ABC Announces Renewals Ahead of Upfronts - Ugly Betty and Private Practice saved!

At next month's upfronts, ABC will be announcing their fall schedule with an emphasis on new offerings such as Flash Forward, and V.  Surprisingly, the alphabet network decided to unleash a little Flash Forward of their own by announcing some renewals early - including a few shows considered to be 'on the bubble.'

ugly-bettyABC has announced early pick-ups for the 09-10 season of "America's Funniest Home Videos," "The Bachelor," "Brothers & Sisters," "Dancing with the Stars," "Desperate Housewives," "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition," "Grey's Anatomy," "Lost," "Private Practice," "Supernanny," "Ugly Betty" and "Wife Swap."

Season to date, ABC claims 4 of the Top 10 highest-rated TV series in Adults 18-49, including the Top 2 scripted shows with "Desperate Housewives" and "Grey's Anatomy." During the fall, the Net finished No. 1 in the November Sweep among Adults 18-49 for the fourth year in a row. Most recently ABC is generating mid-season momentum in 2009, delivering across-the-board gains over the same point last year: Total Viewers +6%, Adults 18-34 +14%, Adults 18-49 +8% and Adults 25-54 +6%.

While some of these titles were no-brainers (Desparate Housewives, Grey's Anatomy, and LOST), the renewal of Private Practice and Ugly Betty may be a surprise for some of you - although Ugly Betty's renewal prospects were foreshadowed by ABC head Stephen Mcpherson.
