The word on the street is that the Terra Nova pilot is expensive. Like LOST pilot expensive, and maybe even more than that. The trailer that just aired during Super Bowl XLV displays a show on a very grandiose scale, but what do you expect from something produced by Steven Spielberg?
Terra Nova will be taking a page out of Glee's book. FOX will actually air the premiere in May 2010 to give viewers a sneak peek at the new series. The show will then formally debut in the fall of 2011. For those of you who are unfamiliar with the premise of the show, here's a few details for you:
Terra Nova focuses on a family living in 2149. Humankind has pushed Earth to the bring of destruction. Plants and animals are nearly extinct and the planet is overcrowded. Scientists at the FERMI Particle Accelerator discovered a crack in time that allows them to create a time portal to the very distant past. The time of dinosaurs, to be precise. In order to save mankind, the scientists come up with the plan to resettle humans in the past and give them another chance to rebuild civilization.
When scientists at the FERMI Particle Accelerator unexpectedly discovered a fracture in time that made it possible to construct a portal into primeval history, the bold notion was born to resettle humanity in the past – a second chance to rebuild civilization and get it right this time.
The Shannon family, headed up by Jim and his wife Elisabeth, are part of the tenth trip of settlers to Terra Nova, the colony created in the distant past. Elisabeth is a trauma surgeon, and, in addition to her husband, she is joined by her 17 year old son, Josh, 15 year old daughter Maddy, and 5 year old daughter Zoe. Of course, each family member is plagued with their own baggage. Jim is a man with a checkered past, Josh is angry to leave behind his life, Maddy is awkward and looking for a new identity, and there's a secret involving Zoe that threatens the family's place in this new world.
Stephen Lang - one of the stars of James Cameron's Avatar - will be playing Commander Nathaniel Taylor, one of the first settlers of Terra Nova, as well as its leader. He and his right-hand man Guzman, are sure to tell the other settlers about the dangers of living in the past. Taylor also has to contend with Mira, the leader of a group of renegade settlers, who oppose Taylor.
Even more threatening than what lies outside the protective walls of the colony is the chilling possibility that something sinister is happening inside Terra Nova. The Shannons will come to suspect that not everyone on this mission has the same idea of how to best save mankind; in fact, there may be forces intent on destroying this new world before it even begins.
Terra Nova will be premiering as a two-night special event, on Monday, May 23 and Tuesday, May 24 on FOX.
Note: If you live outside of the U.S. you may not be able to watch the trailer embedded below. In which case, you should be able to watch it here.

"Primeval" with a much larger budget? "Primeval Meets Earth 2" maybe?
I think this guy has an interesting view on the Terra Nova plot:
