McKinnon's death was only eight hours, so the mole in the FBI must have tipped off the bad guys yet again. They need to find the mole immediately, so Mark offers to find him. Vogel brings in a group of CIA agents to secure anyone working on Mosaic in the conference room. The CIA agents also scour the office for bugs or other electronic devices, including Mark's office. Under the "M" key, a CIA tech finds a bug. Vogel asks Mark who has access to his office; Mark replies; everyone in the conference room. Demetri is questioned first, and is rather indignant over that fact. Of course Mark doesn't think Demetri is the mole, but he needs the actual mole to believe he suspects everyone. Back in the room, Agent Seth MacFarlane worries that the investigators might find something on his computer. Porn? wonders Simon. No, actually a role-playing game: he's a seventh level druid with Lightning Hammer abilities, so he doesn't want it taken off the computer. Mark enters and calls Vreede in for questioning. Marcy, another agent, wonders whether they are all really under suspicion. Mark throws the "M" key onto the table, which Simon picks up. "'M' for Mark. Nice touch," he comments.

Keiko has left the sushi restaurant and walks down the sidewalk, stopping at a lot where guys are making their cars bounce. The former robotics engineer is amazed by what she sees. She finds a mechanic working underneath a car and asks what he is doing. He is trying to fix his car to bounce as well. Hydraulics or nitrogen boosters, Keiko wonders. Hydraulics, the mechanic, Emil Gutierrez, answers. Keiko explains that she knows how to make them work and asks for the wrench. Impressed and intrigued, Emil hands over the tool as Keiko slides under the car.

Janis is the next into the hot seat, noting that the interrogation is severely screwing with her trust issues. Mark and Vogel note that she has missed thirteen days of work in the last couple months, where she had only missed two in the previous years. They know that in her flash she was pregnant, so she's been visiting a fertility clinic. Yes, they do know that, but that was only eight of the thirteen days. What about the other five? Janis finally admits that she as checking up on some of her co-workers. She found that Marcy has a half-brother who is deathly ill in St. Louis. Further, she received an anonymous $50,000 credit to her bank account just prior to the blackout. They thank Janis for the information, and she is dismissed.
