This week's episode of The Vampire Diaries unexpectedly brought Elena a new ally in the race to destroy Klaus.  Originally, the newly resurrected Esther had told her son that she wanted their family to reunite.  She even threw a fancy ball for the citizens of Mystic Falls in order to introduce them to her family.  But it all turned out to be a ruse.  When Elena finally managed to speak to Esther in private, the Original Mother revealed that she had her own plans.  She acknowledged that her children were an abomination and since she was responsible for turning them into vampires, she had to destroy them.  She used some of Elena's blood to create a spell that would bind the Original siblings together, ensuring that all of them would die if one of them was killed (thus getting around the pesky problem of being unable to actually kill Klaus).

This week's episode of The Vampire Diaries also saw Damon confessing his love for Elena, but when she was floored by the confession and said "maybe that's a problem", he decided to find his pleasure elsewhere: notably in Rebekah.

In the February 16 episode, Elena will learn about Damon and Rebekah's recent night together and she'll be understandably upset.  But she'll also find herself in danger (as you can see from this promo) and arguing with her friends on how to handle the Originals and their internal power-play.
