The Newsroom Picked Up For Its Third and Final Season

It’s strange, all this time I was operating under the assumption that of course HBO had renewed The Newsroom after season two ended, but four months later, and the news is just now official. With it comes the revelation that the third season of the show will be its last.

I’m not sure what took so long, or why the third season is going to end things, but I can make some assumptions. Though the show is good, the concept is sort of constrained by current events. Not to say there aren’t breaking news stories happening every day worth covering, but The Newsroom actually had to invent their own crises last season just to have something interesting to base the season around.

I have no problem with a good show setting an end date, as that means it will be able to finish up on its own terms. Three seasons is pretty short for a show, and I will miss it, but Sorkin is a busy guy, and it’s probably better the show ends than him passing it off to someone else. Sorkin is also working on a Steve Jobs biopic for Sony, as we’re apparently just ignoring the one Ashton Kutcher made.

What do you make of this news?
