Looks like the team behind The Following will be following yet another new showrunner for season three.
Jennifer Johnson, who took over for Kevin Williamson after he left the series less than three months ago, will be stepping down from her duties as showrunner for the Fox thriller, according to Deadline. Replacing Johnson for season three will be the team of Brett Mahoney and Alexi Hawley, writers for The Following who will now co-run the series together with director and executive producer Marcos Siega.
Reportedly, Johnson, who has served as a producer on numerous series such as Lost, Gang Related, and three other Fox series, Touch, Alcatraz, and Reunion, will be remaining at Warner Bros. Television to focus on development, while Williamson will be running his new CBS series Stalker, starring Maggie Q and Dylan McDermott. Mahoney, Hawley, and Siega’s past TV credits include Castle, The Vampire Diaries, and Eli Stone.
At Comic-Con, Johnson promised that season three of The Following would present “a brand new threat for New York,” causing “urban paranoia” and “disintegration” of the city.
“The characters’ home lives will be a microcosm of that,” Johnson told critics and fans, before stating they would “challenge” Ryan’s newfound happiness with new series regular Zuleikha Robinson, who will be playing his new girlfriend Gwen, “episode after episode. Can he hold on to the happiness that he has found?”
Additionally, Johnson said that there would be a “bigger, badder villain” in season three, which will be “a little more Hitchcockian, a little more of what you don’t see.”
The Following returns for its third season at midseason on Fox.
