The big wait is almost over; season 3 of The Vampire Diaries starts in a couple of days and to promote the new season further the CW has released another piece of very cool artwork. Continuing the theme of bloody fruit it sees Nina Dobrev (Elena/Katherine), Paul Wesley (Stefan), Ian Somerhalder (Damon) and new regular Joseph Morgan (Klaus) posing together in a highly stylised shot that can be seen below.
So what does this photo reveal?
Firstly it shows that Elena (or is it Katherine?) and Damon are definitely closer. Remember how these two started season 2? In a far less friendly place than this, that is for sure. It looks like the close bond that developed in the latter half of last year will become even closer as they place hand over hand. It is ominous that their spare hands hold a bloody knife and a bloody piece of fruit though; is this a sign that it won't end well for anyone that is involved?
The other pairing in this shot is just as interesting (if not more so) as Stefan's hands are drenched with blood and Klaus appears to be whispering in Stefan's ear as the devil on his shoulder. After two seasons of having just the three leads appearing in the primary promotional material it could have been jarring to have Morgan join the trio, but it has been quite the opposite. The inclusion of Klaus has definitely raised the stakes (no pun intended) and his introduction at the end of last season as such a deliciously evil villain has further propelled the story, especially for the usually 'good' and 'restrained' Stefan. The blood soaked hands evoke a feeling of Macbeth and I wonder if Stefan will have his own Lady Macbeth guilt filled "Out damned spot" moment later this year. How far will Ripper Stefan go with Klaus by his side?
This group shot is the perfect companion to the most recent trailer that can be seen here and certainly adds to the tension. It looks Elena's 18th birthday will be eventful and memorable but this doesn't mean that it will be a happy peril free occasion, far from it.
