The Big Bang Theory is without a doubt my favourite sitcom - it's the show that said it was okay to come out of the closet and be a geek. I personally don’t feel it has received the recognition it deserves. Sure, a TCA award or two is an excellent achievement, but where was the Emmy nomination for Outstanding Comedy Series? Jim Parsons at last received a nomination for his consistently-outstanding performance as the neurotic Sheldon Cooper, but other than that – very little. (I feel a case could be made for each of the main cast to receive nominations, particularly Simon Helberg’s Howard and Kunal Nayyar’s Raj, but I digress.) I love the super-smart repartee between Leonard and Sheldon, Leonard and Penny’s cute flirtation, Howard’s shameless and cringe-inducing pursuit of the ladies, and Raj’s quick-witted comebacks. The writing is razor-sharp and immensely clever, and it does what the best comedies should do – deliver laugh-out-loud moments consistently for twenty minutes.
All of these reasons are why I am very excited about the upcoming season 3 premiere entitled ‘The Electric Can-Opener Fluctuation’, due to air on Monday September 21st. When we left Sheldon, Leonard et al, the guys had just departed for the North Pole to conduct an experiment to try and validate string theory, while Penny was left back in LA having potentially realised true feelings for Leonard at long last. As if this couldn’t get any better, this ep will features guest appearances by Laurie Metcalfe as Sheldon’s hilariously religious mother, and John Ross Bowie as Barry Kripke, who you may remember as “the guy with the ridiculous speech impediment”. Last season of The Big Bang Theory saw viewing figures continue to rise. I urge you to watch it at its new time of 9.30/8.30c, as this show deserves all the plaudits it gets. Having been renewed for two seasons by CBS last year, it seems that we won’t be seeing the end for these particular geeks for quite a while yet.
