Tonight on The Vampire Diaries: Tensions Rise and an Olympic Gold Medalist Guest Stars

The Vampire Diaries returns tonight after last week’s Thanksgiving break and there will be fallout from the breakup that ended the last episode. This is Mystic Falls and so no one can mourn a broken heart for too long, as there’s always some kind of danger around the corner. The mysterious Professor Shane (David Alpay) is a potential threat and in not surprising news Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Stefan (Paul Wesley) have different ideas of how to neutralize this threat.

It is also the Miss Mystic Falls Pageant event happening tonight and a very special guest star will be appearing; Olympic gold medalist Gabrielle Douglas. We have behind-the-scenes photos that include some of the cast of The Vampire Diaries goofing around with Douglas and it’s hard to tell who is more star struck.

The end of “We All Go a Little Mad Sometimes” was divisive amongst certain parts of the TVD fandom; some were rejoicing, while others were unhappy to see the breakup of their favorite couple. What is clear is that the dynamic has shifted since Elena (Nina Dobrev) became a vampire and Elena’s growing reliance on Damon suggests that this breakup was inevitable. This doesn’t mean that Elena and Stefan are permanently done, but at this point in time the relationship isn’t working. It also propels the story forward as they’ve been dancing around the idea of a Damon and Elena pairing and for the show to remain fresh something has to change.

There is and will always be tension between Damon and Stefan, even when they are getting along there is a layer of snark and so this will just increase that tension. In the sneak peek below Stefan informs Damon of the Elena breakup news and to Damon’s credit he does his best to restrain himself from revelling in this. There is a giant elephant in the room that Stefan passive aggressively acknowledges (he’s hurting so he gets a free pass with being a bit of a jerk) and he dismisses Damon’s Professor Shane plan. Stefan not agreeing with a Damon plan is nothing new, but will his heartbreak mean that he will do something impulsive?

Caroline (Candice Accola) has a lot on her plate this week including being a good friend to both Elena and Stefan, dealing with her own romantic entanglements with Tyler (Michael Trevino) and the date she promised Klaus (Joseph Morgan) and organizing the Miss Mystic Falls Pageant. I think we might see the return of control freak Caroline. In terms of Elena’s love life Caroline is firmly in the Stefan camp and so her advice to her best friend might be clouded by these feelings. One of my favorite relationships on the show is the (platonic) friendship between Stefan and Caroline and so hopefully this will come into play tonight (seriously, I still think they need to write a secret vampire self-help book). Tyler reacted angrily to the news that Caroline agreed to a date with Klaus and so their fake fighting has transitioned into real disharmony. Klaus will be collecting on this date promise so expect even more tension at this event.

One person that Caroline will encounter at the Pageant is Olympic gold medalist Gabby Douglas. Douglas revealed during the Olympics that The Vampire Diaries is her favorite show and this guest appearance came as a result of this. As you can see from the behind-the-scenes photos above, the 16-year old gymnast sensation had an excellent time on set and so did the cast who shared scenes with Douglas.

Another major development from the last episode involves Jeremy (Steven McQueen) as they triggered his hunter mark; they needed him to kill a vampire so Elena would be free from her Connor (Todd Williams) mental torture. There are unpleasant side effects for Jeremy though as he is haunted by vivid nightmares and he turns to Matt (Zach Roerig) for help. Unfortunately for Jeremy the situation escalates quicker than expected, does Professor Shane hold the key to Jeremy’s predicament? Can he be trusted?
