The Vampire Diaires Returning To The Books

The Vampire Diaries will be less ‘loosely based’ on the original novels in the future, according to Executive Producer Julie Plec. Fans of The Vampire Diaries novels have been pretty vocal about the differences between the novels, written by L.J. Smith, and the series. The first season of The Vampire Diaries was a wide departure from the books, and fans took notice. According to Plec, it was all done in the name of creating good TV.

“The deeper we get into the series, ironically, the more we're going to be taking from the books," Plec told TV Guide. "That's cool because we strayed so far so quickly, just by definition of trying to shape a good story in the right way for television."

Not everyone has bemoaned the differences though. As the fan of a new television series based on an established mythology, it’s always a bit annoying to be spoiled by some book-worm. Surely The Vampire Diaries’ fans have experienced a lot of that and the same is true with True Blood, which is also based on a series of books. As for same of the differences between The Vampire Diaries books and the series:

In the book Elena has blonde hair and blue eyes, has a sister named Margaret – no Jeremy, and the story is set in Fell’s Church instead of Mystic Falls. Aside from subtle differences, fans of the literary Vampire Dairies pretty much look at the series as an entirely different story in most regards. Fan of the TV series, of course, are oblivious. Judging by the success of the series so far, it really doesn’t seem to matter – seems like Vampire Diaries will be sticking around for a while.

Vampire Dairies returns September 9, on TheCW.

From everything I've heard, the tv show is superior to the books, so I don't know what to think of this.

I wonder how the hell they are going to retcon that- they are so totally different, not just the characters but the mythologies. I have read the books- both series- and while I love them, I don't want them messing with my show too much.If Jeremy fails to turn and dies in the premiere, and suddenly Elena has a little sister named Margaret, I'll be calling bullsh*t.

  3. Sawyer says:

Maybe Jeremy will turn into a female as well as a vampire.
