Walking Dead - Thanatotic Theories: Can Shane Survive Season 2?

Walking DeadWarning:  The Walking Dead TV Series fans who have intentionally avoided the comics could potentially be spoiled by this article.  You have been warned.

One of the biggest differences between the comic series of The Walking Dead and the televised version is the survival of Shane, as well as the durability of his moral standing.  Until recently, any leanings of Jon Bernthal's Shane Walsh towards the darker nature of his ink-bound counterpart in the The Walking Dead comics have played out with a more interpretive range of dramatic contexts.  Sure his drunken 'attack' on Lori at the CDC was pretty despicable, but until he made poor Otis into Zombie bait I don't think any of his actions on the series thus far couldn't be chalked up to some sort of Zombie Apocalypse stress disorder.  Heck, even his crime of feeding Otis to the walkers has brought some pretty compelling defenses from the fan community, the most convincing of which being that had he not hobbled Otis neither one of them would have escaped and Carl would most likely have died during surgery.  Needs of the many?  You be the judge.

So while the debate rages on over whether Shane did the right thing or not, the graphic-novel enlightened Walking Dead fans are considering Shane's bad behavior from an entirely different angle: is Walking Dead the TV Series about to take a major story beat from its comic-kin, and should it?   One of the most satisfying aspects, and vexing depending on who you ask, of the show for Walking Dead comic fans is the fact that the series avoids allowing its source material serve as a sort of spoiler bible.  The dead walk, a group of survivors drift aimlessly through the remnants of America looking for a safe and secure home, and beyond that everything is up for grabs in terms of the Walking Dead canon.

If I were a betting man, I'd lay money on this:  Shane will survive for many seasons to come.  If nothing for the fact that 'gearing up' to his fate in the comics would be, at this point, very difficult to conceal.  With what Shane has done to earn our distrust, and may yet do, his eventual death at the hands of Carl Grimes, ala the Walking Dead comics, would be one of the worst kept secrets in the story so far.  On the other hand, sparing Shane from his hand-drawn fate in the comics and injecting him in an alternative dramatic context would be a pleasing departure.

Don't forget to tune to in for The Walking Dead "Chupacabra"  Sunday, November 13th, at 9/8c on AMC.

Shane is the true hero of the show!!! Rick is nice but to soft for that world. If they kill Shane then they killed the only true hero!!! Without Shane Lori and Carl would have been dead period!!!!! Dead not just once but many times!!! How can anyone call Shane bad names. Poor old Otis shot Carl first!!! Otis was to damn slow and tired. Otis was dead Already, he was about to take Shane and Carl with him!!!!! So how was Shane a bad guy for doing what had to be done? Shane fell inlove with Lori because he thought Rick was dead. Good ol Lori didn’t have to open her Levy’s so quickly!!! Shane is guilty of love period. If Carl kills him then to heck with that brat in that case!!! Lori loves to make Shane suffer. Without Shane most of the group if not all would be DEAD!!!! Lori and Carl would be dead FOR SURE!!!!! Rick is a GREAT man and a heart of gold. Yet Shane has a heart of Diomonds, and has risked his life over and over, Shane has made all the CORRECT decisions, all the hard choices that were RIGHT!!!!!! Shane and Daryle are the true hero’s of this movie in my book. Also Glenn is right there as a hero himself!!!!! What has Lori or Carl done besides get in the way and take advantage of Shanes good heart. I hope Andrea gets Shane, then watch Lori get JEALOUSE !!!!! I like the whole group, I just likes Shane and Daryle better. I believe Merle is still alive, and is following the group. I believe the walker attack in camp was Merles doing. Either he brought those walkers in a truck or just led them there, wait and see!!!!!! I also believe he did NOT lose his hand. I believe that was a walkers hand, the burnt skin, blood all that was from a walker thus FAKED. Notice how little blood was on the scene! Maybe he used his. Belt buckle or something to pick the lock on the cuffs. I bet he has 2 hands. I bet that was really him mocking his brother, then 2 walkers just appeared in the woods, hmmm fishy to me!! Maybe he brought them with him again!!! Herschel was controlling them and putting them in the barn so why couldn’t bad boy Merle do the same for revenge? Wait and see guys and gals. Bye for now. ME

Season 2 episode 11 involves the death of Dale, he discovers a torn up cow and is attacked by a walker ripping his guts out before Dale kills it, Daryl shows up and says 'Sorry Brother" and shoots him in the head.

Season 2 episode 12 Rick kills Shane by stabbing him in the chest after Shane tries to tell him that his family won't miss him after awhile. Shane then returns as a walker.

Season 2 episode 13 has the first appearance of Michonne and everyone leaves the farm for good.
