'Torchwood' To Get U.S. Version on FOX?

I don't know how I feel about this, I honestly don't know. When I found out that FOX was developing a stateside version of the British sci-fi series Torchwood, I felt the excitement that the US would be getting to see Torchwood on a more viewed network -- save for the fact that it wouldn't be the same Torchwood that sci-fi fans have come to know and love.

The British Torchwood is a spinoff of the hit series Doctor Who. Featuring the Doctor's former companion Jack Harkness as the protagonist, Torchwood (the title of which is an anagram of Doctor Who) has been described as "24 with aliens." Though Harkness is American, Torchwood is deeply intertwined with the mythology of Who, a distinctly British show? Will it be able to work on American screens?

Possibly, and possibly not. Though not even approved for a pilot, the series is being scripted by former Who scribe Russell T. Davies, who ended his tenure on who with the departure of David Tennant from the role of the Doctor (Davies isn't the only one moving to American television; Tennant will star in the new NBC series Rex Is Not Your Lawyer).

Will Torchwood U.S. survive the harsh stateside ratings game? It might. While the 24-like element will likely attract some viewers (especially with it rumored to be 24's last season), the sci-fi plot might just scare them off. My prediction: it'll either be a huge failure, or it'll be a huge hit (think V).

If it is a huge hit, however, there may be something that fans of the British Doctor Who may have to take issue with: the inevitable Who remake. "Tranter might try to reboot Doctor Who for U.S. audiences," The Hollywood Reporter says.

Let's hope not. Remaking Britain's beloved Doctor would provide considerable backlash."The horror!" proclaimed one fan of the series. I agree. I very much agree.

I was hoping to see the BBC Torchwood on Fox. Not a Torchwood America. :( I love Dr Who and Torchwood. But without Captain Jack, I don't see how it will work….

The ONLY way I would accept this is if there is an American branch of the existing Torchwood in Cardiff. The ONLY way I would accept this!!!!

Please, NO!!!! Don't take great British shows and redo them. Very few make it through the 1st season.Don't we have the "smarts" to try something different. Just think of NCIS, the West Wing, House, Numb3rs. Good drama shoud not be a remake of the BBC. If you want British shows, then show them don't try to copy.

I gotta agree with jerry, the beauty of Torchwood is Captain Jack Harkness, I can't see anyone but John Barrowman pulling off that role. I'm an American who very much loves the whole Doctor Who/ Torchwood universe and I kind of cringe at the thought of them touching Torchwood or Doctor Who, why fix it if it ain't broken :) I think the answer would be to create a spin off, essentially a completely new team lead by Eve Myles aka Gwen Cooper, but either way I'll def check out the show if it airs

I really don't see this working… First of all, I thought Captain Jack wasn't coming back. I guess there will a magically appearing rift that just happens to be the fault line. I hope they looked at what america tried adapt the UK version of Life On Mars, which was a complete disaster! Told my roommate about bescause we both love doctor who and torchwood. She said she wasn't going to watch and to tell you the thruth I mostly likely won't until I get more infomation about it.And otther thing, please RTD, don't make like 24

I don't see this working. It's not a criticism for either side, but "Torchwood" (and "Doctor Who") *aren't* typical American shows. It's one of the reasons it makes them work. Rewriting them with American characters would take away one of the primary strengths of the show.

No. While Torchwood U.S. may "work," I would not have the slightest bit of interest in anything but the original British Who-connected version.

Hmmmm, Torchwood in the US. I could see it being set in the Pacific NorthWest. The Rift ended up there when the Hub exploded, it triggered something in the Rift and it wobbled, closing down the entrance in Cardiff and opening one in the US. Would have to be an International collaboration (so we can have Jack and Gwen), and that would leave it open for actors/actresses from other countries as well. Unfortunately I don't see Fox letting it play out like the BBC, which will suck. I would rather it show on a cable channel where it would have more freedom.

I think they should find a way to resurect Ianto – his body was frozen by UNIT and the somehow bring him back. Realizing that Jack is never going to love him like he needs (he couldn’t say I love you even as Ianto was dying), he takes an offer to head up a US branch of Torchwood. Russell T Davies always said he knew where series 4 should go, so he can do that on BBC. Ianto lives and is the main character in the US version making many many fans happy (and bringing in a nice base audience of both US and overseas viewers). Imagine… two Torchwoods! (with the occasional crossover). Also, I like the idea of Ianto going from TeaBoy to boss. :)
