Charlaine Harris is the woman responsible for True Blood, though her title for it is the Southern Vampire Mysteries. Harris, who published the first book, Dead Until Dark, in 2001, has since brought the series up to a whopping total of eleven books at a rate of one book a year. Now, however, she says she plans to end the series after book 13.
True Blood can't really hope to adapt all of Harris's books, though it's made a good go of it (it's a few episodes into its loose adaptation of book 4, Dead to the World). In any case, Harris intends to end the series to move on to something new in two years, she tells NBC New York's PopCornBiz.
"On the page, I have two more books," she says. "I'm writing Book 12 and then there will be Book 13. And then I'll think of something else new and wonderful to do."
And there won't be any loose strings left after she's done, Harris warns: "I think it'll be total closure. . . I don't go back to things once I've finished them. That's kind of what I do. I don't want to write Sookie after I get stale."
"I'll miss them," she admits. "But I think writers like to do different things. At least this writer does."
What's next for Harris? “I'm going to be working on a graphic novel next,” she reveals. “I’m very excited about that. It’s called Cemetery Girl with Christopher Golden, and it's a very exciting opportunity.”
Harris isn't the only one jumping the Sookie ship. True Blood's executive producer Alan Ball recently revealed he might leave the show after the next season of the show.
True Blood's next episode, "I'm Alive and on Fire," will air Sunday, July 17 on HBO.
OOOOOOhhhhhhh no i dont think I could handle Charlaine harris ending after book 13 of Sookie stackhouse series….. Im so addicted to sookie and Charlaine Harris is the best Author by far that has ever writen books that i can actually read 5 times over or more… Ive listened to her books on my audio books at least 5 to 6 times and the books too… Im a huge supporter of true bloods sookie stackhouse and charlaine harris… Its going to be sad to not have southern vampire mysteries to listen or read any more… I especially love the narrator Johanna Parker she is great at narrating, well im just happy i got the chance to love and enjoy the Sookie stackhouse series, thank you Charlaine Harris for writing perhaps the best series ive ever read, and for the True blood shows too, I absolutely love them.
