The first month of 2014 is packed with new AND old shows genuinely worth watching. So how do we sort our which shows to tune into and which ones to DVR or not even watch at all? It’s a tough task, but for today we will focus on one show we know is worth watching: HBO’s ‘True Detective‘.

For those of you who are unaware, the crime drama features Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey as a pair of detectives hunting a serial killer in the deep south. The news around the show, including trailers and promotional websites, reveal that it is going to be an awfully dark series. Perfect for the long winter nights, right?

From what we gather the show isn’t a thrill-a-minute type view, it’s a slow burn that genuinely explodes from at times with truly horrifying moments. Reviews are in about the acting as well and they’re very positive. Harrelson and McConaughey are great as two distinctly different, damaged men. Michelle Monaghan, who slides in as the deep south wife/girlfriend role, also won rave reviews for her performance.

If you’re an HBO series fan and you’re waiting for season 4 of ‘Game of Thrones’ this could be just what the doctor ordered. After a relatively lackluster season of ‘Boardwalk Empire’, I expect Sunday night’s in January/February to be full of suspense and the type of terror that may leave you sleeping with the lights on.
