The Closer May Return For New Season

The only thing better than a blind item is a solved blind item. As much as I love scouring the internet for new gossip and things that don’t have anything to do with me personally, sometimes it feels a little fruitless since a majority of blind items can’t be revealed due to legal concerns.

Thankfully, some people seem to share my love for revealing gossip, as TV Guide reports (by way of TVLine.com) that The Closer isn’t dead yet. Not that long ago, there was a blind item about a drama that was supposed to be ending that had buzz of a possible new season, which a lot of people seemed to think was Smallville. But you ask: how can such a lead character-driven show like The Closer continue without their lead character?

TV Guide reports that the producers are considering shifting the focus of the show to a new lead character (I'd assume they may bring in a big name) or starting a spin-off (they’d “promote” one of the members of the supporting cast), but there’s nothing set in stone as of yet.

As much as I don’t wish ill on anybody’s show, I don’t know if this is a smart idea. I understand that The Closer is still pulling amazing ratings (it provided a great lead in for Rizzoli & Isles) and that reviews are still just as strong, but I personally think it’s better to leave one year too soon than to stay one year too late and have nobody miss you when you leave. Obviously, I don’t know that the show would take such a dramatic swan dive in quality as to bring this into reality; this may be just the shot of creativity that the TNT procedural needs to last another 2-3 years. It just leaves me feeling a bit pessimistic, is all.

What do you think about the possibility of another season of The Closer? Do you think it can survive without Kyra Sedgwick?
