There are a few midseason shows that are definitely worth your time and ABC's The River is one of them. It plays like a combination of a horror movie and The Blair Witch Project. And while you might be thinking to yourself "I'm not that interested in yet another documentary-style scary show", I assure you that The River is worth the hype. It blends bone-chilling moments with an interesting mystery.
The River focuses primarily on a family, led by Bruce Greenwood's character, Dr. Emmet Cole. Six months, ago, Cole - a famed television explorer - disappeared. With no leads, his wife, Tess, and his son, Lincoln, believed him to be dead somewhere in the Amazon. Unexpectedly, Cole's location beacon signal lights up one day and Tess assembles a team, including Lincoln, to travel to the Amazon in hopes that Cole can be found alive.
While the group does find Cole's famous ship, the Magus, the boat is abandoned. But since the barge is equipped with cameras used to film Cole's television show, the group is able to get some idea of what happened on the ship. The questions come fast: where did the crew disappear to? Is there something strange and unnatural buried in the Amazonian jungle that is haunting the ship?
The atmosphere of The River is bang-on: the whole show looks and feels confined, dark, dank and creepy. ABC took this to heart when it created a new, interactive website for the show called Explore The River. The site allows fans to explore different parts of the Magus ship (and the surrounding jungle area where the ship was abandoned). Clicking on certain "hotspots" will reveal video footage from the show.
This is a fun website - and show - that is definitely worth your time. The River premieres on Tuesday, February 7 with a two-hour episode beginning at 9:00 p.m. EST on ABC.
