Stephen Colbert Grades Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton’s Debate Performances on The Late Show

Stephen Colbert

Stephen Colbert and The Late Show were live last night after the first presidential debate between Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton and Republican candidate Donald Trump. Anyone who watched Colbert as he went live during both the Republican and Democratic National Conventions knows that he’s at best on The Late Show when he’s able to talk politics right as they happen, so expectations were pretty high for him last night following the debate. Did Colbert reach the same comedic heights last night that he did during the conventions? That’s up to you to decide, but there’s no denying that his breakdown of the debate, as he judged both Trump and Clinton’s performances during it, was fantastic.

Colbert recapped all the major highlights from Monday night’s debate. He even touched upon how people were feeling before the big event, joking that “Democrats haven’t been this nervous since Anthony Weiner asked to borrow their phone,” and how the candidates themselves prepared, with Hillary Clinton doing several mock debates beforehand, while Donald Trump reportedly sat down with friends, eating food and testing out zingers.

“And [Donald Trump] may not have prepared, but it also looked like he didn’t,” Colbert said. “Meanwhile, Hillary was so prepared that my new nickname for her is Preparation H. It’s a compliment. In the primaries, she already proved she can soothe the Bern.”

Then Colbert moved onto some of the more memorable moments from the debate itself, such as when Donald Trump straight-up lied about his stance on climate change (there’s a post from his Twitter that proves he was lying) and when he continually mentioned “law and order” during the candidates’ discussion about race relations in America (and no, Trump unfortunately wasn’t talking about the beloved show). Plus, there was all that sniffling from the Republican candidate, which, according to Colbert, made Trump sound like “the coked-up best man in the bathroom at a wedding.”

“He was like Scarface, but you know, with the…more face,” Colbert joked about Trump.
