Sometimes I think the reality TV gods like to see me suffer and just when I think I may have a grasp on things, they pull the rug right out from under me. The season finale of The Amazing Race: Unfinished Business proved just that as the admittedly exciting two hour finish to the venerable CBS reality show's 18th season was exactly the opposite of what I originally predicted.
The champions of this season are sisters Kisha & Jen, themselves removed from a heartbreaking 2nd place finish in season 14. Though I respected their steadiness and their athleticism, I couldn't envision them making a big enough move to get to the front of the pack and stay there, especially since they were the only team in the final four who hadn't won a leg entering the finale. Guess I was wrong.
The sisters spent much of the finale battling it out with the Globetrotters and the team of Flight Time & Big Easy settled for a spot in second place. It was their lack of eye for details that did the two friends in, a problem that they've dealt with during both of their seasons on The Amazing Race, as Kisha & Jen pulled ahead during the last roadblock and held their lead from then on. 3rd place went to Gary & Mallory, mostly due to cab driver difficulties and getting too far behind two fairly efficient teams. The same time problem plagued Zev & Justin who bid adieu to the race for the second time at the midway point of the finale, landing in 4th place.
While the finale was a great watch because of just how close the top two teams were (there was some nifty camera work to show this), I'm not a huge fan of Kisha & Jen as being the winners for this season. I don't think they're a great team and they've been shown so little this season that it's hard for someone who didn't watch their season to really get behind them. They tended to stay in the pack this season and they had never impressed me with any of their skillset; I can't help but think if there were no alliances during this season of the The Amazing Race, Kisha & Jen may not have been the winners we would have gotten. But what's done is done and congrats to Kisha & Jen for outwitting, outlasting, and outplaying the rest of the returning teams this season. Those swimming lessons sure paid off.
See you in the fall for a crop of newbies!
