TV Guide is reporting that R&B musician Raphael Saadiq has signed on to play the legendary Sam Cooke in an episode of NBC's The Playboy Club. Saadiq will make his appearance in October and is set to perform Cooke's top 20 pop hit "Having a Party".
The veteran musician is the latest to sign on to the period drama, as Colbie Caillat recently booked an appearance as "It's My Party" songstress Lesley Gore. Word is that the show is looking to feature actors playing Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis, Jr. in episodes later this season.
Saadiq, most known for his role in '90s R&B supergroup Tony! Toni! Tone!, has carved out a successful solo career for himself with his Motown-inspired grooves and boundless energy. He most recently released Stone Rollin' this past May.
The Playboy Club will tell the story of the first Playboy Club in Chicago and the bunnies that worked there. It stars Amber Heard (Zombieland), Eddie Cibrian (Third Watch), and Naturi Naughton (Notorious), and will premiere Monday, September 19th at 10:00.
What other 60s performers/icons do you want to see portrayed on The Playboy Club? How do you think Saadiq will embody Sam Cooke during his episode? Do you think you'll be checking out The Playboy Club when it debuts later this month?
