It didn't even take two days for HBO to decide that it wanted to keep Treme. The network has just renewed the freshman series (which stars John Goodman, Steve Zahn, and Wendell Pierce, among others) for a second season, only two days after the series premiered with the episode "Do You Know What It Means." That's probably setting some sort of land-speed record for the network, but they're not even looking back. And who can blame them? Treme is a great show that has the potential to get even greater, and it definitely isn't out of place among some of HBO's finer dramas, like The Wire (which, like Treme, was created by David Simon) or The Sopranos.
“I can’t think of another show that is more emblematic of what we aspire to be as a network than ‘Treme.’ In the tradition of ‘The Wire,’ David Simon and Eric Overmeyer have embarked on an exploration of the soul of one of the world’s most unique cities through the lives of an exquisitely crafted cast of characters," HBO programming head Michael Lombardo said in a statement.
It's no surprise that Treme was renewed, and when you think about it, it's no surprise that it happened so quickly either. HBO is very focused on what it wants as a network - after all, its hit True Blood has already been renewed for a fourth season beyond the third, which premieres June 20.
Treme is expected to finish out its first season of ten episodes on June 13, paving room in the HBO Sunday night block for True Blood's return on June 20. The show's second season will begin filming in New Orleans sometime this fall, with a premiere date expected in April 2011. Treme's second episode, "Meet De Boys on the Battlefront," will air Sunday.
