It was only a matter of time before social media and reality TV were meshed together. In somewhat of a shock, Twitter is going to be the pioneer in that field. According to The Huffington Post, Lionsgate has purchased the rights to turn Twitter co-founder Nick Bilton’s book “Hatching Twitter: A True Story of Money, Power, Friendship and Betrayal” into a TV series. Allison Sheamur from ‘The Hunger Games’ will latch on to the project as the executive producer while Bilton will write the script and produce.
Bilton’s book was published in November and made several “best of year” lists including The Economist, Gizmodo, and Mashable. Not exactly the New York Times, but still impressive for the behind-the-scenes account. Sheamur was quick to point out that “Hatching Twitter” won’t be like the film “Social Network”:
“‘Hatching Twitter’ will go behind the scenes of a groundbreaking Silicon Valley company in a way that’s never been captured before on television,” Shearmur noted. “‘The Social Network’ was a perfect film, and this series will be different, providing a longer view of the work life changes, gamesmanship and personal sacrifices made by a group of individuals who are building a company that will change the way that people communicate.”
The way people crave social media these days you’d think a show connecting one of the various outlets and TV would be a no-brainer, but I’m finding it hard to believe this show is going to have a lot of “followers” (Get it?). With that said, it’s tough to deny a curiosity about the birth of Twitter and what went on behind the scenes. I mean “money, power, friendship and betrayal”, who can turn that down?
