It happened again last night. A feeling I have not gotten from TV in a long time. I feeling I used to get when I would watch The Simpsons. A sense of joy and wonder and awe that would fill me as a child. It came back last night while I watched the Lego Simpsons episode. Not only was it brilliant, well-written, and self-aware, but it was also a fun and funny ride through Springfield that was unlike any episode that ever came before it. This episode was like golden age Simpsons at its finest. Only with the awesome addition of Legos.
As many of you already know, the success of the Lego Movie has ushered in a new apprecation for all things Lego. This led to the Simpsons deciding they would have a whole episode pretty much done Lego style. But instead of letting that be the gimmick in itself, they incorporated Lego’s themselves into a sweet subplot of how Homer wanted himself in that Lego world because in that world, no one could get hurt and everything is perfect. Seems VERY similar to the GI-Joe themed Community episode from just a few weeks ago, as a matter of fact.
Today, everyone seems to be talking about all the awesome Easter Eggs that were hidden around the show. My favorite was when you could clearly see the two main characters from The Lego Movie going by in the background of one of the final shots. It was a nice little nod to the guys who helped make these things cool again.
Overall, it was a brilliantly written and perfectly executed episode of a show that has existed for this long for a reason. Because, as last night proves, the Simpsons are in a league of their own.
