Today, Bravo announced an inovative and original piece of programming for their network, a new spin-off series The Real Housewives of D.C. (insert sarcasm here). I'm actually not kidding at all, as the network seems to think that The Real Housewives of Orange County, The Real Housewives of New York, The Real Housewives of Atlanta, and The Real Housewives of New Jersey just isn't enough "Real Housewives" on their channel. I hate to be a hater, I really do. But can Bravo seriously not come up with anything better than yet another spinoff for this sad reality show?
In a press release today Executive Vice President and General Manager of Bravo Media, Frances Berwick, had this to say of the new series:
"We're tapping personalities who are among Washington D.C.'s influential players, cultural connoisseurs, fashion sophisticates and philanthropic leaders - the people who rub elbows with the most prominent people in the country and easily move in the city's diverse political and social circles. A place for power and politics, Bravo is scouting the D.C. area to identify the city's alluring and discriminating residents, those women who have their pulse on the most important cultural events, political galas, gallery openings and fundraisers in Washington society. These leading members of D.C. society are in the know and comfortable discussing everything from the economy to high fashion. They are the talk of the town in the most powerful city in the world."
Okay, wait, now I'm confused. Is this going to be like the other Real Housewives shows or not? Because Mr. Berwick makes it sound as if this cast is going to be a very intriguing and intellectual group of people insighting change in the world. I thought the Real Housewives series were supposed to be about spiteful, self-centered, and vain women who really should have it all but somehow always need more. So is The Real Housewives of D.C. really going to be different, or is this just Bravo's spin on the new series?
Ultimately we'll just have to wait and see, but I see nothing to say otherwise at this point. Bravo has proven with each successive spinoff of this terrible reality series that they have little to no creativity left, and that they are happy to run whatever mild success they can manage into the ground. Count me out. I'd rather watch the totally fabricated and fictional Desperate Housewives before I watched this show. No date for the new show has been announced.
