I’ve seen this story passed around quite a lot over the past day, and I suppose it’s at least worth a bit of discussion, even if it turns out to be untrue. According to Hollywood Life (groan) Brad Pitt is in contention to be one of the main pair of detectives next season on HBO’s True Detective. According to them:
“Brad’s name has come up many times, it’s just a matter of what his other commitments are. Brad has tight relations with HBO — he teamed up with Ryan Murphy last year to produce the HBO movie The Normal Heart. I know everyone would be thrilled to have him on board.”
This is pretty much a “someone somewhere said he might someday be considering something relating to HBO,” and suddenly it’s all “Brad Pitt is replacing Matthew McConaughey!” For those who don’t know, True Detective is an anthology meaning the entire cast is getting replaced next season. It’s not out of the realm of possibility for a super A-list star like Pitt to join the show (McConaughey won a freaking Oscar this year, after all, as did Pitt for producing 12 Years a Slave), but it does run contrary to the other rumors that the leads this time around may be female.
I have a hunch this won’t come to pass, but anything is possible on HBO these days, it seems.
