NBC's The Office returns tonight for its eigth season. Of course, the big news is that Office star Steve Carell left towards the end of the seventh season and now the staff needs a new boss.
The departure of regional manager Michael Scott (Carrell) after 19 years of service was coupled with the unexpected medical lead of his successor, DeAngelo Vickers (guest star Will Ferrell). Now many people are vying for the coveted management position, including some internal candidates at the local Dunder Mifflin office. During the interview process, Dunder Mifflin-Sabre CEO Jo Bennett (guest star Kathy Bates) hired Robert California (James Spader). But Robert wasn't happy just being the regional manager and he convinced Jo Bennett to step down and make him the new CEO. Spader's Robert California has now joined the cast as a regular character.
In tonight's season 8 premiere, the staff members at Dunder Mifflin will discover a list of their names in one of Robert's notebook and this triggers a rash of speculation as to the meaning of the list.
