Torchwood: Miracle Day premiered last night in the UK, but tonight the US is going to be getting the second episode of the ten episode season, "Rendition." We've got some promos and photos for you to check out.

So what exactly is happening with "Rendition?" Here's what Starz has to say about the episode: "As the Torchwood team is reunited, Jack realizes he's the most vulnerable man on Earth. A flight to the United States turns into a desperate battle for survival."

It's a widely known fact that Jack's the only mortal person on Earth during the events of Miracle Day, in contrast to his previous immortality. How do we find that out? Well, if you check out the promo photos below, it appears that his plane trip to the U.S. is ruined by a bit of poison, though Gwen has the antidote.

Tonight on Torchwood: "Rendition" (7/15)

It appears that my worries were unfounded; Torchwood: Miracle Day premiered Friday night on Starz to strong ratings.

The fourth season premiere of Torchwood, "The New Earth," garnered a respectable 1.5 million viewers on its first showing, according to Entertainment Weekly. The series picked up another half million viewers through the full weekend. That's on par with recent Starz newbie Camelot's premiere. If Torchwood can avoid the hemorrhaging of viewers that befell Camelot, I think it'd be safe to say that the series can be considered a success -- at least stateside.

How the show performs in the U.K. when it airs on BBC One on July 14 might be an entirely different matter. Will fans have resorted to piracy to dodge the six-day wait placed upon them by the BBC's contract with Starz? If so, viewership for Miracle Day could be way down from the average 6.5 million viewers who tuned in back in 2009 for Torchwood: Children of the Earth. If U.K. viewership experiences a big drop, that could be problematic for the potential future of Torchwood, regardless of good numbers in the U.S.

Torchwood: Miracle Day U.S. Premiere Ratings Strong

Tonight marks the premiere of Torchwood: Miracle Day on Starz. The first episode of the season, titled "The New World," will air on the BBC in the UK on July 14. But what's in store for U.S. audiences tonight?

According to the press release for the episode, the episode begins with the sudden cessation of death. "People keep aging -- they get hurt and sick, but they never die. The result: a population boom overnight. With all the extra people, resources are finite. It's said that in four months' time, the human race will cease to be viable."

Rex Matheson (Mekhi Phifer), an American CIA agent who miraculously survives a car crash that impales him, begins investigating who is behind this event -- and he keeps coming back to the secret British institute of Torchwood. His analyst, Esther Drummond (Alexa Havins), works to discover just what exactly Torchwood is.

Gwen Cooper (Eve Myles), the last surviving Torchwood member, remains in hiding. Oswald Danes (Bill Pullman), a convicted murderer, survives his own execution. And when Esther's search leads her to Captain Jack Harkness (John Barrowman), assassin's are suddenly "activated to kill them all..."

Tonight on Torchwood: "The New World" (7/8, Season Premiere)

We're growing ever closer to the premiere of the fourth season of Torchwood. Torchwood: Miracle Day, as its titled, premieres tomorrow night on Starz. Unfortunately for UK fans of the series, the series won't be premiering until July 14.

To tide both audiences over until the big premiere, though, Doctor Who TV has released twenty new spoilers for the first episode of the series, titled "The New World." The teasers show some indications of continuing previous storylines while creating new ones. Interestingly, it looks like there's going to be a mention of former Doctor Who companion Rose Tyler, who travelled in the TARDIS alongside Jack Harkness for a while. Apparently, though, Ianto Jones isn't mentioned in the first episode (though he will be mentioned later on, according to showrunner Russell T. Davies). We're only three days away from the July 8 U.S. premiere of Torchwood: Miracle Day. BBC One viewers, as unfair as it is, will have to wait until July 14 to see the first episode of the show's fourth season. To tide both audiences over, Digital Spy has released a set of ten spoilers regarding what happens in the series.

For those of you unfamiliar with the show's premise, Torchwood: Miracle Day will center upon an event in which everyone on earth is suddenly turned immortal. While this "miracle day" is initially a happy moment, things soon turn sour when the population spirals out of control. Torchwood is called in to help, including the suddenly-mortal Jack Harkness (John Barrowman).

Here are the ten spoilers from Digital Spy:

1. There's a cheeky reference to a deceased former Torchwood member (and no, it's not Ianto).

2. The chief villains from Torchwood: Children of Earth also get a mention, in a roundabout sort of way.

3. "The Founding Fathers had me in mind when they wrote the Constitution, don't you think?"

4. At one point, Rex makes a less than graceful escape.

5. "She should have run faster."

10 Torchwood: Miracle Day Teasers Released

The BBC has announced that it will premiere the new series of Torchwood, subtitled Miracle Day, on July 14. That's a full six days after the Doctor Who spinoff makes its American debut on July 8 on Starz. This is in heavy contrast, naturally, to the two week delay that occurred with Torchwood: Children of the Earth -- though, last time, the delay was from the UK to the US.

The show, which this year is a joint production between the BBC and Starz, will feature a plotline in which no one on earth is able to die. Naturally, disaster erupts, and it's up to Jack Harkness (John Barrowman) and the rest of the Torchwood crew to figure out just what's happening.

While I'm unsure just how many American Torchwood fans would be willing to splurge for Starz just for the one show, I still think that the delay is one that UK fans should accept. After all, Starz is paying for a good portion of the show's budget this season, meaning that we get to see cool things like a helicopter exploding.

The viewership for this show on both sides of the Atlantic should be interesting to watch. We'll keep you posted.

Torchwood: Miracle Day to Air in U.K. Six Days After U.S. Broadcast

It was looking to me that the new season of Torchwood wouldn't be premiering for another year -- but that is very far from the case. As a matter of fact, the fourth season of the Doctor Who spinoff will be taking a leaf from the Time Lord, and premiering the same day in both the US and the UK. What day is that? July 1, 2011. That's a Friday.

The newly titled Torchwood: Miracle Day will be premiering in the UK on BBC One, and in the US on Starz. The ten-part season will begin filming next week, according to Digital Spy.

Cast additions for the new series  include Mekhi Phifer, Alexa Havins, and Bill Pullman, and will be more US-oriented than previous seasons, due to the fact that Starz and BBC One are jointly producing the project.

The BBC One timeslot is set at 9pm, while no timeslot for Starz has been announced.

I'm quite interested to see how Torchwood fares with the split, but either way it goes, it seems likely now that Miracle Day will have the same high quality as the previous season, Children of the Earth. It has, after all, been confirmed by Davies to be equally -- if not more -- dark than its predecessor.

Torchwood Season 4 for July 1

Back in August, we told you that the fourth season of Torchwood would be titled The New World. Sorry, that isn't true. Russell T. Davies and the folks behind the BBC/Starz drama have changed the title from The New World to Miracle Day. If it doesn't sound as epic, that's because it isn't -- but it fits the plot a whole lot more. After all, it was revealed today what exactly what the plot was about: immortality. According to TVLine:

The new season of Torchwood asks the provocative (and arguably horrifying) question, “What would happen if the entire human race became immortal?”

“Not a single person on Earth dies” confirms Davies of the premise for the fourth season, which will bear the title Torchwood: Miracle Day. “The old stay old. It’s great news for some people, but globally it’s an instant population boom. Earth relies on people dying. Suddenly you’re affecting everyone on the planet. That’s where the Torchwood team comes in.”

This seems to build on the more global scope of the third series, Children of the Earth. And, just when you thought the show hadn't Americanized enough by being shared with Starz, you can rest easy: Bill Pullman is playing the big bad guy. Pullman, who will also be launching the final season of his HBO drama Big Love later this month, has an as-yet unknown role. My money's on him being an alien.

Think the premise sounds dark enough? TVLine does.

Oh, and one last thing: Said premise is going to make Torchwood: Children of the Earth look like mere child’s play. You thought that conceit was dark? Just wait.

Torchwood Season 4 Renamed, Given Plot

Children of Earth was the banner title for the third season of Torchwood, a five-part miniseries event that was lauded by both fans and critics. Now, after Torchwood's move to Starz, it seems as though it's getting another such title -- something that the first two seasons of the show didn't have.

As a whole, the season will be titled "The New World," according to The Hollywood Reporter. While this obviously refers to the new audience and new setting of the series, it could very well also describe a more literal "new world," as in a planet.

The new story will follow a CIA agent (Rex) and analyst (Ester) who tackle an alien-related global issue. Torchwood, having been destroyed and disbanded, is "like a legend now ... it's like something that's ceased to exist and is now spoken of only in whispers." Soon, Rex and Ester are on the run and are seeking out the help of Captain Jack and Gwen.

That synopsis sort of leaves room for both explanations, though it's interesting to see the two new main characters being American. "The two teams coming together is a big part of the story -- are they friends or enemies? There's a lot of sparks and excitement," shared creator and showrunner Russell T. Davies.

"We definitely have a really big story to tell," said executive producer Julie Gardner. "It's absolutely rebooted to welcome in a new audience."

The series will be akin to Children of Earth in that it will tell one big story, only this time with double the number of episodes. The ten episode season will also, according to the article, have more room for sex and violence now that it's on a pay-cable network.

"I've always had loose standards and practices," Davies said. "If the story demands intimacy or savagery, we will go there absolutely ... [but] there's nothing better than a great big global thriller that stops for a sex scene -- it's probably hard to make that happen in a thriller."

Torchwood: The New World is slated to premiere on Starz and BBC One next year.

Torchwood: After 'Children of Earth' Comes 'The New World'

Starz is really finding its legs as a channel. It's been slowly building up original content for a while now, though shows like Crash and Party Down have gone largely unnoticed by the TV-viewing crowd. Now that the network is hosting bigger fare like the miniseries Pillars of the Earth, it's finally getting a bit more attention -- and might just get a few more subscribers as well.

Here's one reason I might be subscribing to Starz: Torchwood. The Doctor Who spinoff is being co-produced by the network, who will also be airing the series in the US, instead of BBC America, which aired the first three seasons of the show. Unlike Doctor Who, Russell T Davies is still in charge of Torchwood, which has become his main show since his move to Los Angeles earlier this year.

Like Children of the Earth, the subtitle of Torchwood's third season (a miniseries event), the fourth season will be "very dark," Davies told SFX. "It's too soon to give away the story, but I've always had this story in mind, and the whole existence of season four will make sense once you know what that story is."

Children of the Earth, which featured some major deaths, might have been a turning point in the series, but Davies assures viewers that it's still essentially "the same people in the same world, following on... It's still Gwen, it's still Jack, and hopefully more. You’ll feel very comfortable with it. And there’s great new American characters coming into it."

That's one aspect of the series that will be much different from previous years -- it's expanding culturally. Though main character Jack Harkness (John Barrowman) is an American (a strange thing for British television), the cast remained predominantly British. With the show's expanded horizon and producers, the change seems necessary. What still remains unknown is whether or not the new series will feature Russell Tovey (Being Human) as Alonso Frame. The character, who appeared in the Doctor Who Christmas special "Voyage of the Damned," reappeared in the Who episode "The End of Time," where the Doctor introduced him to Jack as a potential romantic interest (for those who don't know, Jack is bisexual). This seems like a set-up to bring Tovey into Torchwood, and I hope it follows through.

Torchwood will premiere on BBC One and Starz in Summer 2011.

Torchwood Season 4 "Very Dark," Says Davies

This isn't a piece of news, per se, but it is a fun pic of three showrunners having fun with an evil alien.

Bryan Fuller, known for his work on the shows Pushing Daisies, Dead Like Me (both of which he created), and Heroes, was photographed in Los Angeles with Russell T Davies, Julie Gardner, and a Dalek.

If you're unfamiliar with the last three names, you obviously don't watch Doctor Who. Davies and Gardner were responsible for the relaunch of the series in 2005, and both were attached to the series until last year, when both decided to move on to other things, leaving an entirely new production crew in charge of the show (a good move, in my opinion). Gardner and Davies then moved to Los Angeles to work at BBC Worldwide America, a branch of the UK television network in the U.S. There, Davies and Gardner orchestrated the Torchwood partnership between Starz and the UK, where the Doctor Who spinoff will be co-produced by both channels and take on a different setting.

So what was Fuller doing with Davies and Gardner? I'd absolutely love it if they were working on something together, but chances are, they were just hanging out. Fuller's Twitter caption of the photo, "Battling Daleks with Russell T Davies and Julie Gardner," certainly lends credence to the latter option. However, I'm still holding out hope that maybe the former is true. Having Fuller write for Torchwood would be all kinds of awesome.

Talk of an American spin on Torchwood had fans a little concerned from the moment the rumor hit the streets.  Torchwood fans are, after-all, closely related to Doctor Who and you do not mess with their mythology.  The good news is, the 10 episode run of Torchwood being co-produced by Starz will not only pick up in the wake of the devastating events of Torchwood: Children of Earth, the limited run season will be helmed by Doctor Who and Torchwood producer Russell T Davie, guaranteeing the bonafides of this Torchwood.

The good news for American fans is that this series will air on Starz, although the scheduling has not been confirmed yet.  BBC will again carry Torchwood in the UK, it stands to reason that the co-producers BBC and Starz will opt for something as close to simulcasting as they can pull off.  Certainly this is not the first time BBC has co-produced with an American counterpart, but it appears there is no precedent where scheduling is concerned.

One clue that Torchwood might appear on US screens sooner rather than later can be found in the release from the BBC themselves.  The network is indicating that this run of Torchwood is being written as a more global storyline, possibly a move to make the series more accessible for US viewers who have yet to connect with the Torchwood mythology. John Barrowman (Capt. Jack), and Eve Myles (Gwen) are returning along with "new faces."  Of the direction of the story, the BBC had this to say in a press release "Torchwood will burst back onto the screen with a shocking and moving story with global stakes and locations that will make it feel bigger and bolder than ever."

More statements from the release indicated a slight tweaking of the Torchwood formula in an attempt to broaden the appeal. "Torchwood has attracted remarkable attention and loyalty in both the UK and U.S., and in this new partnership with Starz, the next chapter will not only reward our current fans, but also introduce new viewers to the most impressive installment yet."

Americanized "Torchwood" Not So American After-All

I don't know how I feel about this, I honestly don't know. When I found out that FOX was developing a stateside version of the British sci-fi series Torchwood, I felt the excitement that the US would be getting to see Torchwood on a more viewed network -- save for the fact that it wouldn't be the same Torchwood that sci-fi fans have come to know and love.

The British Torchwood is a spinoff of the hit series Doctor Who. Featuring the Doctor's former companion Jack Harkness as the protagonist, Torchwood (the title of which is an anagram of Doctor Who) has been described as "24 with aliens." Though Harkness is American, Torchwood is deeply intertwined with the mythology of Who, a distinctly British show? Will it be able to work on American screens?

Possibly, and possibly not. Though not even approved for a pilot, the series is being scripted by former Who scribe Russell T. Davies, who ended his tenure on who with the departure of David Tennant from the role of the Doctor (Davies isn't the only one moving to American television; Tennant will star in the new NBC series Rex Is Not Your Lawyer).

Will Torchwood U.S. survive the harsh stateside ratings game? It might. While the 24-like element will likely attract some viewers (especially with it rumored to be 24's last season), the sci-fi plot might just scare them off. My prediction: it'll either be a huge failure, or it'll be a huge hit (think V).

If it is a huge hit, however, there may be something that fans of the British Doctor Who may have to take issue with: the inevitable Who remake. "Tranter might try to reboot Doctor Who for U.S. audiences," The Hollywood Reporter says.

Let's hope not. Remaking Britain's beloved Doctor would provide considerable backlash."The horror!" proclaimed one fan of the series. I agree. I very much agree.

'Torchwood' To Get U.S. Version on FOX?
