The Deep End was a day late from becoming the first new show of 2010 to be cancelled. Instead, that honor went to FOX's Past Life, which bit the proverbial bullet due to low ratings. A similar fate has afflicted ABC's attempt at Grey's Anatomy with lawyers.
The series began on January 21 with only 7 million viewers; not a strong debut by any stretch of the imagination. It didn't quite lose viewers as quickly as Past Life did, and only dropped a million with its second episode. By episode three, the series had dropped another million viewers, and things just weren't looking good for a second season, or even a full first season, despite a slight gain in viewers for the first episode. Episode five's drop to an embarassing 4.26 million sealed The Deep End's fate, and ABC quickly cancelled the series, which had steadily been named the fourth most watched series in its Thursday timeslot.
For those of you wanting closure for the attorneys at Sterling, Huddle, Oppenheim, & Craft, you're unfortunately out of luck. Unlike Past Life, ABC has not announced intentions to burn off the rest of the series at a later date. Instead, next week's episode, "White Lies, Black Ties," will be the series finale, bringing The Deep End's episode count to six. The finale will air February 25.
In the meantime, what do you think will be dropped next? It's a good possibility that ABC will nix two more shows before long. Scrubs, a half-hour medical sitcom that recently underwent a drastic change in characters and setting for its ninth season, has been looked at for cancellation for a while, with each episode garnering around three million viewers. Sophomore comedy Better Off Ted, while critically lauded, is being considered "on the bubble," despite having kept ratings on par with its first season, if not a little higher.

ABC had already announced in the beginning that only six of the seven episodes were to air to begin with because of FlashForward. And even with the move of the premiere date it was still to be the case, so technically the network did not cancel but end the series. Check the facts. Did you get confirmation by ABC of a official cancellation?
^^ This is correct. ABC cut the episode order twice on the series. Ultimately only 7 were filmed. It had no chance to begin with.

OK, this just stinks. The Deep End was on its way to doing for courtroom drama what Grey's did for medical drama. Likeable character as newbies being thrown in with the sharks. Too bad.
ABC disgusts me!! What kind of morons do they have deciding which shows to cut?? I mean complete idiots!! Cancel this show and keep CRAP SHOWS LIKE UGLY BETTY, and not to mention their SAD ATTEMPT at competing with CBS's reality tv shows I am sorry but Shark Tank, Shaq vs, Wife Swap, and Wipe out CAN NOT AND WILL NOT EVER EVER hold a match up to Big Brother, Survivor, or Amazing Race. So what they need to concentrate on is pulling their heads out of their arses and figure out what shows are really dragging them down and where they are losing to the competition.

I'm through investing my time in television. Everytime I sit down and watch something and I like it……it winds up getting cancelled. Deep End was a guilty pleasure and the storylines interesting. Can't say the same for the reality crap they shove down our throats on a daily basis….
It's unfortunate, especially when we look back at other successful shows that took up to 2 full seasons for viewers to really latch on. ABC is not making the best choices on when and how to cut its new shows. Here's hoping they bring Deep End and other good shows back :(
and another show bites the dust. if they wanted to get some results they should have given some more time for development as well as the time slot to compete. lets be honest not everyone is home on thurseday nights, not to mention the assortment of college kids in my school alone (not to mention those who do the same) who watch this show, have to enjoy such entertainment via hulu due to not having the time or the tv for that matter to watch it, and if the size of the school is the question just look up the population of D1 internationally recongnized Texas A&M University and then talk. But i am just a viewer who is actually entertained by the shows i watch that doesn't have some reality compition of running around the world or saving fat people from their own inability to get into shape unless they win something. I am really tired of the same shit over and over……….shows like friends, sienfeld, er they are a dime a dozen so not every show is going to be a slam, but I guess with what they do keep on tv its just a huge remider of the calibur of people who nestle thier ass's on a sofa and enjoy shit that envolves teenage vampires, aliens who take over New York …….again, fat (i call it what it is) people to lazy to do it themselves, some doctor(s) curing something for the umptenth time while suffering form some personal anguish or vice and cheating on thier significant other……….blah blah blah, etc etc etc. But what do I know, I am just a critic right?
How do stations know whether or not fans are recording it on their DVR's? Just because they might not be watching live doesn't mean they aren't watching it at all.

In all honesty, ABC is too quick to pull plugs. They put shows on the air to spark peoples imaginations with in depth plots and involved characters. This is not the first show they have canceled that leaves me wondering… Cashmere Mafia, Eli Stone ring a bell as well. I honestly dont think I will watch ABC programming any longer. If I decide to watch anything it will be online and away from their advertising propaganda.

I really like The Deep End. It was smart, funny with fashion and eye candy. I never missed an episode on line. What a shame it was a good show. And they are keeping "Scrubs" which should have been canceled long ago? It's a crazy mixed up world.

Any first-year law student would tell you…this show sucked. The plots were so underdeveloped, it became a game to see which ethical violation would be the object of the next show. Better writers may have saved it.

I am a 38 male, I and I really enjoyed this show, what a shame I finally found a non reality show that I enjoyed. It had a great cast and mega funny to watch. ABC should give it another chance with perhaps better advertising, I just happened to stummble upon it… U suck ABC
I am very disappointed that this show has been cancelled. I think Abc should have given it another chance do to the fact that it was airing the same time as the Olympics.
The low ratings were due to the OLYMPIC coverage conflicting with this show. That was unfair competition. No other new show could compete with the Olympics either. I bet if the show were released now, it would do great! Please don't cancel The Deep End!

The Deep End was an all around entertaining show. It had some of the nicest looking cast members. ABC seems to have the edge on stupidity when comes to cancelling promising new shows.
ABC is really frustrating me every show they put on that I like it gets cancelled. I am going to start boycotting any new show ABC puts on because I know it will be cancelled.
Another reason why I never watch ABC! they have the worst TV Shows and when they get a good one, they cancel it — That's why USA, TNT and other cable stations do so much better.

as a top 20 first year law student, I'll say the show was great. Not a practical view of a lawyer's job, but then, really, who wants to see 80 hours of research and writing? I loved the characters, the plot, the fact that lawyers had GOOD publicity for once. A better networking with advertising skills might have saved it.
The Deep End was possibly the worst legal tv show in history. In fact, this show was so bad that it was good. I couldn't help but watch and see what inane legal conundrum the show would come up with every week or how the wet behind the ears first year attorneys solve the case. Each week I thought I was watching an episode of Scooby Doo meets Ally McBeal and secretly hope that at the end of one episode someone will shout "and I would've gotten away with it, if not for those darn kids!!!" I don't know whether to thank or curse NBC for denying me the gut wrenching experience of watching this show in the future.
I am extremely disappointed that the Freshmen show "The Deep End" has been cancelled. This show was perfect in its timeslot, and had a GREAT cast. It was funny and had great story lines. PLEASE bring it back. This show deserves another chance. I for one thought it was the perfect line-up for a Thursday evening.
I wish they had given this show another chance. It reminded me of a younger Boston Legal. It was witty and very good. I think that the actors did an amazing job and I really looked forward to watching this show each week. I came on here to find out when the season started again. Shame on you ABC. Saaad….I looked forward to watching The Deep End every week! The characters were real, and likeable. Such a shame…just because you don't have 10 million viewers doesn't mean it isn't a good show. Thumbs down ABC.
