The season 4 premiere of True Blood moved the timeline forward about 18 months while Sookie was off with the faeries. When she returned to Bon Temps, she found a slightly different town. Sookie's house had been sold (to Eric), Bill was now the Vampire King, Jason was a deputy but still involved with the werepanthers (who had kidnapped him in the premiere), Andy was addicted to V, Jesus was trying to convince Lafayette to get involved in a coven, Tara had moved out of town and was involved with another woman, and Sam was still trying to make amends for shooting his brother (who wasn't killed but now had a messed up leg).
Tonight's new episode of True Blood moves the storylines even further. There are a few mild spoilers for tonight's episode ahead.
Sookie and Bill: After learning that Eric is now her landlord (and refusing his advances yet again), Sookie goes to Bill to ask for help in getting her house back. Of course, she gets a shock when she learns that Bill is now the King, which gives the audience a nice piece of Bill's backstory (you'll get to see him as rocker Bill in 1982 London), as well as shows us the end of his fight with the former Queen. Want to know what happened to Sophie Anne? You'll get your answers tonight.
Hoyt and Jessica: The two of them - along with Pam - clash with the anti-vampire protestors outside of Fangtasia. Jessica also gets a bit of advice from Pam and then decides to let her hair down (literally) and let loose. But how will her giving into temptation affect her relationship with Hoyt?
Sam and the Shapeshifters: Sam continues to bond with his shapeshifting friends, but one of them in particular - Luna - catches his eye and the two grow closer. But it turns out that Luna has some very special abilities.
Jason and the Werepanthers: Jason comes face to face with Crystal in tonight's episode of True Blood, and she reveals the werepanthers' plans for him. By the end of the episode, you'll be wondering about Jason's fate.
Tara: Sookie's best friend returns to Bon Temps and immediately becomes embroiled in all that supernatural business again.
Lafayette and Jesus: More of the same here, with Jesus still trying to convince Lafayette that the coven is legitimate after their last meeting and telling him he should tap into his powers. Which actually leads to....
Eric and the Witches: Eric gets a face-to-face meeting with Marnie and her coven tonight after Bill orders him to put the kibosh on this witch business in Bon Temps. But Marnie reveals a depth of power and Eric suffers some disastrous consequences as a result. If you've read the books, you'll know what happens next. If you don't, you're in for a new version of Eric.
