David Duchovny wants to do more TV, 'X-Files'

David Duchovny no longer wants to escape television, he says. The actor, who played Agent Fox Mulder on The X-Files, famously left the science fiction series after its seventh season due to his desperation to move on from television (he would later return in a guest capacity for the series, and appeared in 2008's film sequel, X-Files: I Want to Believe.

Duchovny, who recently returned to television with Showtime's racy series Californication, spoke in an interview with The Sunday Times in which he stated that as the landscape of television had changed from his days on the X-Files, he was less reluctant to embrace the medium. Referencing a previous interview with the publication, Duchovny shared how his opinions had changed.

"When I said to you back then that I had no desire to go back to television, I didn't see how TV was changing. Now, you can do a 12-episode series and it doesn't dominate your life. I actually think that doing a series like this is the most free form of filmed entertainment you can make. I just wasn't smart enough back when we were speaking to see that the TV landscape was changing."

The shorter seasons of Californication are a big contrast to Duchovny's previous series The X-Files, which had long, network-length seasons of more than twenty episodes.

Speaking of The X-Files, Duchovny said he wanted to step into the shoes of Fox Mulder at least one more time, despite the financial failure of I Want to Believe, the 2008 sequel to the series.

"It was a $25m picture and couldn't compete with the summer movies like The Dark Knight. It was a somber mood piece, and that might have been a mistake. I hope we get to do another. Gillian [Anderson] and I would both be interested in seeing where it goes."

Could we get to see Mulder and Scully reunite once again? Having just finished watching the first season of The X-Files for the first time, I have to say that I hope that they get another chance to work together, too. If not, I'll settle for Duchovny on Californication.
